About this property
McKenzie Cottage in Scottish Woods
The McKenzie is our three bedroom cottage. It is the property's original 1933 vintage farmhouse that has been remodeled, expanded, and modernized. As with all of our accommodations, it is fully heated and air conditioned for your personal comfort.
Please be aware that our base rate is for double occupancy. Any guests over two need to be added prior to your reservation request.
There are two full bedrooms with queen size beds. There's a queen-size sofa-bed in the media room providing a third sleeping area if needed. The media room has a 55" TV with Roku and Blu Ray player with internet access for Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc.
This cottage is the perfect place for the larger family or group. The wood-burning stove keeps things cozy and warm on those cool autumn evenings. We provide the firewood. All you have to do is light the fire. We have the first one ready for you when you check in.
The county kitchen has a skylight that helps to brighten the entire area.
The inviting hot tub is on the back porch. It accommodates up to four people, with a nice view of the old horse paddock, as well as the mountains in the distance. With a little luck, you may see our resident herd of deer wander through in the morning or afternoon. We also drain and clean the hot tub after every guest leaves. We only add a couple of 1" tabs of bromine (no other chemicals) to insure a pleasant guest experience. Ask our competitors what their policy is.
We are a "no contact" facility. There is no need to check in. You may proceed directly to the cottage. We live on the property but we sell privacy. We are available at any time.

My family and i had a fantastic relaxing time! The cottage was clean and exactly as advertised. Totally enjoyed sitting in hottub, and watching the deer eat. Would totally stay again.
My wife and I both enjoyed our stay. It was like staying with an old friend. Close to Murphy and other places, but not so close that you feel it. Saw deer every day.
Enjoyed the cabin. Very secluded. The Host George is very nice and helpful. He made our stay very easy. When we got there door were unlocked and lights were on. I will stay there again. Recommend it.
I think if you enjoy privacy then is your place to stay.
My wife and I had a great weekend. The cabin was clean, comfortable and private. Great access to hiking and lots to do in the area. We will definitely come back!
Everything was great! Hot tub was perfect and exceptionally clean! New gas grill was nice bonus, grilled some ribeyes that gave us the feel of being at home, but that's what a VRBO is for. Don't let the old time looking rocking chairs fool you, they were very comfy. George delivered, great host, thanks again!!!
It was peaceful and quite we seen not a soul whole time we was there it was relaxing. The wood stove was a great bonus as was the hot tub. Its min from 2 flea markets with fresh produce and antiques great place to stay!!!!!!!!
We had a hard time locating the cottage, but the owner was there to help. Fairly remote area which was fine for us. The place was clean. We could not get the back porch light to work or maybe we just could not find it, but regardless there was a soft light in the hot tub. We enjoyed our time there. Thank you.
From the initial contact with the owner to the end of our visit, it was a great experience. The cabin was perfect for the three of us (my husband and I and our adult son). Very clean and stocked with the necessities. We enjoyed our daily fires in the wood stove (which kept the main part of the cabin comfortable), cooking and eating together in the kitchen, and catching up on favorite TV and movies in the den. I indulged in the hot tub a couple of times, sharing one morning soak with a family of white tail deer. Ideally located, we were never more than an hour from numerous state parks for hiking and small towns for shopping and eating. While we didn't get any snow (we were hoping for just a bit), we enjoyed the beauty of the surrounding mountains. George was a gracious host, available when needed. Couldn't have asked for more.
Just a cozy little cabin to get you away for the week/weekend. Great for single family or small group of friends. Owner was super nice and helped us out any way he could. Overall had a great time in the cabin.
We really enjoyed our stay at this cute little farmhouse. We loved the sound of the screened door, it reminded us of “grandma’s house”. It would have been nice to have had an ice maker in the freezer and lights around the hot tub. We still loved the house and the location. If in the area in the future we would definitely rent again. Thank you Mr. George!
Very misleading, it is not as the pictures show - the landscaping was not maintained well at all (growing rampant) and neither was the outside of the cabin (front porch was dirty and not swept). This made us question the level of sanitation inside the cabin. We contacted the owner who lives very close but could not come up with any solution, so we left. Even though the owner said he would not give a refund, we were not comfortable staying there.

Of course we are disappointed that you chose not to execute on your reservation. Your stated disappointment with the landscaping of a cottage on a wooded estate seems to reflect your unfamiliarity with life in a National Forest. We have long since given up our city views of landscaping. The forest is just that - a forest that grows and shapes itself. We have found what we think is a valid compromise with nature. That is wasn't groomed to your expectations is perhaps a product of unrealistic expectations.
To question our cleaning and cottage preparation based upon what you considered an "unswept" porch is, IMHO, pretty ignorant. Our rentals receive thorough COVID-19 sanitation and preparation after every guest. Hot tubs are drained, cleaned and refilled after every guest. Bromine tabs are added for extra protection.
You demanded a refund based upon your initial unsubstantiated evaluation stated above. The stated focus of your disappointment was that the view from the front porch was supposedly obscured by trees. Yes, we live in a forest and there are trees in a forest.
When you demanded your money back, I did refuse. You wanted to break a contract that both of us agreed to. the conditions were quite clear. I would have had many opportunities to rent the cottage had you cancelled in a timely manner as per the contract. In fact, early on in our correspondence, I offered you another cabin that I thought would better suit the event that you were celebrating. You refused that offer.
Your husband's assumption that I could somehow travel back in a time machine that afternoon and rent to someone else was laughable. Your attempt to blackmail me into a refund by threatening me with a bad review is practically criminal.
In the future, perhaps a trip to Disney World would be better suited for you. A forest venue is certainly not for you.
