Ammonite House is just a short walk away from the many attractions this seafaring town boasts, including the glorious golden beach, the iconic Abbey and picturesque harbour. This is an ideal base for families, as well as friends wishing to immerse themselves in an idyllic holiday by the sea. With an open-plan living and dining area where you can wind down in an evening together, this is a spacious and welcoming space. The sofas are nestled around the feature fireplace and TV, with a dining table at the opposite end of the room. From the dining area step through into the well-equipped modern kitchen, which leads out onto a newly installed decked area with seating. Upstairs on the first floor you have a beautifully presented double bedroom with soft luxurious bedding. This bedroom has the bonus of a TV, so you can indulge in a long lie in with your favourite show as well as breakfast in bed. Up to the top floor you have a pretty double room under the arched ceiling, bathed in light from the Velux windows. There is plenty of storage for all your belongings, as well as its own TV. This room is not suitable for children under 8 due to the stairs up to the loft room. Each bedroom has its own character and charm, with personal touches and attention to detail.
Whitby is part of the Jurassic coastline, where if you look carefully you may find fossils including ammonites along the cliffs and on the beaches. The town has a fascinating history, including Vikings, smugglers, saints and even tales of a vampire. This is a great destination all year round, with its regular festivals and events such as the Whitby Regatta and the bi-annual Goth Weekend. There is a large selection of pubs, quaint antique and gift shops, and famous fish and chip shops. The local bus tour is an excellent way of visiting some of Whitby’s highlights including the stunning Whitby Abbey and St Mary’s Church, accessed by 199 steps which were made famous by the novel ‘Dracula’. From the marina you can join a boat trip where you can catch your own fish or join a trip out to sea to do a spot of whale watching.
There are many pretty resorts dotted along the coast including Sandsend, Runswick Bay, Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay, which are great for exploring our maritime history including Captain James Cook, smugglers and pirates. The area is a haven for walkers and cyclists, and many walks can be accessed from your doorstep including a riverside walk along the River Esk and a lovely coastal walk along the disused railway line between Whitby and Scarborough, known as the Cinder Track. The Cleveland Way snakes along the coast and is a must for those who enjoy the great outdoors. Falling Foss Waterfall, Roseberry Topping and Sutton Bank are just some of the beautiful natural attractions in the area.
Ammonite House is also the perfect base for exploring the North York Moors National Park. Travel by steam train into the depths of ‘Heartbeat’ country, where you can explore the vast wild moorland dotted with quaint rural villages. The traditional seaside town of Scarborough is down the coast and offers an open-air theatre, a waterpark and a Sealife Centre. The medieval walled city of York is well worth a day out with its National Railway Museum, cobbled shopping streets and a myriad of bars and restaurants, all within the city walls. Thrill seekers can have a day out at nearby Flamingoland.
Please note: There are open, steep, spiral or narrow stairs at the property.
