We had an absolutely wonderful week based at The Gatehouse and found the location ideal for the places we wanted to visit. There are quite a few pubs within walking distance but only one served food (I think it's called the Blue Stoop) service there was very good but their menus was mostly burger type and spicey. If you want excellent service and a great meal pop up the road to Coffee Central, only a few minutes walk and you won't be disappointed with a brunch there, but leave plenty of time as the service isn't fast, but who wants a hastily prepared meal when you can have an awesome one prepared a slower pace.We managed a day in Sheffield and managed to see the Steel Museum, demonstrations of the largest engine in the UK are at 2pm and we'll worth seeing, as is the whole museum. We also went to the Plague Museum. Best coffee shop there is a wee walk down the hill, past the courtyard shops, stay on the same side as the courtyard and in a few minutes you will see it on the left (I think it's called The Old Tearoom), again, great service and delicious cakes. We also visited the Heights of Abraham, awesome views, awesome day, and Holbrook Hall is an absolute must for for a great history of what one woman achieved in an age where women had little respect. Our last trip out was to The Workhouse, what an eye opener that was, though this was about an hour's drive from the Gatehouse as it's near the top of Nottingham, but definitely worth the visit. So, back to The Gatehouse, it was well furnished and the lounge had more than enough comfortable sofas for everyone, an abundance of coffee tables and a good selection of DVDs (needed as we didn't manage to get a good reception on any tv station). Internet connection was great so that was a bonus. Beds were comfortable, we only wish more places had king or superking beds as hubby is over 6ft, but that is personal choice, the beds were comfortable non the less.Only downers for us was the slight musty smell, but that went shortly after we entered each time, no pole to open the velux windows so we had to stand on chairs which was not ideal and they could do with a few more pint glasses (hmmm, that could be but picking couldn't it) Oh, and fix the lock on the door for the loo. The wardrobe doors in the upstairs bedroom also need looking at.If you booked you could eat at the hotel that the property belongs to, unfortunately we can't comment on food there as we were out and about and didn't try any of their meals, though we spoke to the staff who were very polite and helpful with a query we had.I think in the whole we would definitely recommend this property for comfort, location and price.
