This newly constructed walkout apartment is just a few feet from the enchanting sounds and solitude of Spring Creek. Huge front windows provide great light and visibility of the creek, willows, scenic bridge, pine trees and surrounding mountains. It does not seem like you are on a lower level. Good internet and cell service is available. Very open floor plan in the round makes for great family space accented by the natural pinewood bar and autumn gold slate gas fireplace. Located three miles south of charming Hill City, guests are only a short stroll from the Mickelson Trail, 15 minutes from Mount Rushmore and Sylvan Lake, 10 minutes from Custer, 30 minutes from Rapid City, and less than one hour from Deadwood and the winter sports areas near Lead.

This is a spacious fully furnished walkout apartment with huge windows and a large private patio where the gurgling brook, meadow, and scenic pines invite exploration. Deer, turkeys, and chipmunks are frequent visitors. The creek has catchable rainbow trout.

This circular shaped structure is a "Mandala" kit home and fits into this alpine hillside beautifully. The cozy furnishings and natural Black Hills slate gas fireplace will help you relax after a day enjoying the historic sites and unforgettable adventures which abound in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
The master bedroom has a comfortable queen bed and a direct opening to the patio. The second bedroom also has an excellent queen size bed.

The activities available are beyond description but some of our favorites include:
Biking and hiking on the Mickelson Trail
Eating at the Alpine Inn in Hill City, Skogen Kitchen in Custer.
Hiking to the top of Black Elk Peak (tallest peak between the Rockies and the Alps)
Fishing
Historic sites galore- Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave, Badlands National Park, Pine Ridge and Wounded Knee, The Open Cut at Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, etc.
Swimming at Sheridan, Sylvan, Pactola Lakes, Cascade Falls, Hippy Hole, Angostura Reservoir
Devil's Tower
1880 Train
Black Hills Geologic Institute
Lost Cabin Brewery
Centennial Hiking Trail
Picnics anywhere
Wine on the patio and watch the sunset
Look for satellites in the incredibly bejeweled starry heavens
Exploring the art galleries
The wildflowers
Horseback trail rides
Chuckwagon rides and suppers
Rock climbing with Sylvan Rocks
And the list goes on...

We would love to share our prized piece of these amazing Black Hills!

Perfect getaway

We loved the proximity Hideaway was to all the things on our list to see and do. We could leave out early in the morning and explore, come back for a nap, and then go out again. Hideaway was very peaceful at night. We enjoyed sitting outside and listening to birds and watching wildlife. We saw deer, a groundhog, rabbits, birds, and a chipmunk. The manager responded to questions and this place was exactly as advertised. Would definitely recommend.

Beautiful Black Hills Cabin

We had a great time. Highmark is a great little cabin for our family. We got to see almost all that the Black Hills have to offer and it’s location is perfect. We saw Mount Rushmore and Needles Highway, Devils Tower and the Badlands. The only thing we missed out on was the Jewel Cave because of some flooding.

Family Vacation

Our family stayed in the cabin during our recent trip to South Dakota. The house was tidy and met the needs of our group. My son loved the lovely creek that runs through the property and it was nice that a trail had been mowed through the grass near it so that we could walk and enjoy the view.

Beautiful Place in a Great location!

Right in the center of the Black Hills, this place was a perfect starting point for us to explore the area. Drinking wine while listing to the creek in the evenings is a definite plus. Communication with Jeannie was perfect. The bonus recommendation of a completely unexpected, truly exceptional restaurant was one of the highlights of our trip. We hope to return soon.

Beautiful, Comfortable and Convenient

The property is centrally located with quick access to many Black Hills attractions with a grocery and restaurants within minutes. The house is very clean and the kitchen came well stocked with tools as well as various sundries like spices, oils, coffee filters, etc. Beds and furniture were comfortable. The creek on the property provided easy hours of fun for our kids to explore and fish.

Great centrally located quiet setting!

We were pleasantly surprised by the setting where Highmark resides. There is a lovely tranquil creek running through the front of the property and a grass area for the kids to play and wind down after a day of sightseeing. We saw deer across from the stream each morning. The house is new and inviting! Ample room for our family of 4 to eat, relax and sleep. The owner is very nice and excited to have us enjoy the property he worked so hard to create! We recommend Highmark as a place to stay on your next vacation to the Black Hills!

Convenient and comfortable

The property was very convenient and 10 min from both Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Also very close to Custer State Park. The unit was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with everything needed to cook. The unit is close to the highway but we didn't really hear any of the road traffic and it was quite easy to access. The one downside is that it is a lower unit so we could hear people in the unit above us moving around in the living room but the bedrooms were quiet. The owner and the property manager were VERY responsive and quick to answer any questions. Overall this was a great property.

The owner was kind and was easy to communicate with. The property was clean. The downside to this property is how close it is to the highway and the noise of the cars. Additionally, there was someone staying upstairs and we could hear every footstep. This made sleeping past 7am difficult and didn't make it feel very private. I hate leaving a negative review. Our stay just wasn't as relaxed and comfortable because of these issues.

Having grown up in the southern Black Hills (Edgemont), I have looked for years for a vacation home location closer to my roots. When this undeveloped piece of land on the banks of Spring Creek became available, I jumped at the opportunity to build my dream retreat in the Hills. I selected a Mandala kit home (see mandala.com) as the structure to build as it fit beautifully on the upslope adjacent to the creek. My plan has always been to make a separate apartment space on the lower level that I could offer as a vacation rental so I might be able to offset the expenses of this second home. My wife and I have four lovely daughters all of whom are out of the nest. We all enjoy the outdoors and traveling. We have used B&B's, AirBnbs, and VRBO's ourselves many times and embrace this mode of lodging as much more engaging and better value than a generic, boring hotel room. We are excited that you are considering a visit to the Black Hills. Highmark is centrally located to easily access most of the popular parks, monuments, and attractions. After the day's activities Highmark offers a beautifully secluded creekside location to unwind and absorb the sounds, smells, and sights of our cherished locale.

Why they chose this property

This is close to nearly everything most people love about the Hills. At the end of the day, a great place to relax and recharge.

What makes this property unique

This is the only Mandala Home in the Black Hills. Its unique round shape allows an interesting open floor plan where the family can converse, eat, play, and reconnect. The natural materials of wood and slate create a comfortable and cozy environment. There is a large flagstone patio with a picnic table and chairs from which you can enjoy morning coffee and the musical sounds of Spring Creek.
