About this property

Historic Fisherman’s Cottage Whitby Quiet Old Yard Sleeps 6

A traditional 200-year-old fisherman’s cottage set in one of Whitby’s most beautiful and historic old yards, right in the heart of the old town and just a 2-minute walk from the harbour.

Endeavour Cottage sits within a quiet cul-de-sac of just six cottages, facing original historic outhouses. This rare setting gives the property a real sense of peace and space, which can be hard to find in central Whitby. Even on busy days, the yard remains calm and tucked away, with no passing foot traffic — often, the loudest sound is the seagulls.

Despite the peaceful location, you are perfectly placed for exploring Whitby. Shops, restaurants, the harbour, beach, abbey steps and main attractions are all just a short stroll from the entrance to the yard.

The cottage is double-fronted, giving it a more spacious and open feel than many traditional Whitby cottages, while still retaining its original character and charm.

Endeavour Cottage sleeps up to six guests. The main bedroom features a very large and exceptionally comfortable bed with a high-quality mattress and topper. The second bedroom has twin beds, and additional sleeping is available in the lounge on a double sofa bed.

The living space is comfortable and practical, with fast wireless broadband and TVs in the lounge and bedrooms, making the cottage suitable for short breaks, family stays and longer visits.

A free parking permit is provided for West Cliff car park, which is a short walk away. Guests can also briefly stop nearby to unload on arrival. The property is pet-friendly.

Bed linen is provided. Towels are supplied for up to four guests.

This is a traditional period cottage, best suited to guests who appreciate character, history and a unique Whitby setting. It is not a modern hotel-style property, but that is part of its charm.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. I’m pleased you liked the central location and that the parking was useful during your stay. I’m sorry there was no tea towel available. That should have been provided, and I will make sure this is checked properly for future guests. Thank you for pointing it out. Best wishes, Alan

The house itself was lovely. Great location and lovely quiet alley way just off a big bustling street, very close to everything you could want. House pretty worn and in need of a bit of love and attention but comfy beds and basic amenities. Could have been cleaner. Communication was pretty rubbish, I think mainly down to translation issues maybe? Seemed like all communications were written by AI. Don't think I'd be quick to book again on vrbo

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. I’m pleased you liked the house itself, the location, the quiet setting, and that you found the beds comfortable. I’m sorry to hear that you felt communication was not as good as it should have been. My mobile number was included in the welcome message sent out before your stay, and guests are always welcome to contact me directly by phone, text, or through the Vrbo platform if anything needs attention. I do not recall any specific communication issues being raised during the stay, but I’m sorry if anything felt unclear. Regarding the cleaning, we have used the same well-known Whitby cleaning company for several years, but I fully accept that if things were not quite right on this occasion, that is disappointing. I will take your comments seriously and raise them so standards are kept where they should be. Thank you again for your feedback. It is useful and appreciated. Best wishes, Alan

Property was a lovely cottage but think new mattress is required on one of the single beds as I could feel springs and bed was a bit shaky every time you turned over in the night , and the bed settee downstairs think that needs replacing as the person that slept on that could feel springs we had to put covers over it so it didn’t make it too uncomfortable for them there was underwear left in the wardrobe in the spare room but other than that all good

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. I’m glad you enjoyed the cottage overall. I’m sorry to hear that one of the beds was not as comfortable as it should have been. I will certainly check this. We have recently replaced the double bed mattress with a very comfortable one, which many guests have commented positively on, and the single beds are memory foam mattresses, but I will still inspect them properly to make sure everything is as it should be. The sofa bed is already on our list to look at replacing, so thank you for pointing this out. Previous guests have generally found it okay, but I do think it may now be the right time to upgrade it. I’m also sorry that underwear had been left in the wardrobe. That should have been picked up before your arrival, and I will raise this with the cleaning team. Thank you again for your helpful feedback, and I’m pleased you enjoyed the other aspects of Endeavour Cottage.

Great location easy access really cosy property. Only one issue with tge listing is that it states it is a 3 bed with one bedroom being a double. One with two singles and one with a futon. There was only two bedrooms and the other bed was a bed settee in the front room which is not what we wanted and as there was five people one person had to sleep in the living room. Aside from that we had a lovely time in a central location

Hi Sharon Thank you very much for your review and for the very good score. I’m really pleased you enjoyed the location, the easy access, and found the cottage cosy. I’m sorry there was some confusion regarding the sleeping arrangements. I would just like to clarify that Endeavour Cottage is described and photographed as a two-bedroom cottage, with the additional sleeping space being the sofa bed in the living room. That said, I completely understand that mistakes can happen when booking, especially when arranging accommodation for a group. Thank you again for your kind comments, and I’m glad you still had a lovely time in such a central location. Best wishes, Alan

Short Family Stay

Property is centrally located and exactly as described. Parking permit is great also. We did however raise some concerns with the cleanliness as found worn underwear in one of the rooms and milk in one of the bowls! There was also a funny damp smell we could not put a finger on. Might be because an old property and terrible weather whilst we were there but made it difficult to relax on one of the sofa's. Super communication with the landlord.

Hi Byron, Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. I’m pleased you found the cottage centrally located, exactly as described, and that the parking permit was useful. I also appreciate your kind comment about the communication. I’m very sorry about the cleanliness issues you mentioned. Items left behind by previous guests and anything not properly checked before arrival should have been picked up, and I will raise this with the cleaning team. Regarding the damp smell, this is not something guests have generally raised with us before, but I do take the comment seriously. Endeavour Cottage is an older Whitby property, and poor weather can sometimes affect how these traditional buildings feel, but I will certainly keep an eye on it and check that everything is as it should be. Thank you again for your feedback. Best wishes, Alan

Not quite ready for VRBO but convenient

The location was great, but had to park several blocks away. The description says washer and dryer. There was a washer, but no dryer. The owner told me the day before we were to be there that they do not supply shower towels. We traveled from the USA and needless to say we did not bring towels. When I asked for them, he said he would supply them and when we arrived they were not there. We had to use 3 tiny dish towels that we found to dry off. There were cleaning supplies all around, a lot of clutter in the wash closet and under the stairs that either needs to be cleaned out or locked away. Location was great and we were able to walk to all retaurants, shopping, etc. failrly easily. It was a great little town to explore.

We really enjoyed the stay, the location was perfect and the free car parking permit gave us peace of mind even though we couldn't park at the property. There's an hour parking in the street by it though which was fine for unloading anyway. The main double bed was a bit soft and high as I'm quite short, but otherwise the cottage was great. The lounge was comfy in the evening.

Thank you, Judith. I’m delighted you enjoyed the cottage and its location. I’m sorry you found the main bed a little soft and high. It is a high-quality bed that many guests say is extremely comfortable, but mattress firmness is very much a personal preference, and I completely understand your point. Thank you again for your helpful review. All the best, Alan

I loved the cottage, it was clean but it could do with a deeper clean. Under the settee cushion was full of dust and dirt. Under and behind tables and settees there was dirt. The bedding could do with changing as the quilt was stained. The property needed a deep clean at regular intervals, it would greatly improve the overall state of the property. The parking permit was great, the only problem I had was it was too far from the property and a better map of the parking would have helped and more information about parking rules in Whitby. I did enjoy my stay in the cottage and instructions about the cooker we would have helped with using the cooker. It was my first time to Whitby and I did enjoy my stay but a bit more information about finding the cottage and parking rules would have helped before I arrived, I noticed several people trying to find their cottage, it is obviously a problem for people renting the cottages and as I paid for cleaning I would expect to rent a clean cottage.

Hi John Thank you for your review and for your kind comments about the cottage and your stay in Whitby. We do take feedback seriously, and following your comments we have added an additional check to our cleaning routine to make sure areas beneath and behind furniture are included. Regarding finding the cottage and the parking, we already send guests detailed arrival instructions which we have used successfully for many years. These include the address, directions to the yard, a description of where the entrance is located, and separate directions to the parking area at the top of the hill. We have had very few difficulties reported with these instructions, so at present I’m not sure there is much more we could reasonably add without making them overly complicated. That said, we appreciate you taking the time to give detailed feedback, and we’re pleased that overall you enjoyed your stay at the cottage. Regards Alan

I bought I never cottage in 2008 and since then it has been a true pleasure business meeting and providing for many people's holidays in Whitby.

Why they chose this property

The thing I liked about Endeavour Cottage is it's in a small cul-de-sac yard which is very very picturesque and characterful. Indeed it has won as one of Whitby's best yards and as featured in many books because of its history. Set in an extremely quiet location whilst being right in the very centre of everything and only 2 minutes stroll from the harbour. If you want to experience an old fisherman's cottage with the luxuries of the 21st century I don't think you'll be disappointed.
