About this property
Fives Court Cottage
In the peaceful village of North Cheriton, surrounded by the glorious Somerset countryside, is Fives Court, a beautiful historic cottage of traditional stone, converted from a 17th Century barn.
Inside, the kitchen-dining room has been refurbished, and has beautiful flagstone floors. With plenty of worktop space and a dining table to seat four, it is very well-equipped with electric oven and hob, washer-dryer, dishwasher, kettle toaster and microwave.
The living room is wonderfully homely and welcoming with a wood-burning stove, leather recliner sofas and freeview TV, perfect to relax and unwind after a day of exploring in the fresh air. There is also an additional table and chairs in the living room, great for jigsaws, crosswords and poring over the OS map planning the next days route!
Stairs from the living room lead to the first floor, where the cosy bedrooms have a lovely cottage feel with old exposed beams and sloping ceilings. The master bedroom has a king size bed, and the second has two singles. The bathroom is also up on the first floor and has a full size bath with an electric shower over.
The cottage is situated in the courtyard opposite the owner's house, where there a picnic bench on the gravelled area to sit out and enjoy the afternoon sun, and also off-road parking for one car.
The gate to the road can be closed if needed, for the safety of young children.
There is also a selection of pets including chickens, rare breed Zwartbles sheep and Shetland ponies, which the owners will happily take guests across the fields to see.
The high wall on the cottage end has given Fives Court its name, being historically used to play the ancient ball game of Fives, and is one of only six remaining walls from such an early date across all of Somerset and Dorset.
The village of North Cheriton is a designated conservation area, and is an ideal base for walking with lots of circular walks straight from the door using country lanes and footpaths. The two closest pubs are The Old Inn at Holton, which is a very pleasant 3/4 mile walk and is dog friendly, and The White Horse, which is a short drive at approx a mile away.
The small town of Wincanton is only 3 miles away and has supermarkets, a post office, pubs, restaurants, and a wide selection of take-aways. The larger town of Yeovil is roughly 12 miles distant.
Local attractions include the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton, Haynes Motor Museum at Sparkford, and Shaftesbury with the famous Gold Hill. The market town of Sherborne, with its Abbey and two Castles, is just 6 miles away. Many events such as Sherborne Country Fair, a Classic Car Show, and a Firework Extravaganza are held in the grounds of the new Sherborne Castle.
There are many National Trust properties in the area including Stourhead with its world-famous 18th century garden, Montacute House, Lytes Cary Manor, and Barrington Court.
At Longleat, there is the famous safari park as well as a beautiful stately home and garden. Close by are Wincanton Racecourse, and also the apple orchards and gardens of the Newt in Somerset.
Near Shepton Mallet is the Bath and West Show Ground , which hosts many events, including a 3-day agricultural show in May. For steam enthusiasts, take a trip on the East Somerset Railway.
Also within easy reach by car is the Jurassic Coast (World Heritage Site), popular with fossil hunters, with geological features such as Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, the harbour town of Lyme Regis with its famous Cobb harbour wall, and Abbotsbury with its swannery and gardens. There are some lovely sandy beaches, including Weymouth and Swanage. Chesil Beach and West Bay are popular with sea anglers.
