About this property

Character old cottage in gorgeous Snowdonia location

Cottage set in the Mawddach Valley nature reserve near the Mawddach Estuary, in the Snowdonia National Park.
Beautiful mountain views and lovely country walks; just 3 minutes’ walk from the scenic Cambrian Coastal Railway at Morfa Mawddach and backing directly onto the stunning Mawddach Trail. Activities nearby include mountain biking, golf, sailing, quad biking, clay shooting, horse riding, plus miles of beaches and the sea. Basic equipment such as golf clubs, wetsuits and body boards are available for guests to use.

The location
Situated between mountains, rivers and coastal waters, the elements mingle here to provide clean, crisp fresh air and a coastal breeze.

The cottage
In this “away from the madding crowd” 2-bedroom cottage, you will have access to the entire place.
There is a well-equipped kitchen, bathroom with shower, and a large living room with two sofas, a television and a dining table. Provision for up to 5 guests is available:
• Bedroom 1: double bed
• Bedroom 2: bunk bed with a double at the bottom and a single on top
Solar panels and a heat-source pump provide extra warmth. Please note: the living-room floor has a gentle slope (carpeted).
The cottage also has a private outdoor garden area.
Guest access
Entire house and all facilities.

Other things to note
This is a Victorian stone cottage with original character and antique furniture. It is very much 19th century in style, with a couple of single steps inside. If you are looking for a modern build with brand-new finishes, this may not be the right choice for you — but guests who value charm, history and character usually love it.

The cottage is not suitable for wheelchair or step-free access: there is a step at the front door and another small step from the hallway into the lounge.

Pets are welcome, but we kindly ask that they are kept out of the sleeping areas.

Guest review
“Fantastic location right next to estuary trail. Short walk to Barmouth over the bridge. Accommodation was very comfortable and extremely well equipped with everything you could possibly need. Lots of excellent hikes straight from the door so no need to drive. Cadair Idris a short drive away if need something challenging. DVD collection is huge and board games etc available. Plenty of hot water and solar and mains heating so no chance of getting cold in the winter. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and sure that you would too.”

Cottage was absolutely perfect for us, comfy beds, comfy sofas, loved all the games, dvds etc. Will definitely be booking again. Location is perfect, 2 min walk to train station and only a mile and a half to a beautiful beach. Perfect for a quiet family holiday.

A memorable stay in a beautiful cottage

My wife and I and our seven year old son had an excellent stay in this characteristic and extremely comfortable cottage. An ideal location close to Barmouth and within walking distance of the local train station. Special thanks to Neil, the owner of this stunning cottage. We enjoyed our stay that much that we have already booked to stay again next year! Craig, Sophia and Harry

Cosy cottage

A very quirky cosy cottage. Very warm . In an ideal spot in the country. Ideal for walkers, biker. Next to a walking trail with patthway to Fairbourne and Barmouth overlooking the estuary. Train station about a 5 min walk. The owner has left lots of equiptment to use, bikes surfboard etc. We had to 6 yr olds with us and they loved it

LOVED IT!

The property is indeed quirky but just as described in the listing, and suited us down to the ground as it was something different! Had everything we needed (with the exception of a freezer compartment in the fridge but minor point), and was clean and warm. Huge TV and good wifi. One of the best things for us was the availability of bikes, and we spent 2 of our our 4 days there riding in the beautiful local area. Also had body boards but we didn't have time to use them (and golf clubs etc). Would benefit from automated checking in details prior to the trip as communication with the owner was occasionally a little tricky. Would definitely stay again!

A Bad Experience of ‘Quirky’ - best check every detail WITH HOST before bookingQuirky definition: Unusual in an attractive/interesting way. OK if property listing is accurate at time of booking. For us It wasn’t.For mainly safety reasons I moved some of my family out after 1 day to another place costing 2K. 2 adults remained here to sleep only. UNSAFE KITCHEN ELECTRICS1.Exposed cooker wire into wall mounted socket above cooker is not compliant with safety regs.2.Use of 3 gang extension lead, sitting on kitchen worktop, overloaded with multiple appliances microwave/toaster/kettle is dangerous3.Old electric cooker (no PAT Test evidence ) loose knobs,no control info visibleAll 3 are a fire riskINACCURATE LISTING1.Entrance not wheelchair accessible2.Bedroom too small for bed size; Unsuitable for anyone with mobility issues, especially in the event of fire3. Gold sofabed in lounge not an option according to housekeeper saying ‘ not used, we tried once to get it out & back in, it nearly broke our backs’.4. Bedroom cupboards full of DVD’s/Video’s/Games & virtually no room for our clothes5. No BBQ, Fire Pit, useable garden furniture or mountain bikes on arrival until housekeeper loaned us hers.6. Rotting wooden picnic table gave our 10yr old a splinterHost apologised quickly to complaints & amended parts of his listing. However, as he’s ‘stuck’ in Croatia he wants me to provide a detailed itinerary of remaining listing inaccuracies - that’s not the guests job
Fire Risk - Exposed cooker wire into wall mounted socket above cooker is not compliant with safety regs.
Fire Risk -Use of 3 gang extension lead, sitting on kitchen worktop, overloaded with multiple appliances microwave/toaster/kettle is dangerous
Fire Risk - Very Old electric cooker (no PAT Test evidence ) loose knobs,no control info visible
Entrance not wheelchair accessible. Porch measured 23.5 inches and standard wheelchair is 25 inches.

About the host

Host profile image
The cottage has been a family holiday home since 1970. I've taken it on and dont like to see it empty and so have become a host.

Why they chose this property

My Dad said its the most beautiful place in the world. He hadn't been to many places in the world and so I always questioned him on how he knew. I've since been almost everywhere in the world and now can add evidence, if a little biased, that he was right. Its beautiful, peaceful but also has every outdoor activity imaginable. I'm still in love with it, 50 years on.

What makes this property unique

The cottage was originally a Boar war troop station, shipped back from South Africa and then became a ticket office for the local horse drawn tram. It's nearly 150 years old, slopes a bit and and has character like nowhere else! And is so peaceful and quiet with the most outstanding scenery from the garden.
