About the area
About this property
Private Country Estate on Devon and Cornwall Border
Set amidst stunning Devon countryside, this beautiful and spacious manor house offers a luxury retreat surrounded by rolling fields and breathtaking rural views. Designed for comfort and style, the property combines country charm with modern elegance, creating the perfect setting for families or large groups. This beautiful home captures the best of Devon’s countryside living and is an ideal location from which to explore Devon and Cornwall.
Bedford House provides the perfect location from which to explore the highlights of Devon and Cornwall, being positioned on the border between the two counties only 10 minutes drive from the lovely market town of Tavistock, 15 minutes from the A30 arterial route between Devon to Cornwall and 45 minutes from the M5 at Exeter It provides access to the North and South coasts, the vast moors of both counties, and numerous local highlights. That said, there is so much to do without leaving the property that you might decide to park the car on the drive and leave it there until the end of your stay.
The House was built as the centre-piece farmhouse for the Duke of Bedford when he remodelled the farm in the mid 1850s, but there is evidence of Bronze Age inhabitation of our land, and a documented history of farming going back over 1000 years. Today, it retains all the character of a grand country house, including exposed beams and cosy log burners, but, having been completely refurbished, it enjoys modern comforts such as underfloor heating, cinema room, hot tub and ultra-fast broadband. It is a paradise for families, with approximately 15 acres of private grass and woodland, and a stream, where there is abundant wildlife, enabling family members of all ages to reconnect with nature, and perfect for long dog walks. We find the area quite spiritual and one can sit in the meadow and feel the breath of the thousands of years of history that have traversed the same land. If you are lucky, you may well see deer, otters or barn owls, all of whom probably couldn't give a monkey's about the history, but are lovely to see anyway. There is a large (half an acre), well drained level field, perfect for ball games.
The house itself is perfect for entertainment, with a large open plan kitchen/breakfast room opening onto a large deck with uninterrupted west-facing views of rolling hills. There are several other reception rooms, including an exceptional cinema room, complete with huge screen, reclining seats and Dolby 7.1.4 Atmos surround sound. All the 5 bedrooms are a very good size, so no-one will be left with the “short straw”. As well as 3 en-suite bathrooms, there are plenty of other loos, showers and baths too, so no queues and even Great Granny will be happy. The number of reception rooms, and the detached annex mean that there is scope for more than 10 guests at a push. The detached annex does provide for a perfect area to work, should this be unavoidable whilst away, and for this purpose, it is fitted with a desk and high speed internet access. It is also the perfect place for teenagers (or those equally young at heart) to get away from the rest of the family and enjoy a game of pool or air hockey.
There is a field shelter and fenced paddock, so larger horse-flavoured 4-legged family members are also very welcome (keep hooves off of the furniture, though please). Whilst on the subject, up to 3 dogs are welcome, but with the requirement that they do not go onto the furniture, or into the cinema room.
