Why they chose this property

Orne is a small village of the prefecture of Rethymno located approximately 49 km far from the city of Rethymno and 3 km from the village of Krya Vrysi.

Orne is located on the southeastern foothills of the mountain Kedros at an altitude of 300 meters.

For the first time the village of Orne is mentioned as Ornéa in 1577. It is possible that the village was named after a big fig tree that once grew in the settlement, while the locals also add that the name indicates the existence of a fortress, preserving the memories of a battle with Turks in Kastellos area.

The Orne village, however, according to local tradition, was founded by a small monastery and was originally inhabited by a few nuns. Later, their relatives and other families joined them. It is alleged also that the settlement was created by the merge of the residents of three neighboring villages, who settled there in order to look after their olive trees. Today, it counts only 11 permanent residents.
