Cabin 1 - Cozy Lakeside Cabin with 1 Boat Slip Included
Long before interstates and smartphones, families from Chicago and Minneapolis packed the car and headed north for cool nights, bluegill suppers, and weeks that moved at the pace of the lake. The Birch–Chetac chain was part of that classic summer migration—first by rail to nearby towns, then by highway—feeding a century-long tradition of simple cabins, shared docks, and neighbors you knew by their boat.
Our little Resort and Campground was part of that golden era—built in the 1950s, when cozy, simple cabins were close to the water, mornings started with a thermos and a tackle box, and time moved at the pace of the waves.
We’ve kept that spirit alive. Cabin 1 is a 500 sq. ft. 2 bedroom that sits just steps from the shoreline, where your coffee seems to tastes so much better gazing over the lake.
Inside, you’ll find extremely clean interiors with thoughtful updates for comfort while the vintage layout and the charm of the lake life remains. You’ll love the expansive lake views, and the easy rhythm of a place that hasn’t forgotten why people come here in the first place.
Like many authentic mid-century cabins, ours carry a few unique quirks. This cabin in particular was built to keep the transition from room to room safe and step-free between rooms. The original owners designed a gentle, 5-inch slope (we measured) in the living/dining area which joins the other rooms to each other. Be assured the kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom, and sofa area are all very level—One review called it warped, in which it is not. It was an intentional build. They sure did things differently back in the day and we left it as a gentle reminder of how things were done back in the day! So, if you do have balance issues or vertigo and are concerned with issues the gradual slope may cause, we have 4 other cabins that are totally level with a charm all of their own.
Our Resort is quiet and quaint, focusing on fishing, relaxing or enjoying the outdoor lake life. Our Resort consists of five cabins total (four right on the water), 4 pontoon rentals, and a small campground where evenings settle into crackling campfires, the hush of the lake and if you’re lucky, the call of the loons too!
If you’re looking for glossy and new, you won’t find it here. If you’re looking for clean, simply updated, historic cabins that are reminiscent of the Northwoods as it was meant to be—simple, cozy, friendly, and right on the water—welcome to Cabin 1.

Rick and Shelly were excellent hosts! Always available for questions, kind and friendly. The cabin was spotless and cozy, and the pontoon was immaculate! Beautiful lake, great for fishing and swimming. Peaceful, quiet setting, very enjoyable!
My wife and I were looking for a quiet place to relax and cabin #1 was perfect! For a compact resort/camper grounds, it was remarkably quiet and relaxing. Thanks to Rick and Shelly for making a nice 4 day weekend!

You're welcome David! We hope to see you both again.
Great communication by the owners. Quick responses to all of my questions. Looks smaller in pictures than it is. Comfortable beds. We spent most of our days fishing, slept early, rose early. Though people were close by in camping area, it was quite peaceful. No hesitation recommending this cabin to others.

Clean, well-appointed, comfortable cabins on a nice lake chain
We were very happy with our stay. The cabin was very clean when we arrived and had all the necessary kitchen, bathroom, etc supplies we needed for a weekend away from home. The cabin had a nice view of the lake and we rented a boat which was very well maintained and allowed us to get out fishing and tour Birch Lake and the "big lake" Chetak. The owners were on-site and made sure the resort was safe/secure, also made sure we had everything we needed (even sold us a wheel-barrow full of firewood since we didn't bring any), and also helped us find an open vet clinic on a Saturday when our family had an issue with one of our dogs. We will be back next year!
Cabin was very clean and tidy with all the usual amenities. However, I wished we had read previous reviews. The floor in the small cabin is VERY uneven. It dips at least 12" from corner to corner of the small cabin. We have both suffered several concussions and had terrible vertigo. If I had known ahead of time I would have booked something else. It just never entered my mind that it could be that bad of a slant. Hosts were very attentive to our requests for other issues. Perfect spot on the lake!

We are truly sorry the slant in the cabin was bothersome for you. To clarify, the floor is not slanted corner to corner, but there is a gradual 5-inch slope in the dining and living area. (It has been measured) The kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom, and large sofa area are all level. The previous owner chose this design to avoid steps between rooms, as they felt a gradual slope would be safer than steps to avoid a potential tripping hazard.
Since our cabins were originally built in the 1950s and later remodeled, they do have some unique quirks—this being one of them. We chatted with you several times in depth about other casual subjects during your stay, so we truly wish you had mentioned that this was a big concern/problem as described in this review. We had two other cabins available at the time and we definitely would have been more than happy to move you so you could have been more comfortable. We are happy you enjoyed the lake and a clean cabin. We enjoyed having you both.
This is a fairly nice cabin in a nice location. It is small but everything is situated efficiently. Kind of a tight squeeze for 4 adults but we did well with 2. Some things to point out but didn't affect our stay. We never received a welcome email with the address and check in instructions and subsequent emails were not answered. The hosts were accessible by phone, though. For people that are affected by this, the floor is badly warped. We were fine with it but know people who wouldn't be so thought we would mention it. Overall a nice stay with a resonable price.
We were notwelcome email with address
Only complaint is that check out was at 9:00 am.. we wanted to stay and play longer! Property is cozy but did the trick. Wish there had been a little bigger beds but I don’t think it would have fit. Fun trip fun place to stay fishing was a blast with the kids.
Cabin #1 rocks! Rick and Shelly are wonderful hosts! The cabin has most everything you need...it's super clean, homey and has a beautiful view. Rented a pontoon and had fun swimming and seeing many bald eagles and loons. Would definitely stay here again!
The fishing was excellent!! We caught our limit of pan fish every single day!
The cabin was clean and welcoming. Even though the floors were pretty slanted and the rooms smaller than they looked on VRBO the owners were OUTSTANDING. We’ll definitely go there again.
The owners were great to deal with. Friendly and helpful.
Clean cabin, only downside was the floor of the cabin was not level and was a bit hard to get use to .
Nice to be right by the lake and enjoy the lake and enjoyed a fire pit at night overlooking the lake.
We chose this cabin based on price and location for a girls get away weekend. It did not disappoint. Rick and Shelly were great hosts. The cabin was clean and comfortable. Birchwood is a very quaint little town and had everything we needed for our weekend. We would definitely stay again in the future!
