Located on Mt. Desert Island in the village of Hulls Cove, Twin Gables House is a perfect home base for multi-family or couple groups. Guests can share comfortable common areas with family and friends while enjoying the privacy of a bedroom with its own bath. One half mile away is beautiful Acadia National Park with opportunities for scenic drives, birdwatching, hiking, biking, rock climbing, etc. Three miles from home is downtown Bar Harbor with its myriad of shops and restaurants as well as whale watching and kayaking tours.
The house dates back to 1890. It served as the home to the families of pastors of the Episcopalian church in the neighborhood for many years. The mid 1980's brought a damaging fire. The renovations were done with a Bed and breakfast in mind the result of which was 7 ensuite bedrooms. Some of the original wood floors were saved albeit a bit worse for wear. Floor to ceiling windows in the living room and dining room add to the charm. A sprinkling of antiques and many original paintings, many by local Maine artists, adorn the premises. After a busy day enjoying the many area attractions, the comfort of the Twin Gables house awaits you. A comfortable porch with grill and a large backyard lend themselves to cookouts. There is air conditioning available in all the bedrooms as well as the living and dining areas for any hot days you should happen to encounter. There is also Lakewood a short drive away family friendly and perfect for a refreshing dip. Note: Lakewood is in Acadia and you need to display your park pass in your car while you park there.
From the house, at low tide, it is possible to access an expanse of rocky beach which also leads to the popular Chart Room Restaurant - open for lunch and dinner. Just a little further lies the Hulls Cove General Store plus the local post office. The Hulls Cove Visitors Center is just a bit beyond that. It is possible to leave your vehicle behind in our ample parking lot and take the free shuttle bus into Bar Harbor and around Acadia National Park from approximately June 21 until Columbus Day weekend. If you bring bikes you can leave right from the house and get to the park roads and carriage roads from the visitors center. VR124-019

We loved our stay! The individual bathrooms in each room was a real plus! The house had plenty of space to gather, and to have privacy when desired. It was clean and well stocked. The check in and out were seamless. I would definitely stay there again and highly recommend the house to others.
We loved the home. Everything needed was there. The property was very well kept and anperfect location with access to restaurants and the Atlantic ocean. Will definitely recommend!
Very nice place with lots of brs and baths. Kitchen bright, two each washer and dryer a huge plus for 8 of us. Proximity of several restaurants and the Island Bus stop kept our car at the house for several days. Mindy was excellent towork with.
The house was perfect for our large family! Plenty of room and a beautiful setting. Melinda was great and very accommodating in spite of problems with VRBO. We would definitely stay at this property again!
Large, convenient and lovely house. Mindy was wonderful and the house exceeded our expectations. Everyone had their own bathroom with AC, which we needed in mid July.
Twin Gables was the perfect location for us. Walking distance to Hull’s Cove Beach, restaurants, and Acadia Visitor’s Center. Bar Harbor a short drive or bus ride away. The house was very clean and had everything we needed.
Staying at this roomy, well-appointed, neat, and very clean house was a pleasure for my large family. The tidiness, cleanliness, condition, and landscaping were all excellent. Take note that the house is on a busy street, but the street noises never bothered us. The many advantages, amenities, and condition of the rental make it a great choice and I enthusiastically recommend it.
The house fit our needs to a T. It was very clean and well appointed. We enjoyed all of the seven bedrooms and en suite bathrooms. the location was very convenient. We walked to the shuttle bus stop and the visitor center was only a mile away. Downtown Bar Harbor was easily accessible via a short drive or during peak parking times, via the convenient shuttle. The kitchen had everything we needed. We loved it.
Great location for seeing Acadia, bar harbor and the surrounding area. We had a group of 12, it was great having separate bedrooms and baths. Great place to stay.
Had a great family vacation for our extended family. Room configuration was great especially the interconnected twin room for younger kids to one of the adult rooms. Spent a lot of time on the large back deck and only bothered by bugs one night. Kitchen worked out great as we cooked two meals a day and had no shortage of kitchen cookware. Grill was clean and worked well also. Host was very responsive to any questions that came up. Would definitely stay again if visiting Bar Harbor area.
It was a wonderful family reunion from different states. The provisions were outstanding, such as spices, toilet paper, soaps, pots and pans, etc. The location was great for visiting Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We created so many memories as a family. The house was well furnished and provided lots of parking. The directions for finding the house need to be more specific.
It was great with one bathroom per bedroom.House well equiped. Iit was 9 adults, Two Couples and we put two tables together for family dinners Ate out a couple of times and ordened lobster dinners at one of the many Restaurants close by. Busy Street. Too noisy.Checknout at 9am is too early. An extra hour would be nice special y when check in isnt till 4 pm.
We loved this house and were sad to leave. Our group of 10 (2 grandparents and 2 families of 4) were very comfortable and had plenty of room to relax. We slept well. The house is extremely well-equipped. It was clean and welcoming when we arrived. AC in every room was helpful during warmer days. The location was very convenient and it was nice to have more space than we would have had closer to town.Would happily return.
This home is perfect for large group as each bedroom has its own ensuite bathroom. The home is large enough that everyone can have their own space, but also everyone can come together for meals and hanging out together. The host is amazing as well! Would definitely recommend this home!
We had our annual family vacation in Bar Harbor. The house was as advertised. Well stocked kitchen, good bedrooms with private restrooms, plenty of parking. The house was close to Bar Harbor and Acadia NP entrance.
Came to Bar Harbor for a Family Fall Vacation. The location of this property was absolutely perfect - just minutes from downtown Bar Harbor and even closer to the entrance to Acadia National Park. There was more than enough space for our family of five. We could have easily had another family of five staying in the house with us.

About the host
Hosted by Mindy Hill
I am a former Vermonter who moved to Mount Desert Island in 1979 at the tender age of 22, shortly after graduating from the University of Vermont. I fell in love with the ocean, the community of Bar Harbor and the park. I spent about 10 years as an over educated waitress at a variety of area restaurants including the Chart Room which was co-owned by my future husband. In 1989 I was able to hang up my waitress shoes and became the host of the Twin Gables Bed and Breakfast. I raised my two children while operating the b & b for 14 enjoyable years. But B & B's are notoriously time consuming so in 2007 we converted the house to a weekly rental and I have enjoyed more free time in the summer for park activities and the like. We summer in our cabin in the woods, about 3 miles from the rental house then move back in to the main house for the winter months.
Why they chose this property
My husband was working for the previous owner of this property when it was damaged in a house fire. The owner, after some consideration, decided to sell the house as is rather than taking on the renovations. Russ (my husband always the entrepreneur, saw it as a perfect spot for a B&B and the renovations gave us the perfect opportunity to add the private baths that B&B travelers so appreciate. Update: My husband passed away in 2020. I am fortunate that my son is able to assist me with the house and yard upkeep.
What makes this property unique
Probably my two favorite parts of the house are the kitchen window that has views of the ocean (though not as good in the summer as they use to be due to foliage growth) and the back porch which is open air and a wonderfully pleasant place to hang out in the summer. I find the location very convenient.
