About this property
3 Bed in Appledore (oc-rockro)
This lovely, former fisherman's cottage sits in one of Appledore’s most popular locations and offers the most wonderful views over the beautiful Taw and Torridge Estuary. The village is famous for its colourful narrow streets lined with flowers, seafaring character and its delightful setting makes it a favourite haunt of artists, craftsmen and writers.
The property has been renovated to provide a stylish and comfortable holiday retreat and offers a mix of original character and contemporary style. Laid out over three floors much of the original character has been retained in the main part of the cottage whilst a rear extension offers a spacious and bright open-plan living area. The front door opens into the middle level with a dining room at the front of the cottage and the open-plan living room with Juliet balcony where you can enjoy the views. There is also a newly fitted, well-equipped kitchen/breakfast room are at the rear. Steep narrow stairs lead up to the first floor where you’ll find two attractive bedrooms (one with estuary views) and a family bathroom. A modern staircase leads down from the living room to the lower ground floor where the master en-suite bedroom has French doors to the rear courtyard which also has estuary views. Access to the courtyard garden is also available via separate door from the lower ground floor hallway.
The fully enclosed rear courtyard is a real gem with a raised decked area at the far end where you can experience the wonderful views and enjoy al fresco dining. The courtyard directly overlooks the estuary waters where the ebb and flow of the tide provides a wonderful backdrop as sailing boats from the nearby Instow Yacht club, fishing boats and motorboats criss-cross the water and the antics of seagulls and cormorants keep you amused.
A short walk from the property takes you down to the quay, a place very central to village life, with shops, pubs, restaurants and galleries all along this thoroughfare as well as in the quaint cobbled narrow streets leading off. In the summer, you can take the foot ferry across to Instow (or drive the 6 miles around) and discover a lovely sandy beach and access to the Tarka Trail, popular with walkers and cyclists. The popular surfing beach at Westward Ho! and Northam Burrows Park are both within 4 miles and great family attractions such as The Big Sheep and Milky Way are also 5 and 11 miles respectively. So whether you want to relax and unwind and simply enjoy the unique views and simple delights of this historic fishing village, or explore all that North Devon has to offer, this property is an ideal base no matter what the season.
