About this property

Stunning hilltop Tuscan farmhouse. Private pool with spectacular views.

Our 4/5 bedroom, south-facing Tuscan farmhouse offers breathtaking views of the Apuan Alps and the hilltop town of Sommocolonia. With no immediate neighbours, Montate is accessed via a 400m private road, ensuring complete privacy and tranquillity. There is a private heated saltwater pool, various outdoor eating areas and barbecue, and a wonderful sun deck from where you can enjoy the views. Inside the house facilities include 4 bedrooms - 2 kingsize, 1 twin and 1 bunk bed room, 2 bathrooms - one with shower, one bath/shower. Fully fitted kitchen/diner with dishwasher, oven and fridge. Washing machine and additional fridge/freezer. Sitting room with smart TV, DVD player and DVD library. WiFi access and Bose bluetooth speaker. The outside chestnut house has been converted to offer an additional mezzanine-level sleeping area and living room/games room space below. Please note this is separate from the main house, albeit only a few steps away - so the nearest bathroom is in the house.

The house is in a rural area which is a 15/20 minute drive to the nearest town - Barga. It’s perfect for those looking to get away from it all and relax with family and friends. It’s not the best option for those looking to be at the centre of the action, although day trips to Lucca, Pisa, Florence and the beach are all manageable from the house. Barga offers several excellent restaurant/bar options in addition to supermarket and other amenities and a local taxi service is available for those who would prefer not to drive.

The property is run by our amazing manager Serena and her family. She lives close by and is on hand throughout your visit to help with any questions or issues at the house and can also help enhance your stay by helping you with local advice and bookings for trips or restaurants.

Peaceful retreat

Spectacular location off the beaten track

We loved our stay at Montate. The route in was fun in itself - tiny winding roads up the mountainside. And the property is completely charming. Beautifully done and thought out in all respects - both for practicality and aesthetics. The views are unsurpassable. Lots of different places to sit around the estate while soaking up sun, or enjoying some shade. Allows for different conversations to be in train in different places. And the pool was fabulous. And a properly rural feel, properly out on its own away from others. Overall, we had an excellent family time: thank you so much!

Stunning location and villa

Montate provided everything we needed for a very relaxing stay in Tuscany. Splendid isolation, wonderful views, amazing pool and comfortable villa. We enjoyed the drive to and from the villa and Barga (after a few runs) was only a 15min drive away for all shopping and eating out essentials. We took the trian to Lucca and Pisa to avoid parking. Very easy and cheap! Finally, the wildlife we spotted made the holiday truly memorable...eagles, bats, hoopoes, wild boar and snakes. Communication with Sally and Serena was always very efficient and friendly. Wonderful, thank you.

Incredible villa overlooking picturesque Tuscan countryside

Had an absolutely lovely stay for a long weekend with some friends. We would all 100% recommend to anyone. The villa is incredible - beautiful rustic feel to the house but with all the modern comforts you need, stunning panoramic views over the Tuscan countryside, pool table tennis table to relax and a short drive to some picturesque little towns with genuinely breathtaking cultural sites to explore. It’s is even better than the pictures suggest. Sally was a very responsive and efficient host, she made finding the villa easy (despite its charmingly secluded location) and the checkin process was seamless (key in a key drop). She was helpful leading up to the stay with recommendations and suggestions, but also gave us full privacy when there. The checkout process was all very efficient (just leaving the keys in the key drop). We’ll be back!

Amazing views, lovely villa, great hosts

The drive to this Tuscan villa was fun for us. The curvy uphill drive provides many beautiful views of Barga and the Tuscan countryside, but these views do not begin the match what awaits you at the villa. The views there are simply stunning! We stayed in early June and loved the property! My husband and I were there with our two young adult daughters. We stayed four days and the location provided the perfect rest in the middle of our 17-day Italy tour. While the weather was a bit cool, we were able to enjoy the pool one day and it was lovely. We also loved having a fire in the fireplace on a particularly chilly night. The outdoor space is fantastic with great views from every location. The peace and beauty cannot be overstated. Beds were comfy and we had everything we needed for cooking meals. Barga provided ample opportunities for grocery shopping and we had a great daytrip to Lucca which we highly recommend. Communication from the owners and Serena, the property caretaker, was stellar. They are incredibly responsive and kind. We long for the time we can return to this beautiful property!

What a View!

Wir hatten mit 6 Erwachsenen einen tollen Urlaub in Montate. Der Ausblick ist unglaublich schön und das Haus hat alles, was braucht. Serena ist sehr zuvorkommend, freundlich und hilfsbereit! Auch bei kleineren Sonderwünschen war sie jederzeit erreichbar.Bei der Anreise sollte man sich auf die Beschreibung verlassen, weniger auf Google Maps und Co.

Wunderschönes Ferienhaus mit atemberaubender Aussicht

Wir hatten zwei tolle Wochen in diesem mit Liebe eingerichteten Haus. Vom Check-in bis zum Check-out haben wir uns rundum aufgehoben gefühlt durch Sally und Serena (vor Ort). Das Haus liegt auf einem Berg und der Weg ist etwas holprig und beim 1. Mal gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber ist man Angekommen möchte man gar nicht mehr weg. In Barga findet man alles für den täglichen Bedarf und das leckerste Eis weit und breit. Wir kommen gerne wieder!

Just what we needed

We were looking for somewhere that was private and off the beaten track and we found it at Montate. We were looking to unwind and there were more than enough facilities to help us to do this. The pool was amazing and the table tennis was a lovely addition as well. Sally sent directions to the villa which were perfect and appreciated. Serena her husband and father were on hand when needed, we were there 10 days and the pool was cleaned regularly. Would definitely recommend

Ein absolut wunderbares Haus in toller Landschaft

Man merkt, dass die Eigentümer das Haus so eingerichtet haben, wie sie es gerne selbst haben möchten. Alle Details stimmen, von der tollen Lounge am Pool, den Sitzgelegenheiten draußen, den stilvollen Gebäuden und natürlich dem Highlight für die Kinder, dem Pool. Toller Urlaub mit wunderschöner Aussicht

A really nice house, a great host, a magnificent location but you need to drive min. 1h for a visit

If you are looking for rest and privacy in a unique setting you need to be here. Everything is in the house, it's fully equipped but if you want to visit something it's a minimum drive of 1 hour. The host is fantastic and always at your service and very willing to help you.

Thanks so much Geert. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and found the house well equipped and Serena our manager helpful. Just to point out to others, it is a 20 minute drive to Barga from the house. Here there are many restaurants, bars, shops and the old town to explore. So, although it is further to Lucca, Florence and Siena, as we pointed out to you before booking, there are amenities and other places of interest close by. There is also a lovely restaurant 5 mins drive up the hill at Renaio. A taxi service is available for those who would like a night out in Barga. Activities such as the local canyon park for paddleboarding and zipwire is 40 minutes away. Lucca is one hour away by car. Pisa and the coast are an hour and a half and Florence 2 hours. Our Tuscan adventure has included a year living at Montate when our youngest daughter was born in the local hospital. We have enjoyed restoring the property and sharing it with others has been extremely rewarding. We have rented it out from the moment we bought it - our first guests experienced it without the pool and still loved it!

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with the area whilst on holiday in Lucca in 2000 and set about looking for the right property. We decided to base our search around the wonderful hilltop town of Barga, which has so much to offer all year round. When we first saw Montate and marvelled at that incredible view, we knew there could be nowhere else that would match it for sheer beauty and tranquility.

What makes this property unique

The ever-changing, spectacular view is what our guests tend to rave about, as well as the privacy and seclusion. Some guests rarely move from the house, choosing to get supplies at the beginning of their stay and then not venturing far from the pool. Others choose a more active route and use the house as a base for local walks and day trips to the many varied and wonderful Tuscan towns nearby. The house has been decorated and furnished to a high standard and offers various places outdoors and indoors, to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
