About the host
Your host
With a degree in history, a passion for property and interiors, and a deep love of Exmoor, buying the Grade II listed cottage The Oval in Dunster as a weekend bolthole felt like a natural step. In 2008, the purchase was made and a careful, loving restoration began. I was quickly seduced by the thrill of restoring — and in some cases rescuing — these beautiful old buildings, each steeped in history and character. Over time, this grew into Exmoor Character Cottages, a collection of four much-loved holiday homes - The Oval in Dunster, Pilgrim Corner, The Old Sweet Shop and Stone Barn in Minehead's beautiful 'Old Town' or 'Higher Town'. Sharing them with appreciative guests from across the UK and around the world continues to be a real joy.
Why they chose this property
When you see and experience The Oval for yourself, you’ll understand why. Its history, character and setting in the heart of Dunster make it a very special place to own and to share with guests.
What makes this property unique
The Oval offers the rare opportunity to stay in a genuinely historic medieval cottage right in the heart of Dunster, while still enjoying space, comfort and practical features that are unusual in a village centre setting. Despite its age and character, the cottage is deceptively spacious, sleeping six comfortably with flexible bedroom arrangements and two en-suite bathrooms.
One of The Oval’s standout benefits is its two reserved parking spaces nearby, a valuable asset in a village as popular and picturesque as Dunster, where parking is often limited. Guests can arrive, park easily, and then enjoy much on foot — pubs, tearooms, independent shops, the castle, dovecote, Yarn Market, Gallox Bridge and the playground and more. The ever-popular West Somerset Railway can be boarded in Dunster Marsh, a short drive away.
The Oval suits families, walking groups and returning guests who value character without compromise. Backed by over 15 years’ experience welcoming guests to characterful, historic properties locally, guests benefit from careful attention to detail and the reassurance of dealing directly with an owner who knows the cottage — and Dunster — extremely well.
