About this property
Recoleta with History and Elegance large 2,200 sq feet. 3 Bedroom 3.5 Bathrooms
Relive the history of Buenos Aires only 5 blocks from today’s Recoleta village. In 1894, when the country of Argentina was one of the wealthiest in the world with strong European ties, a Frenchman built this elegant residence on Calle Juncal. You can still feel the old world ambiance in the building’s beautiful church-like façade, tall ceilings, and architectural features, but you can also enjoy modern conveniences like a renovated 'American style' kitchen. This large three bedroom apartment (over 200 square meters or 2,200 square feet) has a large master suite with king size bed, walk-in closet and separate bath, shower and toilet areas. There is a second smaller loft bedroom (with 2 deluxe twin beds that can be converted into a super comfy King size on request) with its own bathroom with shower. The third bedroom* is the original bedroom for the live in maid and includes a shower and toilet but is not available to occupy as it is not heated or cooled.
Importantly in a noisy bustling city like Buenos Aires, all the bedrooms are at the rear of the apartment facing into a common area courtyard, not the street.
An office/study with desk, broadband internet access and wi-fi connection is tucked into a loft with skylight off the master bedroom.
*The third very small bedroom (with single bed) and bath in what was formerly the maid’s quarters which could accommodate a 5th person for a brief stay but only on request as it is normally kept locked.
Recently renovated by the same architect who did the Art Hotel, the apartment features 15 foot ceilings in the living and dining areas and master bedroom. The apartment also contains many antiques and features art work by several local artists which we encourage you to discover and enjoy as much as we have. With each trip we make, we add to our collection of Argentine art in the apartment.
The apartment has its own private, elegant entrance with marble stairs up to the second floor (considered the 1st floor in Argentina - but there is NO elevator). World class restaurants, cafes, and gourmet grocery and wine shops are all in the neighborhood and within easy walking distance. Two blocks away you can enjoy the café lined Plaza Mitre for an early morning coffee before setting out into one of the most walkable cities in the world; three blocks in the other direction, you’ll find a Metro stop on Avenida Santa Fe. And with the apartment's central location in the city, everything Buenos Aires has to offer is a short taxi ride away.
Please note on some days when we have a guest checking in and out on the same day, the maid will not always finish the cleaning until 4pm, but you may check in earlier on this understanding. If your going to arrive overnight between 6pm and 8am you need to have booked the extra night in advance. The apartment staff all leave normal family lives and this covers their overtime and expense outside normal hours. For very early check in before 8am or after 6pm you pay USD$50 in cash on arrival to the concierge who checks you in.
Normal check in Mon thru Friday is 2pm to 6pm and there is no extra charge.
Bookings are not confirmed until the deposit has been received. For stays of 14 days minimum an interim maid service is included to clean the apartment and change linen unless otherwise stipulated by mutual agreement.

The loft was spectacular, had everything we needed and extremely cool with exposed brick and wood beam ceilings with accent lighting. We loved it, and the icing on the cake is the location which is an easy walk to Recoleta, the subway, and a dozen restaurants within a block or so. The host was terrific and accommodated all our needs with no hassle. We will absolutely be staying here again!
Hamish was very responsive and pleasant. An excellent host. The location of the apartment was quite central, so we walked to most areas of the city as we had time to do so. This is a very large and beautiful old apartment with high ceilings throughout.
Great location, communication was excellent, check in / out was easy. The apartment is as expected very unique. We had a wonderful time.Thank you....

Thank you Lorena. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay in Buenos Aires and my truly unique apartment in Recoleta. Please recommend us to your friends. Kind regards Hamish
Had a great stay here for a few days. Was a first time visitor to Buenos Aires and appreciated all the advice and communication provided by the owner. Apartment was clean and comfortable and well situated in Recoleta. I would stay again!
Great location in Recoleta. The host was very responsive and we really enjoyed our stay. Whatever you do make sure you visit the bakery right outside your front door. Cheers!
This was an excellent spot. The location was superb, our hosts helpful and communicative (and made us a pizza), and the actual suite beautiful. I would highly recommend this accommodation.
This is a wonderful accommodation right in the heart of Buenos Aires. The location is excellent, very walkable to many of the sights you'll want to experience. The apartment is clean and spacious. The beds were very comfortable, and I loved the neighborhood. The owner is very prompt in answering any questions or concerns one might have. Highly recommend, great value and wonderful place to stay.
We really enjoyed our stay in this property. It’s a gorgeous apartment, and we felt right at home in the neighborhood. We walked all over the city to experience BA authentically and felt very safe. We had quick responses from the property manager when needed any issues addressed. We’d love to stay here again.
Elegant and historic apartment in the heart of the city. Very spacious, full of light, and with french balconies to take the city in! The host and his partners were very available to us during the entire stay, making checking in, checking out, and anything in between seamless.
What a splendid apartment in a marvelous neighborhood. The concierge was very attentive, the accommodations could not have been better, and the central location was a blessing - many sights were within walking distance, as were many really fine restaurants and shops. The pastry shop that was literally next store was out of this world.
We'd happily stay here again!

Thank you Bruce, it was great having you as our guest. Our biggest "complaint" has been the extra weight guests are putting on at the pastry shop next door. Tough problem to fix that one :-) Hamish
We had a rough start with this trip. Weather problems caused an airport closure and we lost a full day of our vacation but communication with Hamish and Frederico, the property manager, was easy and they were very understanding. Once we finally arrived Frederico was waiting for us, he gave us a walkthrough of the property and made sure we knew everything we needed for a great stay. The bed was very comfortable, the kitchen was well appointed. I would recommend a new shower head, but it wasn’t a deal breaker for us. The location is perfect for exploring Buenos Aires. We loved it.

It was great to finally welcome Angel after her weather delayed flight. Federico and I are delighted they enjoyed their stay in the apartment and all that Buenos Aires has to offer.
The apartment is in an older building that shows its age but is commodious, clean and comfortable. Federico the concierge speaks excellent English and is extremely helpful and pleasant. It is a great place for a couple but the second bedroom is up a steep staircase with a low ceiling. Neighborhood feels safe with multiple dining options
We made a great choice of this apartment for our weeklong trip in Buenos Aires. The neighborhood had plenty of great cafes, panaderias, and restaurants, and we always felt safe. Located either walking distance or a quick Uber/cab to just about anything you'd want to do in the city. The property manager, Federico, did a great job making sure we got in okay and took care of any other needs or questions we had. We had a great experience. Highly recommended.
Loved the neighborhood and gorgeous apartment with old world charm. A wonderful location to explore BA and Ubering around is easy and inexpensive. There are many grocery stores, liquor shops, and cafes just steps away - the Gamas panaderia next store has amazing pastries and sandwiches! The apartment is older and has its quirks, so if you are looking for cookie cutter perfection this would not be for you. The main bedroom is a spacious suite but the upstairs bedroom is best suited for children - although the adults managed just fine but they had to duck quite a bit to get in and out! Thank you, we very much enjoyed our stay and would return!

Anne and her companions arrived by Cruise Ship and were the perfect guests. It was a pleasure hosting them and they loved the area. The Gamas bakery next to the front door is irresistible with it's delicious sandwiches, cakes and desserts, exactly as Anne confirmed. We would love to host them anytime. Cheers Hamish
The location of the apartment is ideal for those who enjoy the convenience of upscale local neighborhoods, short walk/taxi ride to most major attractions, lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance but still prefer peace and quiet during night hours. Everything in the apartment is as described on the VRBO site. A bonus if you enjoy French architecture style. The owner and manager are super accommodating and very easy to get in touch with. The owner has put together a set of check-in/out instructions tips on transportation, area stores, currency exchange methods which I would describe as beyond comprehensive; literally everything one needs to know to start enjoying Buenos Aires one hour after arriving at the apartment.

Good location, spacious home
We enjoyed our stay here. The home is very nice, and had everything we needed. The location was good and allowed walking everywhere. There are restaurants, shopping, grocery stores within easy walking.
Our only challenge was with the internet, and since we were on a working vacation, we rely on good, relatively fast internet connection. Some days I had to walk down to Starbucks to get work done. Otherwise, this was a great place to stay during our short visit to Buenos Aires.

Jane was a great guest and it was gracious of her to seek out alternative internet access during her stay when ours went on the blink. Since Jane visited I have personally replaced the entire internet hardware in the apartment with the latest mesh wifi technology from Asus called Lyra. There are now 3 x wifi Lyra mesh transmitters located strategically throughout the apartment and the speed and through put is fast and reliable.
We just left from our stay in Buenos Aires and our family of 4 just loved the apartment and this city!! The apartment has great character, in a lovely neighborhood where we could walk to cafes and wonderful restaurants! We have two younger boys—7 and 10–and the amount of space was perfect for our family! We would stay here again in heartbeat. Hamish is a great communicator and we felt perfectly at home in our first time to Argentina! Miss BA already!

Thank you for being such a nice guest Lucy. We were also sorry you missed a bit of extra time in this wonderful city due to your flight delay from Houston. Obviously a good excuse to come back :-)
It was our first visit to Buenos Aires and we feel so fortunate to have found such a beautiful property. In a word MAGICAL!
From beginning to end we had a great experience with the owner and the host. So helpful and thorough so there were no surprises during our stay. Federico was there for us to answer all of our questions from the minute we arrived to the time we left.
This gorgeous residence is right next to the most lovely little pastry shop, near coffee shops and quaint little restaurants. It is just around the corner from a supermarket and right where you want to be located if you are exploring the city.
If you are looking at where you want to stay during your visit to the area, we cannot recommend this home enough!!
The apartment was exactly as pictured. It was exquisite, living up to an apartment in the “Paris of South America,” exuding elegance with beautiful high ceilings. We felt we were “living the life!” It was very spacious and filled with all the amenities. Just steps outside were a bakery, a wine shop, a corner market, a fruit store, a grocery store, restaurants and fabulous empanadas!!! Federico, the concierge, is a true treasure. He answered all of our questions & more. We miss him already. Thank you Hamish for all that you provided. Our trip to Argentina was perfect.

Thank you for your kind words Lynn. Federico and I love it when a guest appreciates what BA and the apartment have to offer.
My husband and I loved our stay for 13 days in this charming, high ceiling ,old world charm apartment. Even though it was advertised as a 3 bed/3 bath apartment, it was perfect for just my husband and I ,as we did not feel cramped at all.The kitchen was perfect for some light cooking and the fridge enormous.Frederico the concierge was awesome and the owner Hamish was very informative in the information passed on to us. We loved just stepping out to buy fruit from the corner, indulge in pastries from the bakery next door and sample various wines from the neighborhood wine stores. We loved the hustle and bustle of the street. It can get a bit noisy but it did not bother us. There are steep stairs from entrance but for us it was not a major issue. The neighborhood is very safe and has lovely cobbled stoned streets spotted with cafes. We would love to come back and stay here again and have the apartment as a jump off point as we further explore Argentina. Thank you Hamish and Frederico.

Liked: Check-in, location
Disliked: Cleanliness, communication
Needs TLC and a cordial host
To begin, I'll say that we have been staying in similar places (40+ places) in many countries for the last 3 years and have not left 1 bad review until now.
The price of this stay for 1 month was close to what the price of staying in a 5 star hotel (for a foreigner paying in cash) in the city would be, so it is not cheap.
The apartment resembles the pictures, but upon closer inspection the quality does not live up to the grandeur of the place in photos.
Pros:
The bed is very comfortable, the apartment is spacious, great location to move around BA, good water pressure, nicely decorated for the most part, Fede the property manager was very responsive and helpful.
Cons:
There were many (~15) broken or malfunctioning parts of the home.
- broken blinds (in the main bedroom so light came in every morning - these had been broken by a previous guest)
- very dusty and dirty (including dead cockroaches, greasy pots and pans and 1 inch tall stacks of dust on the fans and window ledges)
- sinks with no functioning hot water in the master bedroom
- internet unusable in most of the house despite being told there were 15 mbps - we ended up having to use SIM cards for much of our data
-broken refrigerator shelf (it had been glued back together with a plastic ruler - we received a new fridge upon letting the property manager know)
- etc...
Some of these were fixed during our time there once we pointed them out, but it felt as though we were managing years worth of unmaintained things as guests, while working our day jobs. It seemed as though there had not been a thorough inspection of the apartment done before we arrived.
When we reached out to Hamish requesting a partial refund for the laundry list of maintenance we put time into, we received a very nasty email back where he decided he needed to chastise us. This email stated things such as "do your worst" (on the review), called us Peronists, mocked us for requesting some compromise when the services listed were not delivered and finally told us good luck screwing another company that you use in the future, as if to say we are terrible people.
Despite that, we are trying to leave a truthful and balanced review. Overall, I'd say if the apartment has many of these things fixed, it would be a lovely stay. Unfortunately, that was not our experience and the host's response was the worst part. Unnecessary, unprofessional and blatantly rude.

Thank you for your recent stay at my home in Recoleta. Constructive comments are always welcome.
Any reasonable person reading your review will see it as a tantrum of lies after a clumsy failed blackmail attempt. That’s why I said “do your worst”. You’re obviously quite the professional, after staying in over 40+ short term rentals over 3 years with one host review on your profile. That is potentially a lucrative little earner, gaming the review system during the pandemic.
Seriously though, where are all these 5 star hotels for less than $100/night in Buenos Aires? A Homestay at my Spanish school costs $45/night with a tiny single bedroom and shared bathroom. You’re obviously better at finessing a bargain than I am.
I apologise being unable to come up with the $1,000 cash you asked me for in your email, in return for your positive review. It took me completely by surprise since you had already settled into the apartment for 2 weeks with nothing but compliments to Federico who checked you in.
Federico even waited up late on Sunday night (because you said you were bumped off your flight) to make sure your check in went smoothly, although you did forget to pay him the check in/out fees you agreed to. We also had to move some of the heavy furniture back to it’s original place as you moved it without asking. Just saying?
However, it is good to know your graciously worded review can be bought for a price so other hosts will know in advance what to expect, but be careful you don’t commit wire and mail fraud in the process.
The comfort and enjoyment of our guests is important but we expect them to respect the house rules at the same time.
• 40+ stays in the last 3 years but only one review? Hmm?
• $100/night (or less) stays in 5 star hotels? Wow!
• Broken washing machine? Just needed to connect the hose. Stops flooding.
• A new fridge was planned for some time. Pandemic deliveries delayed it.
• The basin taps worked fine for Federico and I.
• The Wi-Fi is a semi-pro grade Asus Lyra Mesh x 3-node system. Typical speeds are from 100mbps in the main bedroom to 50mbps at the furthest point. This is a BIG solid apartment made of brick and concrete.
• Previous guests rented my home because of the “Antigua” character, the vaulted >20ft ceilings and beautiful parquetry floor. Most guests love the valuable original art on the walls and there is some antique decorative furniture scattered throughout.
About the host
Hosted by Hamish
I fell in love with Buenos Aires and bought this beautiful apartment in the historic and charming area of Recoleta. You can share some of the excitement and interest I discovered by renting this truly unique and beautifully furnished home away from home (greater than 2,200 Sq foot) apartment yourself. I also own great properties in Thailand (Pattaya) and Australia (Melbourne) for rental and you can find them all on HomeAway.
Why they chose this property
I think Buenos Aires is the most vibrant cosmopolitan city in South America. Recoleta is probably the best known part of Buenos Aires with everyone wanting to visit the famous cemetery just a few blocks away from my apartment. You can practically walk everywhere in this central part of BA and just soak up the wonderful vibrant atmosphere and amazing architecture.
What makes this property unique
Loads of fabulous restaurants, coffee shops, supermarkets and art galleries are nearby and you are close to public transport to the city via bus or subway (subte) is 300 meters. There are buses within 25 meters of the front door. The popular shopping precinct of Santa Fe ave is just a 5 minute stroll from the apartment. You are surrounded by beautiful classic Buenos Aires architecture on every corner.
