A most wonderful stay

We stayed here for 5 nights . From booking to the actual stay- communication was fab. Lights were even kindly left on for us due to a late arrival so that we didn’t stumble in the dark. A cosy pretty cottage on a beautiful estate. A super easy train ride into Edinburgh. Absolutely would stay again- 5 star from us !

Fantastic weekend

The cottage ticked all our boxes. Log fire, large kitchen, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, set in beautiful Scottish countryside, close to Edinburgh.

A comfortable stay

Contact and info provided by Arniston Estate prior to arrival was first class. The cottage (Lime) was comfortable for two people, although it sleeps 4 there is only enough room at dining table for two and only two chairs provided. This was perfect for us. Wifi was strong with no drop outs. Log burner was great. The walks around the grounds were great some amazing looking trees in the sunken garden straight out of lord of the rings by the looks of it. Enjoyed watching the bats flying in and out of the eaves of the cottage. Nothing bad to say.

Cosy cottage in a stunning location

We loved our stay at Arniston, our cottage had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and it is in a beautiful location. We were able to walk our dog around the grounds (she says lots of exciting sniffs - highly recommend!) and enjoy the huge old trees that are all over the estate. Henrietta the owner didn't intrude but was always happy to help if we had a question. Edinburgh is a short drive or train ride away (but do bring a car as the location is very rural - part of the charm), so you can really mix town and country. It is also easy to get to the Scottish Borders and visit the castles and abbeys dotted around.

Lovely traditional cottage in a lovely location

This is the second time we have stayed in the cottages. It’s in a lovely location and is very convenient for us visiting family in the area. The cottages have many traditional features which are lovely albeit some are looking a little bit tired, however, excellent value for money.

An excellent stay

The location is perfect. Just to the south of Edinburgh, within easy reach of interesting places such as Rosslyn & Stirling.A long, tree-lined road leads up to the cottages. The cottage itself was clean, with everything you could need to make your stay comfortable. We took the tour of the house, given by Henrietta and her mother who filled it with many personal anecdotes and observations. Much better than a dry talk from someone with no connection to the family. My favourite room, the library. I would love a room like that. The grounds of the estate are also worth walking around, with the Sunken Garden being particularly nice.Overall a perfect place for a relaxing break away from everything.

Nice Cottage

Full of anticipation we started our journey to Gorebridge. The driveway to the cottage is absolutely beautiful. The cottage itself has a cozy vintage look in a quiet location. Exactly what we were looking for. The fireplace was already prepared for the first time using it. We had a very nice, comfortable time here. What I need to criticise is the kitchen, which disappointed me somehow. In the pictures it looks quite modern and well equipped. Unfortunately, the kitchen furniture is worn and getting old. The dishes are limited, which means that I had to rinse them several times because otherwise there wouldn’t have been enough. There were no lids for the pots. The cleanliness in the cottage is good according to the circumstances.

Autumn Stay

Lovely stay at Lime cottage for a week with our two dogs. Well furnished though took a while to warm up. Could do with a few more lights outside especially when needing to take the dogs out when it is dark. We would easily stay again.

Nice little spot

We four (three adults, one child) enjoyed our four night stay at Lime Cottage. Convenient for what we had in mind re visiting relatives in the area. Also convenient train service to Edinburgh. The estate grounds are lovely (mid-Sept). Gentle if manicured walks and pleasing views of.the Pentland Hills.

6/10 Okay

Disappointed with the overall condition of the property.

Kitchen worktops and cupboards needed to be cleaned before use. Dirty marks on several of the electric fires. Stains on the living room chairs. Paint work needed wiping . Dust and cobwebs found. Felt that the whole property needed up update. Location was great and grounds were beautiful.

Lovely break

The cottage was perfect for our stay, safe location for our children, near railway station. Having access to free firewood was a lovely touch.

Lime cottage is in a lovely venue!!

A bit disappointed in some aspects of housekeeping ie., oven needed cleaned, some crockery needed washed, toaster had a lot of crumbs on tray, vac cleaner brush head full of dog hairs, outside front door mat very dirty. We groomed our dogs everyday after exercise to keep the cottage clean and had crates for them to sleep in at night

Another short stay at Arniston House

4 nights at the Lime cottage this time. Again, overall an excellent stay with great value for money and beautiful grounds to explore. Lime cottage benefits from the ground floor ensuite bedroom, which suited the wife and I perfectly. Cozy nights with a fire in the living room and ability to prepare our own breakfast/dinner at our time of choice. As long as you have a car this makes a great base to explore the region and if you don't like navigating the traffic in downtown Edinburgh, just park at either Gorebridge, Newton Grange or Eskbank train stations and hop on the Borders train to Waverly station downtown. All in all a very peaceful stay in a quaint restored stone cottage. We will be back.

Highly recommend

The cottage is lovely and has all the amenities that you need. Great that the cottages are dog friendly so that the beautiful countryside can be explored with our dogs too. Any questions are addressed immediately and I would highly recommend staying at Lime Cottage

Beautiful Cottage

A beautiful cottage and setting, every effort had been made to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The log burner with plenty of fire wood made for cosey evenings. Ideal for trips into Edinburgh.

Excellent

Everything about the stay was perfect. I particularly like that there was not an extra charge for logs. The country side and nature are beautiful and abundant. We felt happy, comfortable and welcomed during our stay. We are going back in November.

Perfect in every way

We have stayed at Arniston Cottages in both Lime & Elm on many visits. Ideal location for Edinburgh and the surrounding areas. Arniston cottages are well equipped with everything you need from good quality linen to a well equipped kitchen. Henrietta and her staff are friendly with quick response to all correspondence. These cottages truly are perfect

Great place, very different from a hotel

Really enjoyed the location and the history of the cottage. I only stayed for three nights. Should have stayed longer. I liked the property. Lots of history there. Much more fun than a hotel. The host, Henrietta, communicated well.

Gorebridge

Lovely place and nice and quiet to get a good nights sleep. It was perfect for the 3 of us as we were really using it to sleep as we travelled into Edinburgh which was quite close, only 30 minutes by train and the drive into town was quick to get to the train. Well located in that regard. Thank you!!!

About the host

Hosted by Henrietta Dundas

Host profile image
My family, The Dundas family, have owned and lived at Arniston for 450 years. We very much enjoy welcoming visitors to the estate to experience the timeless beauty of our home. The current mansion house was built by William Adam in 1726 and many of our cottage visitors enjoy the guided tours which run from May to mid-September. We are so fortunate to live in the country yet we have Edinburgh with all its attractions just a short train ride away.

Why they chose this property

The properties were built in the 18th century to house the foresters who worked on the estate in days gone by.

What makes this property unique

The stunning setting for our properties is always remarked on. Arniston is a designated designed landscape with many ancient broadleaf trees and wonderful woodlands to explore with pets. We have the best of both worlds as the buzz of our capital city, Edinburgh with all its attractions is a 25 minute train ride away.
