About this property

Adirondack Lakeside Log Cabin With Mountain Views

Classic Adirondack log cabin located on 6+ acres of private land, with magnificent mountain views and 400 feet of lakefront . There is a large stone fireplace in the living room, a screened porch, 3 outside fireplaces, a waterfront deck with tete-a-tete, canoes and a rowboat to launch from your own dock. Have breakfast in the fully functional kitchen; refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, blender, pots, pans, dishes -- all the necessities. The new gas grill is ideal for a cookout. The master bedroom offers an Adirondack log bed, while there is a loft area that sleeps four, and a hide-a-bed sofa in front of the fireplace. Watch Satellite TV, DVD movies or just sit outside on your Adirondack chairs, by the campfire, and appreciate the star filled sky.

Surrounded by the sounds of nature you will be reminded that you do have neighbors - loons, ducks, Blue Heron, etc.., Completely private on 6+ acres with 400 feet of waterfront. In the summer pick blueberries down by the dock or across the road. Plenty of dirt roads leading right from the cabin are well suited for hiking, nature walking or biking to discover the beauty and wonder of the Adirondacks.

The Lakes: Mountain view lake is a small private quiet mountain lake home to beavers, ducks and loons. Canoe via a channel and discover Indian Lake. Indian Lake is bigger and better suited for swimming, and tubing. Both lakes offer lots of fishing opportunities; perch, pike and small-mouth bass. Small kids will enjoy the sandy beach area with a wade in point on Indian Lake while older kids (including our labs) have been known to jump right from the cabin's private dock. Both lakes are about 3 miles long -Mt. View is narrow and Indian Lake is wide. The lakes are connected and offer fishing opportunities with small motors, kayaks, canoe, or rowboats.

There are lots of bigger lakes nearby: Meacham Lake, Saranac Lake, Lake Plaid, Mirror Lake, etc.., Fly fishing is renowed at Salmon River. Deer River flow only 20 minutes away offers abundant wildlife, large pike, easy canoe launch and even some trout! Enjoy the St. Regis canoe area and make sure to bring the camera.

The Mountains: Hiking, walking, biking, jogging, running. Whatever you can do with a mountain the Adirondacks is the place to do it. Hike Debar Mountain at Meacham Lake Campground or hike to the top of Azure Mt. with the working firetower but make sure you 'take a rock to the top' to prevent wind erosion. Look for soaring hawks and spectacular views of the St. Regis Canoe area. Dauphin Nature park is only .25 miles from the cabin's front door and offers lots of hiking opportunities without the drive. Paul Smith's Visitor Center offers hiking and walking opportunities for all levels from a climb up Jenkins Mountains to wide dirt paths for toddlers.

The fall is a spectacular time of the year. The Adirondack mountains are encased in autumn splendor and nature is a master artist with a variety of colors; gold, red, orange, etc.... Visit the High Peaks in Keene Valley and be prepared to fall in love!

The cabin: Where do you go to relax? No work, no traffic, no cell phones and no stress. The only thing you have to do is what you want. Build a fire, grab a blanket and listen to the distinct sound of each raindrop while you relax, read or take a nap. Get dressed and get that heart pumping with a challenging hike. Look for wildlife while you hop on the bike or grab the fishing rod and reel in some fun. Rediscover your own voice in nature's golden silence.

Build an outside fire and toast the smores! Throw a log on the indoor fireplace, play cards, watch a movie or look for stars in the nighttime sky. Stay up late and let your body's alarm clock wake you. Snuggle up next to the fire, partner or family pet. Canoe, kayak or take a dip from the dock. You decide! The most important thing to spend is your time. You won't remember the minutes just the moments. Enjoy each moment with yourself or with your family at the cabin on the lake in the mountains.

Picturesque cabin nestled in the woods. Awesome double rocking chair on the landing looks out over the lake which we really enjoyed. The owner met us to give us keys and the lay of the land and it’s clear he keeps the property very well maintained and very clean. The location is great and we had a great time. Local restaurant the Trailside is close - had terrific food and live music too. We will definitely be returning!

Thank you for your review of our Adirondack cabin and grounds. You mention time spent enjoying the waterfront deck. It offers a perfect place to observe the lake’s wildlife residents — bald eagles, blue herons, osprey, ducks and beaver have delighted renters.

I had asked the owner specifically if the drinking water was clean and drinkable which he stated was from a well and was great. It was not anything close to good let alone great. It stunk like sulfur and made both my 7 yr old daughter and 4 yr old son sick. We drove 35 mins to town to buy drinking water. The dock was caked with goose feces and I do mean caked! The owner told us to go ahead and sweep it off. I don’t think it’s out of the norm to expect that issue to be dealt with prior to our arrival. The lake had zero fish.. I didn’t even see a minnow and I went out on the canoe and checked out the entire lake in the vicinity of the dock space. Owner was a nice enough guy and it was nice to be in nature but we wound up leaving a day early because we couldn’t handle the smell of the water anymore when brushing our teeth or showering. I had requested a refund for our last day that we wound up not staying and the owner quickly pivoted to tell me to make sure I left the place clean or he would leave us a bad review. We left it cleaner than when we arrived because that’s the type of people we are. Just want people to know what to expect when renting this property. We rarely get the chance to vacation and we were really looking forward to this getaway with quality fishing etc. Hopefully the owner addresses the issue with the foul water and cleans the dock space properly for the next renters visit. I have not as of yet received my refund for the last day.

I'm sorry to learn that you were not happy with our well water. You are our first renter to express this concern. When I spoke with you, before your time at the cabin, I suggested that you might want to provide your own drinking water, because well water can taste differently from one region to another. When I provided you and your family with an orientationn to the cabin, grounds and waterfront, I told you that ducks might climb up on the dock and "do their business" and that I provide a a push broom, hanging from the boathouse, for renters to remove these deposits. This has been an acceptable option with other renters. Ducks will be ducks. I'm sorry that you did not catch any fish. The lake is considered one of the best fishing lakes in the Adirondacks. Hopefully, you'll have better luck in the future, but I can't guarantee fishing success. When you informed me that you were leaving a day early, I said that the decision to leave was your decision. and I was sorry you were unhappy with your four days at the cabin, but I did not agree to a day's rental refund -- that decision would rest with VRBO, since they have your rental fee.

Beautiful cabin on Mountain View Lake. The place is old but well maintained and very cozy. The porch and the water-side deck (not connected to the house) were especially great. We also took out the boat to do some fishing. The lake is very quiet and peaceful.

A true Adirondack cabin- beautiful log cabin with a screened in porch. A long driveway off a dead end road with no neighbors close by makes this a very quiet and peaceful place to stay. A nice sitting deck with lake and mountain views down by the water and a dock on the lake complete this camp. The host was great, easy to communicate with and happy to share his camp. He made sure we were comfortable and our needs were met. We recommend this cabin and plan on staying there again in the future.

We had a wonderful time and Doug was a terrific host. He met us at check-in, walked us through the cabin, showed us the boats/canoes, and told us a bit about the history of the area and fun places to spend some time. Very charming and rustic cabin, super comfy. It's a very intimate and private setting, secluded but 30min from town. Excellent private dock to launch the boats provided, or to launch your own. Nice paddlers pond, not much power boat action. Herons, bald eagles and assorted cormorants and ospreys were seen. With little noise pollution, was so good to remember what quiet sounds like.Lots of northern pike and some respectable bass in the pond. Very fun place for kids, we brought an assortment of grandkids and they all want to go back next year.Highly recommended.

Fairytale Log Cabin Experience

We were looking for a magical place to celebrate my wife’s milestone birthday. This cabin delivered on all fronts. The property was gorgeous, all six acres providing privacy and a sense that we were miles from civilization. The cabin itself was warm and welcoming. It’s not often that one has the opportunity to stay in a log cabin made of hand hewn logs. Everything about the space was inviting and relaxing. Being surrounded by an impeccably built and maintained cabin added to the overall experience. Our days were spent canoeing on both lakes accessible from the dock, we wish we had more time to explore further down the Salmon River. We watched Osprey from the deck by the lake, saw Bald Eagles from the canoe, listened to the chatter of the ducks and King Fishers, and had a beaver swim right up to the dock at sunset one night. Three Loons fished near the property and their calls filled the quiet most evenings. We can’t thank Doug enough for his hospitality and for preserving this special cabin. His suggestions for local activities and his overview of the property were an added bonus.

Super Cute and cozy çabin

The cottage is very cozy and cute, with log interior with large stone fireplace and gas fireplace. We were disappointed that there was practically no lake or mountain view from the screened porch. Trees and brush obscuring views. The cottage could use a thorough cleaning. Doug, the host, is very knowledgeable about the area and communication with him was very easy. It is best to plan to go to one of the public beaches for swimming or wading.

Thank you for your comments. Yes, there are trees and bushes between the cabin and lake, but the Adirondack Park guidelines discourage opening up lakeside properties. They encourage the maintenance of a rustic setting. When spending time at the waterfront deck there are good mountain vistas and the lake. We work to keep the cabin and grounds clean and orderly. The cabin is checked and cleaned, if necessary, after each renter leaves. When renters arrive we ask that they leave the cabin clean and well ordered when their stay is over, because we do not require a cleaning fee.

Beautiful spot

This was everything we were hoping to get out of a vacation to the Adirondacks. We really enjoyed the scenery and the lake, the local hiking trails and the fishing. The location is very secluded and private, but still within driving distance of activities. The cabin was a bit smaller than I was expecting, but it was a perfect size for our family of 4. It should be said that the loft sleeping area has low ceilings and mattresses on the floor, so good for kids but not really for adults. The screened in back porch was really nice, as was listening to the loons on the lake.

Cozy cabin

Great secluded property with a beautiful cabin. Lots of privacy if that what you looking for. For people that love to swim and have fun in the water, we were disappointed with the lake. It’s simply unusable. I think that should be state very clearly in the description of the property. Yes, you can use a boat, but swimming is impossible. Also couple of kayaks on the property would be great additions. Overall, great place on the lake if you are not planning to use the lake for swimming.

In a nutshell

We were looking for a getaway far from the cacophony of the city and we found it. A very beautiful setting, comfortable surroundings and peace and quiet. The home was beautiful and serene. There were a few issues of miscommunication, however. Upon booking, the listing stated there was a hot tub, which was the sole reason we chose this place over the other two rentals we were looking at. The listing was mismarked and there was not a hot tub, something we found out upon our arrival. Also, this home requires you to bring your own linens (towels, sheets) which we only found out a week before our stay. This caused an issue as we then had to purchase sheets (we only had king size at home) and pack/travel, with those necessities. Had we been flying it would have been more inconvenient. They also require you to clean upon leaving (as though it were your own house and you were expecting company). Since we had a very long drive to come home and we had to pick up my mother-in-law at 7am, having to pack up sheets and clean before we left the residence in the morning would have been taxing, therefore we chose to leave the night before and rent a hotel room closer to her, which was an added expenditure we really didn't need. Had we been made aware of these at the time of booking, it may have been a different story. Would we visit again? Yes, as we are now aware of what is expected. But we were caught unaware. The home, however, is worth the cons. AMAZING!!!

Lovely Camp to stay.

This was our second year at Camp Critter. We all loved our stay. The cabin is so cute and cozy. There is the screened in porch in case it rains. Then there is the lovely deck where you can sit outside when it is sunny, feeling the nice breeze blowing on your skin. Then there’s the seating area down by the lake which is lovely to sit at and just watch the water and the beautiful sunsets. Doug is a wonderful host and so easy to talk to. Our Vacation at Camp Critters

This was our first vacation since COVID and we chose Camp Critters for several reasons, it is dog friendly, lakefront, reasonably priced, and pretty close to where my son lives in Massena. We found it to be better than the pictures on VRBO, so cozy and charming, with a well-equipped kitchen and large updated bathroom. The loft was small since our family incudes 5 adults, but we used the pull out couch and it worked out. Some of the things we enjoyed about the cabin include; 1. We loved that it is quiet and secluded. There were other camps across the lake, but our cabin was surrounded by woods and the lake. 2. We love the view of the lake and mountains from the dock. 3. We really appreciated that there are two canoes and a rowboat with the life jackets provided. We canoed out to the bigger lake and saw a family of loons and a bald eagle. 4. It was a little chilly one night and we loved the cozy propane fireplace. There are also 3 outdoor fireplaces and one in the cabin and firewood is provided. We had fires almost every night. 5. I loved the screen porch and that we could leave the double french doors out to the screen porch open and let those cool lake breezes blow through the whole cabin. Overall this is a great place to get away from it all and enjoy time with your family. It's far from the crowds that you see at the lakes south of here and we loved that. We all want to come back again next year.

About the host

Host profile image
My wife and I are retired public school teachers, who have spent our summers in the Adirondack Mountains for all of our married life. We find the mountains offer us a welcome refuge from the busy work world and a playground that allows us to pursue a variety of interesting and enjoyable activities with our family.

Why they chose this property

Our lakeside log cabin is located on 6+ acres of Adirondack forest land, with no visible neighbors (except for camps on the other side of the lake). This very private type of setting is hard to find on most Adirondack Lakes. It was this location, coupled with the attractive, rustic log cabin that resulted in our purchase of Camp Critters 3 years ago.

What makes this property unique

Past guests have found their time at the cabin to offer a most peaceful and relaxing vacation. There are walking and hiking trails just beyond the cabin's entrance road, while the lake offers enjoyable canoeing, kayaking and boating. Fishing at the lake and on its feeder streams is excellent.
