HISTORY
The cabin was likely built in the 1930's to 50's and was part of a logging operation. The cabin enjoyed phone service for a while from the Narraguagus Telephone Company, which closed operations around World War II. The cabin phone was made out of wood and the line ran along the bottom of the lake.
The cabin was a hunting camp for a few decades. A few deer antlers still hang on the wall. At one point, the cabin had a bear skin rug.
A famous Maine Guide owned the property for a about a decade or so. In 1925, he was the youngest guide in the state. This person designed a canoe that is still in production today.
Prior to 1980, accessing the cabin involved parking a vehicle and driving a Model T about a mile and crossing a low part of the Narraguagus River. Then after parking the Model T, people carried their gear through the woods to the lakeshore. From there, people put their gear into a canoe and paddled across the lake. Later, after years of logging and new roads, today's access just requires 4 miles of dirt roads and 1/3 mile hike.

This was year 2 that we have stayed at the cabin and again it was amazing. The sunrise and sunsets are always beautiful to watch. The cabin is cozy and the area around the cabin is full of things to do while camping. Our dog had so much fun running around chasing chipmunks and enjoying the water. Can’t wait to go back again next year!
We had the most wonderful time. My husband and I travel and camp frequently; often in rustic areas. The layout of the property supported a true getaway. The natural beauty is unparalleled; it is a place for contemplation, creativity and inspiration. Highly recommend but selfishly want this to be kept the secret gem it truly is! :) Our host was very responsive and understood the intricacies this destination requires. He also takes great pride in this very magical space. So happy he is sharing it with others.

You are very kind. Thank you. The cabin attracts cool people. You are welcome back anytime.
This is our third year in a row booking this cabin. Very relaxing and secluded on a beautiful lake. Theres a charcoal grill, a fire pit, kayaks, and a canoe. The walk in is about 10 minutes and can be strenuous if you are carrying gear, but once you’re at the cabin it is definitely worth it. I recommend packing a battery powered. Fan and tweezers because the parking area has a lot of ticks (the area near the cabin doesn’t have ticks). If you want a place to unplug, it’s hard to imagine many better places than this!

Hi, Karl,
It was great to see you again. Thank you for the positive review. A few guests have mentioned a battery-powered fan would be a good addition.

If you want an experience like a cabin at Baxter State Park, but can't get a reservation, this is your place. Not for the hiking, but for the woods, remoteness, woodfires, sitting on the porch, Loons, reading a book, canoeing, sunsets, fresh air, escape.

Surrounding woods and area definitely exceeded my expectations. A truly amazing clean green almost untouched area with clear waters and piney forests. Cabin was very comfortable and came with boats lights and everything we needed to have a great time out there. One of the best off the grid experiences I’ve had. Thanks again!
This was our second time at the cabin and we were just as blessed this trip. Christian is a kind and engaged host and the cabin and its surroundings are wonderful if you are looking for a secluded, peaceful, rustic retreat.
This was, by far, the best getaway we've had. Words cannot describe how wonderful this place is. Christian was the most genuine, gracious and caring host. Simply amazing!
Peaceful, beautiful rustic off grid cabin on a beautiful lake with loons. Wonderful place to reset, get out of the crazy mainstream. Rest!Christian is a wonderful host! Prepares for your stay and answers all questions fully! An incredible experience!
It is a wonderful place ... a feel that was as it was 100 years ago. A rare gem for those that understand real rustic. I hope to return again.

Thank you. I enjoyed meeting you both. The cabin attracts great people like you. Thank you for your staying.
This was an awesome getaway! Exactly as described in the listing, and the lake was even bigger than I was expecting. Me and my dog saw only 2 families the entire week, and had plenty of room to hang out and roam around. Thanks!
Three days felt like a step back in time in this classic camp. Nothing to do but be still in a beautiful place. The far side of the lake boasts beautiful rocks and views of Spruce Mountain. The water was warm, the air clear. Multiple boats for our use were great. We spent hours on and in the water. Christian was a generous and friendly host. Thanks for sharing this place with us.

Hi, Kimberly,
I really enjoyed meeting you, your husband, and your brother in law. You have a great crew. I enjoyed laughing and swapping stories with you all. Thank you for visiting!

Spent the weekend with my girlfriend and 2 dogs up at this cabin as a little getaway. It was very quiet, peaceful, relaxing. From cutting down and dead wood for the fire, to canoeing on the calm lake in the morning, and listening to the loons at night. The dogs absolutely loved the cabin as well. It is very secluded so they loved the off leash adventures nearby the cabin while we played games on the porch and even took strolls through the trails. We will definitely be going back because of how much of a great time we had. If you like the woods and want to get away, I highly recommend this stay.
I was seeking off the grid alone time. This property was exactly that. A wonderful rare find

About the host
Hosted by Christian Gilbert
I'm a hiker, canoeist, and explorer, although the 'normal' life keeps me quite occupied. I enjoy meeting people who are on vacation. And I love talking about places to visit in Maine.
Why they chose this property
I purchased this property from a friend who knew I would enjoy it. She heard me tell stories of how my grandfather was a park ranger. His campground was 7 miles from the parking area. I visited this place nearly every year from age 5. This cabin is a miniature version of grandpa's memorable campground.
