The Lodge is located within the grounds of Brantwood on the eastern shore of Coniston Water. Brantwood is a historic house which was once the home of John Ruskin, a famous Victorian writer, artist and social reformer, and is now open as a museum showcasing Ruskin’s life and work.

Within Brantwood’s sprawling grounds you’ll find a cafe, extensive gardens, woodland trails and lake access to the shores of Coniston Water. And wherever you are in The Lodge or in the grounds, you can enjoy simply breath-taking views of the lake and Lake District mountains beyond.

The Lodge itself was built by John Ruskin in 1872 and now offers an unrivalled retreat for up to 8 people. Guests at The Lodge have free access both to Brantwood house, its beautiful gardens and lake shore for the duration of their stay. On your doorstep at The Lodge are an array of footpaths, cycle ways, and water-based activities. Why not treat yourself to a wild water swim before your morning coffee or a refreshing dip after a long hike?

After Brantwood closes to the public at 4pm, guests have the spectacular gardens and grounds to themselves - a truly special privilege and one which will ensure your stay at The Lodge provides memories to treasure forever.

Built in 1872, The Lodge is an extraordinary retreat steeped in history and nestled within the breathtaking grounds of the Brantwood estate. It was commissioned by John Ruskin himself and Ruskin’s keen eye and meticulous attention to detail ensured that every aspect of the lodge was crafted with care.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be captivated by the Lodge’s unique charm. Ruskin’s thoughtful design incorporated angle windows strategically placed to capture the awe-inspiring views that surround the estate.

Today, the Lodge stands as a testament to Ruskin’s artistic sensibilities and enduring legacy. Immerse yourself in its rich history as you step into each room, where whispers of the past and stories untold await. The Lodge offers a seamless blend of modern comfort and timeless elegance, providing you with a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
Inside

Entering on the ground floor there are 2 spacious bedrooms on this level, each with twin single beds and enjoying grand Victorian proportions and large windows overlooking the lake.

Also on the ground floor is a shower room with W.C. and basin.

Moving upstairs on the grand staircase there are a further 2 spacious double bedrooms, each with a double bed and with more mesmerising lake and mountain views. Also upstairs is the open plan kitchen, dining, sitting room.

The kitchen is fully equipped with hob, oven, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, microwave, toaster and kettle, while the large dining table provides space for hearty home-cooked breakfasts and sociable evening meals.

The welcoming sitting area has ample comfortable seating all focused around the cottage's log-burning stove - perfect for relaxing evenings after a day's adventuring. From the sitting area, guests can access the cottage's private patio with stunning lake and mountain views; an unbeatable spot for morning coffees or evening drinks with incredible views.

Completing the first floor is a bathroom with John Ruskin's own bath, W.C. and basin plus a further shower room and separate W.C.

Outside
A small patio with lake views for the exclusive use of Lodge guests. Guests also have access to the entirety of the grounds and gardens of the Brantwood estate plus lake access to Coniston Water where you can enjoy paddle-boarding, wild-swimming or simply relaxing by the water. Also on site is Brantwood's jetty where you can catch a lake cruise or via Coniston village via the launch.

Travelling with a dog?
Dogs on leads are welcome within Brantwood's grounds and gardens. In addition, we can offer free use of one of our dog fields in Coniston village for off-lead exercising. Use by arrangement only. Please contact the office for availability.
