Birdbrook is a picturesque little village in north Essex, within the district of Braintree, that is said to have inspired the hugely successful novelist's spy books. The name given to this parish is supposed o have been derived from the brook which passes over part of it. Birdbrook is surrounded by the villages of Ahen, Ridgwell, Stambourne, and the more well-known Steeple Bumpstead.
