Great place and location
The house was wonderful and the setting was very relaxing. The river access was nice, right across the street, and very pleasant to sit by the Green river and cool off in the swimming hole.

Exceed expectations
The photos do not do this property justice! It's a beautiful, bright home with spacious rooms. The libraries were amazing - anything and everything you could possibly want to read curled up on one of the comfy sofas. The setting is gorgeous. The location was just 15-20 minutes away from Greenfield and Shelburne Falls for access to activities and restaurants. The family of 4 spent time exploring the river and meadow, tossing a football in the yard, playing board games, etc. Hiking nearby was a good way to stretch our legs. We used the gas grill for a cookout. Jeff the property manager checked in on us and made sure we had what we needed for a great time. We had a wonderful family weekend here.

Another Lovely Christmas at Hala's House in Colrain
December 2018 was our second week-long Christmas Holiday enjoyed at this wonderful farmhouse. The kitchen is well stocked with lots of dinnerware, utensils, pots and pans and serving dishes. The beds are very comfortable. All six of us adults were extremely comfortable and pleased. The ambiance of the place is wonderful. Though there was no snow on the ground this year, it was a magical respite. The Colrain Hala House with it's surrounding fields, woods, and Green River are a quintessential piece of New England at its best. What follows are some of my comments after our 2016 stay that did not make it to the VRBO review. (I was too late.) The moment we stepped into the kitchen, it felt like home, only better; more peaceful and relaxing. From rustic shed full of the driest firewood anyone could hop for; to the warm well appointed kitchen; to lovely light filled bedrooms with astonishing views;to the show-stopping library/living room with Rumford fireplace: it's a treasure. The vintage/antique, comfy eclectic furnishings and comfortable beds, combined with the large library of very old to contemporary books complete the allure of the wonderful house. Our snow-covered walks were bliss. The partially ice-covered river and the ancient derelict buildings across it compose a fascinating scene. The tiny quaint church up the road makes the New England experience perfect. It's an enchanting place. We wish we had more time to stay. Thanks for sharing the house with us. We hope to return.

About the host

Hosted by Hala Khouri

Host profile image
Max, a retired school professor, and his wife Joan, an artist and writer, own the property. They sought a second home in the country for summers and holidays, as well as to experience a different lifestyle from their urban life in Brooklyn, NY. Upon retirement, this became their permanent home. The original house (built in 1825) burned down and was completely rebuilt in the similar style in 1990. They now live in California for most of the year so they can be closer to their grandchildren.

Why they chose this property

Max and Joan wanted lots of nature... and they got it! Mountains, the river, open skies, and garden are the highlights. Great memories were created for their family here: swimming in the river, reading by the fire, hiking on the property, and wonderful meals with fresh food and ingredients from the local farmer's market.
