About this property

Central Bar Harbor. Family and pet friendly.

Central Bar Harbor. One block from shore path and village green.
The Stork’s Nest is so called because long ago it was the town's maternity hospital. It is attached to Arbor House (separate listing with 2 bed and one bath) yet is private and distinct. Together the houses comprise Derby Lane Cottages. Storks’s Nest has its own entrance, porch and large yard. It is steps to shopping and dining and a short walk to the free Island Explorer bus with service for all of Acadia National Park. Use this as your base to explore the beauty of the area, as well as the variety of traditional New England villages such as Northeast Harbor, Southwest Harbor, and Somesville. Take the ferry to Nova Scotia, kayak in the protected bays and estuaries, hike the mountains, bike the carriage trails, or go on a whale-watching adventure. We do all the cleaning and maintenance ourselves and live nearby year round. This house is over 150 years old and does not have AC but the proximity to the ocean typically keeps the area cool. No smoking on the property.

Cute little house in a great location

Cute old house. Heat and bathrooms were a little quirky. But the location is great; walking distance to all major Bar Harbor spots: the car sat idle all week! Over all a very nice stay.

Awesome location

We had an overall amazing trip. The house was big and roomy. There were plenty of beds. The kitchen had sparse items, it we were warned from prior guests so we brought what we needed and are fairly simple travelers. The location was perfect. A literal stone’s throw away from Main Street.

Bar Harbor Hiking Mom/Son trip

The home's location was perfect. It was only a block from downtown and easy walking distance to shopping and dining. The home's property managers communicated well and allowed us to check out two hours later, as we had a late flight. We very much appreciated their flexibility in allowing us to stay longer. The house had everything we needed to make a few meals while there. However, the house could use some updates, and if the owners did some simple things (paint, matching curtains, etc.), it would certainly enhance its appeal. If we return to Bar Harbor, we would consider staying here again because of the location.

Old Gem Just Off Main Street

Spacious old home in almost perfect location for enjoying shops, bars and restaurants of Bar Harbor. There is a little quirky bathroom set-up on second floor with toilet in one room and shower and sink in the next, but owners weren't hiding this and that little oddity pales in comparison to overall comfort, spaciousness and convenience of this property. No A/C, but week we had was in low 80's to low 70's, so no problem. Large open kitchen faces big dining room - living room area, so great for large families to eat and gather. Despite being less than 50 yards from busy street, home was very quiet and peaceful. Plenty of off street parking (3 cars), and you'll be able to leave the cars parked because everything is so close, and free transportation abounds. We would definitely stay here again on next trip to Bar Harbor. Pat Berrigan

Perfect Location

The location of this duplex can't be beat. It is in the heart of Bar Harbor. The home had ample space for our family of 7. We really liked the layout with 3 bedrooms for our kids upstairs and Mom and Dad on the main floor. We wish the occupants of the adjoining living space had kept their dog from barking at 6:15 am a couple of the days, but it did stop eventually. A few condiments (salt and pepper) would have been appreciated, but overall a great experience in a historic home. We hope to return some day!

Great location

Great location, the house itself could use some updates. It's old and the walls, ceiling are paper thin. Doors upstairs don't latch closed and the bed on the first floor makes a very loud noise when you get in it. Overall, the location is what would bring us back.

Perfect spot right downtown but quiet and private

We go to Bar Harbor every year for a week and stay in a hotel downtown. This is our first time renting a house there and it was a great landing spot. Spent the days in the park and had dinners in town at night. The house was dog friendly which was a huge plus. Not sure what the complaint on the master bath shower were in other reviews. My son and his girlfriend are both over 6 ft tall and had no issues with it. Large kitchen, dining, deck with table and two living rooms gave us plenty of room to spread out. Only thing I would have liked were some basics...salt/pepper or coffee for our first morning there. Otherwise everything was great! We would definitely stay here again!

great location very convenient to downtown, however bathrooms are challeging

The location is great. Very convenient for all restaurants and shops! We enjoying walking everywhere! The dinning table/chairs is limited to 5-6 people, not for a large family. Also if you are planning on doing cooking, highly recommend bring your stuff. there is very limited supplies. The most challenging part we found is shower. The first floor shower is very small. I'm 5'5" less than 130bl, I can only stand straight, can't bend. Beside TP and towel, you need to bring all your personal bathroom supplies. When we arrived we were giving a wrong set of key, So we struggled for 30 minutes until someone came over opened the door for us. However, on the check out. We don't have any flexibility for late checkout. Have to be out by 9AM. consider most check out is 10am or 11am.

Location, location, location

This house is in an extremely good location. Just walk outside and you are right in town with shopping and dining just around the corner. A short walk to the Shore Path was really nice for a morning walk. One word of warning...the Chocolate Moose is just about 50 feet away! Pretty dangerous passing that every day! Fabulous goodies in there. Also, highly recommend McKays for dinner. We ate there twice, delish! And great service. The house itself could use some updating, but we were relatively comfortable. The downstairs shower stall literally measures 3 square feet. It took some maneuvering to make that work, and I am a very small person. Better off to use the upstairs tub/shower combo. I am really surprised no one mentioned this in any of the reviews I read. The furniture needs an overhaul, too. I know renters can be tough on things, but the couches really should be replaced. Kitchen was well equipped but has the typical cookware...rather beat up. I know most people eat out, but I cook most of my meals, so I was sorry I hadn't brought some of my own things, as I usually do. There was a blender in the photos so I counted on using that when I got there. It was not there, so I had to buy one. All that being said, I would still rent here again. There was a problem with the water heater, but the owners had it up and running again in just a couple of hours. We sure appreciated the quick response. We stayed here in late April. A lot of shops were still closed for the season. Looks like things don't get going until around Memorial Day and early June here. However, there were still plenty of places to browse and some really good eats in town. And this time of year can't be beat for zero crowds. We went to Acadia almost every day and practically had the place to ourselves. Be aware, though, that the restrooms in Acadia were still closed for the season. I recommend this rental property to anyone who prefers to walk to most everything and would rather leave their car behind for a good part of their vacation.

Charming home away from home

Every member of our extended family found the Stork's Nest to be clean, comfortable, welcoming and well-suited for great wholesome family time. The location was right in the heart of Bar Harbor, yet quiet and secluded enough for us to relax in comfort. We found all of Bar Harbor to be a short walk from the Stork's Nest: Gift shops, ice cream stores, grocery stores, restaurants and the Harbor itself were all a stone's throw from our door. The owners were helpful when we had questions for them. The property was just as you see it on the website, so family members selected their rooms well in advance and moved right in as they arrived. How good is that? If you are on your way to Bar Harbor and have a family or group who need a good size house, give the Stork's Nest a try. We think you will like it.

Snug in paradise

We loved staying here. We've been to Bar Harbor 9 times in our lives - started coming when our kids were small, and this time we had our grown children and their families with us. It was so great to show our grandchildren the beauty and adventure of Acadia. The Stork's Nest was the perfect house for us - tucked away in a peaceful, quiet spot, yet just around the corner from all the bustle and fun of Bar Harbor. Everyone's needs were met with this house, with plenty of room for all the families to spread out and then come together on the deck or in the kitchen for meals. Everyone appreciated the blend of modern amenities with the authentic, historical feel of the house. We hated to leave, and hope to come back soon.
