About this property
Wolf Cabin at Wilderness Wind, Ely, MN
We are asking our guests to bring their own sheets and pillow cases. Thank you for your understanding.
Wolf Cabin is Wilderness Wind's smallest and most secluded cabin near the shore of Armstrong Lake. This adorable one bedroom cabin with kitchenette and kitchen table is at the end of the road and is quiet and private but has access to all the amenities of the Wilderness Wind resort. The kitchen sink has a water cooler to be filled from outdoor spigot and a half refrigerator, a stove, and a microwave. Hot showers, lavatory sinks, and latrine toilets are a short walk though lovely birch woods, in the bathhouse. Down the grassy path in front is the swimming area with lakeside seating for sunset viewing, access to canoes and kayaks, and a fire pit for bonfires. This cabin is a special intimate place for a couple looking for a romantic getaway from which to base hiking and biking on the Mesabi Trail and day trip canoeing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Shopping for apparel, outdoor gear, and local art can be found in Ely as well as some really fine quality dining experiences. Want to get away alone and get in touch with nature and your quiet side? This a great solo cabin for journaling, photography day trips, working on art or planning projects, catching up on your reading, or just plain relaxing in a beautiful natural setting.

We love staying in the Wolf cabin because it is a little more isolated from the other cabins. It is so cute and has everything you could need for a cozy weekend in the wilderness! We always have a wonderful time with Jay who manages the property. Can't wait to come back next year!!
My husband and I are huge fans of Wilderness Wind and have been coming here for several years. We particularly love staying in the Wolf cabin because it is slightly secluded and so cozy.. A wonderful vacation spot!
Beautiful, peaceful lakeshore resort! Jay was there to greet us and he even built a fire for us every night. No extra charge for the wood. Amenities include canoes, kayaks, and even a paddle boat! Life jackets are provided as well but I'd bring my own to ensure a good fit and comfort. We will return if we stay in the Ely area again!
Property was so simple and beautiful. A great alternative to camping for us in our 60's. Quiet, easy to find, close to the things we wanted to do yet in the outdoors. Biking and hiking were closeby with beautiful surroundings!!! Will recommend and likely stay again...
Had a wonderful time staying in the wolf cabin. It had everything we needed and the cabin and bathrooms are incredibly clean. The property is simple and easy going. We had a wonderful time kayaking and canoeing on the lake. It’s exactly what we were looking for. Thanks for a wonderful stay and we hope to return next summer.
This was such a wonderful property. Right on the shores of Lake Armstrong, there were canoes and a paddle boat available, life vests, and plenty of wood for the fire pit. While each cabin was separate and had plenty of peace and quiet there were also chances to sit around and laugh/talk with other guests. We had a great time and are looking forward to coming back!
The Wolf cabin was a delightful place to stay for some no tech time and relaxation. The manager Jay was terrific…very helpful. We loved the rustic look of the cabin. it was clean, comfortable, cozy, and a short distance from the shower room.
We were able to bring our 10 year old dog with us too. The overall stay was perfect!
I love staying at Wilderness Wind, and this stay was no different. For me, it's the perfect balance of rustic charm and convenience. I enjoy the electricity and stove in the cabin, but I also like the shared bathrooms and group campfire that give it a camp feel. I felt very safe as a solo traveler, and I had a good time trying out one of the kayaks that are available for guests.
We had a last minute change of plans and needed next day lodging. The Wolf Cabin fit the bill and then some. Has a wonderful community intention but if looking for solitude, that's available too. Jay could not have been nicer. Just a few things to note: the bed is noisy, the fridge was turned down before we arrived--turn to a 3 or 4 when you get there, it's well loved and lived in cabin. It is surprisingly well stocked! We would definitely return!

Our place was more than we expected, so many thoughtful little add-ons, it’s a beautiful lake and property. Our kids were camping near by at Bear Head State Park and got rained out. Jay learned of that and txt me to say they could stay in an extra space he had instead of their wet tent - which they did! Jay was so thoughtful and generous, we very much appreciated his gesture. Highly recommend Wilderness Wind and look forward to coming back.
The cabin was simply beautiful. Clean, equipped with a queen bed, propane stove with full oven. The mini fridge had a separate freezer. There was drinking water when we arrived. A sweet surprise was Jay calling and checking us in as we were on our way. Jay also had a fire our last evening which was a great way to visit. Friendly, respectful. Love Lulu as well. We will definitely be back. A little piece of heaven surrounded by calm vegetation and wildlife. You won’t regret it.
We wanted a quick midweek getaway to the northwoods & Wilderness Wind was the perfect spot. There was a snafu with the cabin we rented but Jay was available by phone & we got settled in the Loon cabin instead. Lots of amenities like kayaks, canoes, firewood and fishing poles. We had a super relaxing & quiet time!
the host checked in prior to our arrival to go over check in details. He was very friendly and checked to make sure we had everything we needed on a daily basis. The cabin is rustic and still had everything we needed for utensils.
Remember to bring extra blankets, sheets and pillow cases.
We had a great relaxing time and would make this an annual trip.
Quaint resort with very laid back vibe. As close to camping as u can get, without having to be in a tent or camper, with convenience of a kitchen and bathroom facilities.
Great get-away from the bustle of the metro, daily life, and work.
The Wolf Cabin was exactly what we were looking for in our stay in Ely...simplistic beauty surrounded by nature. We swam, kayaked, fished, ran, read, sat by a gorgeous campfire at night and took in the brilliant night sky, and enjoyed the sunshine and dry air. Perfect get-away for a no-fuss, relaxing vacation. Wish we could have stayed a few more days!!
My wife and I just got back from a 3-day stay at the Wolf Cabin and had a great time. The cabin is small, but just fine for a couple - we would've been just fine here for a longer stay, but could only stay for 3 days. Everything you need is in the cabin. Kitchen was well-stocked and what wasn't in the kitchen could be found in the main communal cabin. The lake is amazing! We were in 3 times a day. The Wolf Cabin is the most intimate and secluded of the cabins and we really enjoyed it. Highly recommended! We'll be back for sure!
This is a rustic property, but that is what I love about it. Had a wonderful time enjoying the wilderness, swimming in the beautiful, clean lake and the very friendly atmosphere. Would absolutely come back!

About the host
Hosted by Owner / Property Manager
Wilderness Wind is owned and operated by Chicago Voyagers, a nonprofit that provides outdoor active experiences to urban youth that would not otherwise have access to such opportunities. Youth participate in biking, hiking, rock climbing, camping, and river and lake canoe paddling trips. Included are trips into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness that include wilderness canoeing, portaging, outdoor meal preparation, camping, wayfinding, and appreciation of the unique habitats of the BWCAW. Kids develop self confidence and are specifically taught leadership and teamwork skills. Your stay at our cabin helps support these programs! Thanks!
Why they chose this property
Staying at our rustic cabins offers guests a chance to experience the same flora and fauna of the Boundary Waters that the youth participants experience but with the comfort of comfortable beds, kitchens, and nearby hot showers and toilets in the bath house. Guests can paddle canoes on the lake and enjoy a campfire, hear the call of loons, enjoy sunsets over the water, and in doing so, feel a little closer to our natural world.
What makes this property unique
One of the greatest things about Wilderness Wind is the peace and quiet of the local environment. People come to Wilderness Wind to get away from the noise of the city and to be close to nature.
Rustic log cabins, secluded site, proximity to Lake Armstrong shoreline, lake access for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, proximity to BWCAW and Mesabi Trail, sunset views, naturalistic landscaping, quiet respite to connect with nature.
From a recently published book by our neighbor to the north of us, David Okerlund:
“What makes our refuge so special is its solitude. At night the sky is crystal clear, and the only sounds you may hear is the crackle of your fire, an occasional forlorn call from a loon to its mate, and an even more entrancing high pitched wail of a grey wolf. Each sound we consider to be a priceless experience”.
We agree completely with David and others who have worked hard to build a quiet community here on Lake Armstrong. We would like everyone who visits us to experience this slice of solitude too.
Therefore, we ask that you do your part to keep Wilderness Wind quiet. Don’t bring your jetski or your bass boat with 300 hp engine. A small engine on your fishing boat is of course fine. Kids should make noise (or they wouldn’t be kids!) so we’re not trying to stifle fun but we do want everyone to respect the quiet that emerges at the end of every day for all to enjoy.
