About this property

Exclusive Horseshoe barn venue with accommodation

The Horseshoe Barns are 17th Century Grade II listed cow sheds in a semi-circular design now refurbished into a unique venue for a variety of uses. They have been beautifully restored and modernised to accommodate and these Eco Barns are furnished with rustic charm. Utilising reclaimed timbers, wood from the farm, wool insulation and coir matting there is a wholesome blend of natural materials to create a homely space for your group to escape the rigours of everyday life.

Other facilities and mod cons include:
Under-floor heating throughout
Professional-standard, fully kitted-out catering kitchen
Private bar area to use as you wish fitted with fridges, filter coffee machine, urn and dishwasher
Fully accessible ladies and gents washrooms with 6 power showers, 7 loos, lots of sinks and big mirrors.

Wren Cottage has a king, double and four queen single bunks. There is a courtyard with fire tray. The dining room comes with crockery and tableware included.

Hive Hall is currently being used as bunk accommodation.

The Horseshoe barns are all one building with connected rooms. The layout of the barns, from left to right, starts with Wren Cottage (see below) leading through a hallway with washroom into Hive Hall which is normally the main function space. Another hall with washroom lets out to the bar, which leads through to the dining area and adjoining catering kitchen. All rooms have direct access to the courtyard outside with a large fire pit area.

Under sheets, pillows, and pillowcases are provided, you will need to bring your own duvet/sleeping bag & towel (towels stipulated online are referring to hand towels).

Parties and events are not currently allowed under Government Law.
Located on the top of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, at the heart of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) we can be found on the main road (B3134) that links Burrington Coombe with the small city of Wells. Just over 5 miles from Cheddar, 20 miles from Bath and Bristol, and 7 miles from Bristol International airport we offer real hilltop countryside within easy reach. Re-established as an eco-farm we manage this site holistically with livestock and visitors throughout the farming and event calendar year.

The farm is 160 acres comprising mainly grasslands with 10 acres of woodland, orchard and kitchen garden. 3000 ewes, 40 cattle, together with woodland pigs are our means to sell quality produce commercially to specialist and local market outlets and offer our visitors zero food and fibre miles with complete transparency and traceability.

Eco Venue with Accommodation: All the original stone building are Grade II Listed and our Horseshoe Barns are currently the main social space here offering a complete versatile venue with accommodation. Converted from the original cow sheds in the authentic horseshoe footprint, this stone barn has been in operation since 2008 and provides a year round safe space, perfect for gatherings whatever the weather.

Using reclaimed building materials, wool insulation, wood cladding and wooden floors, our central heating system is designed to use home-grown logs and capture solar thermal rays whilst incorporating rain water harvesting to flush toilets that feeds our WET System. Throughout the years we have added solar electricity, additional accommodation units, Saloon and Loft facilities and in 2020 we are excited to be able to expand our eco venue offerings.

Great venue, both beautiful and practical for a large group.

Our hen party had a brilliant stay. The kitchen was brilliant for cooking for a large party, plenty of toilets and showers for everyone, and a fabulous bar for the evening.

Fernhill farm gave us the freedom and trust to create one of the most magical weekends!

The venue is rustic but really homely and has a beautiful vibe. We very quickly felt very at home here. The kitchen was fantastically well equipped and the perfect size so that it was easy self-catering for 80 people! Everyone loved all their different accommodation, whether in the huts, the loft or the wren room. Jen and Jules were really relaxed and supported us and were attentive to all our different needs. Altogether we created one of the most special weekends that any of us can remember!

Cosy and relaxed version of home

We spent most of the time indoors working and cooking together, many cups of tea and coffee. Had an amazing tour with Jen and Andy that helped us connect more to the place and vision. Went for dinner at the Pig in Bath. Self-checked out the following day after an enormous meaty brunch.

We help a joint 50th celebration at Fern Hill Farm and it was amazing. Jen and the team were really helpful during planning it and running the event. We are now looking for another excuse to book something in with the farm....it was that good. Thanks to everyone at fernhill farm

Andy is the full-time nomadic shepherd here, managing over 5000 sheep all across the Mendip Hills:

A lifetime developing skills and a passion for blade shearing is evident through the years representing England at international sheep shearing competitions, along with recognition from BISCA in their Long Standing Service Award 2018 for his contributions to the shearing industry.
Andy trains, teaches, and promotes multipurpose sheep and their benefits on the land. Welcoming urban faces to our rural landscape helps keep the grey Mendip mist at bay through the long shepherding days.

Long-time partner to Andy and mum to Kyle and Seth, Jen is behind the events business and is now turning her attention to natural fibres:

Products with Provenance is our holistic message to re-educate, recognise true potential and incorporate every aspect of our natural resources and the key goal of our fibre business is to reposition wool in society as a primary product rather than by-product from the sheep meat industry. Our fibre shop supplies fleece, yarns, felts, fabric and ready to wear garments.
