About this property
The Main House - from 8 to 10 people Casale Monticchio, a 17th century farmhouse
Locally known as Monticchio Vecchio,The Main House is the oldest building on the property and was lived in by the Calzoni family. Due to its large scale we allow it to be used by guests and friends for special occasions. The large living room opens onto its own private terrace and has direct access to the pool. Cool throughout the summer, this is where you come to escape the sun and simply relax or play cards. The room retains a natural grace, with its high ceiling, tall columns and the old mangers running down two of the walls. Situated at the base of the tower is the kitchen. True to form, it is a place where everyone seems to gather. The island provides a natural divide to allow the ‘cook’ to perform in front of his audience. Outside there is a shaded terrace and BBQ. Off the kitchen is the dining room where the table seats twelve. One whole wall is taken up with our quirky collection of various bits and piece; once described as “high kitsch”! There is a 20 by 5 meters swimming pool shared with the other three units.
A Memory: We moved into the house in June 2003 and never thought it would be 15 years before we had a toilet or heating in the building!

Beautiful Italian hideaway with amazing facilities and hosts who go above and beyond.
This is a beautiful place to have a holiday in Umbria. It is off the beaten track but within easy distance of Perugia. You can also travel further afield to Florence, Rome and Assisi. The accommodation is lovely and very individual with some amazing art work throughout. The pool is stunning with gorgeous views over the countryside. What makes this place special though are the hosts Andrew and Hugue who make all visitors feel so welcome. It’s a real gem and go there if you can!!

Casale Monticchio is an oasis in central Umbria. A beautifully and lovingly restored farmhouse, we found it to be perfectly positioned to explore the many hill towns of Umbria (far less touristy and crowded than Tuscany) while also enjoying the quiet of the countryside and the amazing infinity pool. The layout of the apartments was fantastic as we could each have our own 'space' then come together for dinner each night. It is ideal for couples, families and/or gatherings of friends. We have already booked the entire place next year for a friends big birthday!

About the host
Hosted by Andrew Fielder & Hugues Beranger
Andrew originally trained as a furniture designer/maker and then studied art/architecture. Hugues is the linguist whose interests include cooking and history.
We should state that Monticchio is our permanent home and feel extremely lucky to live in such a wonderful place and enjoy sharing it with our guests.
Having bought the property and become involved in the local community we realise the responsibility we have taken on in restoring Monticchio. It has taken many years to complete all the works but the friends we have made on this journey so far, prove that it is a worthwhile road to follow.
Also at Monticchio is: 3 cats Luna, Sybille and Dora, plus Timo and Picco the two donkeys, a horse, Lambada, and our Boxer dog , Maude
Why they chose this property
Casale Monticchio is incredibly peaceful. When we started the restoration of the property , we had to have for the building permit a day and a night survey done to check the 'noise' for the building permit and the result was that during the night Monticchio was the more silent place you can get on ...earth! One of the important thing as well is that there is almost no direct light pollution at Monticchio and we and our guests are to see enjoy a full starry sky at night. Our aim while renovating, was that each apartment /house would have its own individual character, a place where our guests would look forward to returning to after a long day of exploring or lying by the pool. They are furnished with special pieces we have collected over a long period of time and each object has a story attached to it, which we are always happy to share. We always encourage guests to tell us if they feel something is missing or if there is a way we could improve the accommodation.
What makes this property unique
There is a 20m x 5m infinity pool shared between our guest and friends. The swimming pool is lined in stones and It sets away from the houses and apartments and the large terrace have a view of the valley with the river and the hill covered with wood. All the apartments have Wi-Fi and there is a separate laundry room for guests to use.
