About this property

Sunlit Comfort on Private Waterfront - Complete Tranquility Minutes from Town

On the shores of a tidal inlet flowing to the Penobscot Bay, Popplewood, built in 2015, sits on two and a half acres of rustic Midcoast Maine just ten minutes from Rockland, with views from all rooms framed by soaring pines overlooking 400 feet of waterfront. The sunny, open lot is bordered on the remaining three sides by woods, for ideal serenity and privacy.

Launch our kayaks or your boat from our dock to explore the nearby waterways, coves, and islands teeming with wildlife, or sit on the wrap-around deck with access from the kitchen and master bedroom to watch butterflies, blue heron, falcons, and maybe even a bald eagle go by.

On the open-plan, high-ceilinged first floor, you’ll find a fully equipped chef’s kitchen featuring granite counter tops, a six-burner stove, and a large island next to a dining table with river views through oversized French doors. (Or eat outside at the cafe table on the deck or the oversized picnic table on the lawn.)

Beyond the comfortable living room is the master suite, with a walk-in closet and large bathroom including an open shower and separate oversized contemporary cast-iron tub perfect for soaking after a day of boating or hiking.

Upstairs are three additional bedrooms – one with a queen bed, one with two twins, and a third with a single twin bed — and a second full bath with a shower and tub.

There’s reliable high-speed wifi and an internet-based landline. All appliances are new, including the washer and dryer in the tiled basement laundry room. The house has excellent cross-ventilation and ceiling fans in virtually every room.

Popplewood is a ten-minute drive from Rockland, home to award-winning restaurants, brew pubs, and lobster pounds, more than thirty-five art galleries, the Farnsworth Museum, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, a multiplex cinema, and the Strand, a non-profit theater hosting films and live performances.

From Rockland, catch the ferry to Vinalhaven or take a short drive up the coast to the picturesque villages of Rockport and Camden. A few minutes south of Popplewood you'll find Tenants Harbor and the ferry to Monhegan Island at Port Clyde village. The Owl's Head, Marshall Point, and Rockland Breakwater lighthouses and their sweeping ocean views are all within a short drive.

Nearby swimming beaches include Birch Point State Park, four miles (ten minutes) by car, and Crescent Beach (nine miles, twelve minutes) as well as many freshwater lakes. There are numerous public boat launches within minutes, as well.

Beautiful setting.
House was comfortably designed and the landscaping reminded us of a nature preserve. Looking at the tide coming snd going was quite restful. Location was accessible to Rockland and Thomaston .

Beautiful yet comfortable…
Our family of 5 found this home to be the most beautiful and most comfortable of all the VRBO homes we have stayed in. Super clean and uncluttered - the high ceilings, large windows, and thoughtfully designed home - made our week there feel special and spectacular. The natural setting of the water and woods was wonderfully quiet. We loved sitting on their the dock at high tide and the use of their high quality kayaks was an added bonus. We had absolutely no issues with the house during our time there but Leo was welcoming and communicative. The documentation he sent us about the house and area was informative and helpful. Our family loved our time at Popplewood and hope to return!

A mid coast gem!
This is one of my favorite VRBOs we’ve ever stayed at. It’s a beautiful home and setting. The kayaks, hammock and fire pit were a treat. The gardens of wildflowers were blooming. The location is great - close to Rockland, Camden, Rockport. We loved Birch Point State Park, the Owl’s Head Lighthouse and Drift Inn beach (awesome at low tide). The home is comfortable and beautifully decorated. But my favorite part of the stay was the amazing collection of books for children and adults! What’s better than reading EB White while in Maine in a gorgeous book loft?! Hope to be back! Thank you for a marvelous stay.

Perfect Escape
I can't say enough good things about this property. The pictures truly don't do it justice, it was absolutely beautiful, comfortable, and relaxing. Close enough to Rockland to not feel disconnected, but far enough away to be perfectly quiet. My family of 4-6 stayed three weeks and this absolutely felt like home. At the end we were not ready to leave...and can't wait to come back.

Why they chose this property

We're longtime visitors to Midcoast Maine who unexpectedly fell in love with a piece of land while we were looking for a vacation home. The protected nature of our spot on the Weskeag River has allowed the native pines to grow to soaring heights unusual in a waterfront property. We designed and built Popplewood to be our Maine dream home, a place that invites the outside in as much as possible while creating a cozy, calm, and always comfortable retreat.

What makes this property unique

Because we spend as much time as possible at Popplewood, the house is furnished with all the comforts and utensils of daily life, in impeccable condition. Our home is your home, and you'll find everything here you need to be happy and comfortable. Water views from every bedroom as well as the main living area and doors that open wide bring the outdoors almost indoors. Step out to enjoy our wraparound deck, firepit, hammock, and native plant gardens that draw birds and butterflies. Or launch your kayak off our dock and paddle to the end of the cove and beyond, passing our local blue heron and a family of bald eagles in their immense nest.
In recent years, nearby Rockland has become a destination for art and arts lovers as well as foodies and boaters. We're fans of the local indie bookstore, the non-profit Strand Theater for movies and performances, and the numerous walks (from easy to challenging) and drives (lighthouses, antiques, mountains, the lacy coastline...).
