About this property

Brook cottage in Baslow next to Chatsworth Park

Traditional cottage in the popular village of Baslow with bathroom and downstairs wc

Great local amenities within walking distance

Situated in a quiet cul-de-sac leading to the river

Ideally situated for walks along the Derwent river, into Chatsworth estate or up onto the moors

Living area with dining table and a separate cosy sitting room

A delightful cottage located by the river in the sought after village of Baslow, adjacent to the pedestrian entrance to Chatsworth Park.
This refurbished 18th century cottage has original features over 3 floors. It is ideally positioned in this popular village close to excellent local amenities which include 2 village shops and a choice of restaurants, cafes and gastropubs. There is also a fine dining restaurant at Baslow Hall.
A short stroll over the river is the entrance to Chatsworth Park and all its attractions. Bakewell and Haddon Hall are within less than 7 miles. The market town of Chesterfield, with its crooked spire and Hardwick Hall are about 20-30 minutes drive, as are Edale and the Hope valley.
This is a prime walking area with so many walks from the front door. Go up onto the edges ( stunning views over the Hope valley) or walk along the river Derwent as far as Derby- if you have the energy.

The cottage was renovated over winter 2018 and the living accommodation enhanced, in line with recommendations from guest reviews to the previous owners. A downstairs toilet and dishwasher were also added. However, the property has steep and narrow stairs so is unsuitable for disabled visitors. It has since been redecorated as needed to maintain an extremely high standard of accommodation, including a recent bathroom renovation.

You enter the cottage into a generous living/dining room, with access to a kitchen and utility room at the rear, off which is a downstairs wc. The living room has a wood burning stove in the original fireplace and a music centre. From the kitchen, the back door leads to a paved courtyard with table, chairs and a BBQ. The kitchen is equipped with oven, hob, fridge with icebox, dishwasher, microwave and washer.
On the first floor is a cosy sitting room with a smart TV, DVD player and spacious bathroom with a separate shower, bath, wc and hand basin.
Stairs lead up to the second floor bedrooms. The rear bedroom has a king size zip and link bed which can be split into 2 singles. The front room has a double bed and fitted cupboards, with views from the velux window towards the park.

There is wireless internet throughout the property.

A first come first served parking space is available over the bridge for residents or there is ample parking in the village car park 100m away. We do ask that guests respect the parking restrictions outside the property, except for loading and unloading, for the sake of our neighbours. High chair and cot are available. Bedding and towels are provided.

A maximum of 2 dogs are welcome at a charge of £20 per dog but should not go on soft furnishings or in the bedrooms.

A most frustrating beginning for much anticipated visits to Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall.
We chose to stay at Baslow, near Bakewell because it appeared convenient to walk to Chatsworth House and to reach Haddon Hall by bus. We found out only a few days before we would arrive that Haddon Hall closed for the season at 4:00pm on the last day of September. With luck we could get there for a couple of hours that afternoon. We were unlucky because of bus connections at Chesterfield and continuous heavy rain. What really frustrated us, however, were the instructions for getting access to the cottage to leave our luggage. We followed the complicated directions to the back door, dragging our luggage in the rain. We found and opened the key safe. We tried the key in every possible way, but it would not work. The next bus to Bakewell came and went. Then, most frustratingly, we read on the tag that it was the key to the front door. No mention of that in the instructions. Once inside through the front door, cold, wet, and dispirited we decided to make a pot of tea. The promisingly commodious tea caddy had just three teabags. Other issues in the kitchen would be frustrating for anyone looking forward to some creative holiday self-catering. As the frustrations of our arrival retreated, it was clear that the cottage was as described: quaint, cosy and quiet. The bathroom was large and the laundry facilities were much appreciated. Everything was clean and fresh and the furnishings were of good quality. There are several good places to eat in the village. For our special meal out, we chose the closest, the Devonshire Arms which is just a minute away. The atmosphere was welcoming, the service professional and the food above average. The main dining room is circular in plan with curious acoustics. I hope that other diners could not hear our conversation as well as we heard theirs. The village of Baslow is charming. An excellent sign in the village green offers a wide range of interesting walks, some going deep into the elevated countryside. Traditional pedestrian-scale signs—not the responsibility of the cottage's owner but in their interest—to show the way to Chatsworth would have saved us a lot of confusion as innocent international tourists on Friday morning. On Saturday morning, however, it was fascinating to watch a cavalcade of walkers and their dogs pass by the cottage all heading for the grounds at Chatsworth. The nearby village of Edensor is worth visiting as part of the wider Chatsworth Estate.

Ideal for an alternative Christmas break
The cottage is just as described but its listing can’t truly show how cosy and convenient it is. Just steps from the easy walk to Chatsworth and with numerous car free walks starting from the village it was perfect for our short break. Highly recommended!

We live in the village and love it so much here we purchased this additional property on retirement to let out to visitors. We love walking and can often be found with our Labrador Inka either up on the moors or in Chatsworth Park. With a wealth of knowledge about local facilities we can always help you locate what you need.

Why they chose this property

This property has so many charming features, yet we’ve modernised it sympathetically so it should feel home from home. Although only round the corner from one of the two village pubs it is away from their entrance and car park so you are not disturbed.

What makes this property unique

The location is so picturesque and yet so convenient for ambling along to any Chatsworth event, or just around the park. There’s also a rear yard with table, chairs and BBQ for those lazy summer evenings, with a family living/ eating area internally as well as a sitting room.
