It’s surrounded by open space and close to everything. At just five minutes from Mt. Princeton Hot Springs, five minutes from the Mt. Princeton trailhead, fifteen minutes from Buena Vista, and thirty minutes from Salida, this house is the perfect location for a weekend adventure or an extended trip to the Arkansas Headwaters area.
There are plenty of perfect days you can experience in the beautiful Arkansas River Valley and you can be right in the middle of it with your home away from home!
Perfect Day #1: Wake early and sip delicious coffee from the provided Keurig. You need that caffeine because you are about to head up one of Colorado’s fourteeners. Drive just a few minutes down the road, hike Mt. Princeton, and bag the summit on a bluebird morning. Stop back at the house for a late lunch before you soak in the soothing waters of the Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort in the afternoon. Then, enjoy dinner as you relax around the gas-powered fire pit on the patio before snuggling in to a well-deserved night’s sleep on the comfortable queen beds.
Perfect Day #2: Make a big breakfast in your full kitchen. You’re going to need it because you’re whitewater rafting down the world-famous Arkansas River through Browns Canyon. Book your guide through one of the many local services (Noah’s Ark is the best!) and plan on getting wet and yelling a lot. Dry off and relax back at the house before setting off for your evening adrenaline rush. Take your bike and blast down the Canyon Creek Loop single-track. Or for a quieter evening, cast your fly line in the Gold Medal waters of the Arkansas. Fry up your catch when you get home!
Perfect Day #3: Time for a down day. You’ve earned it. Drive a few minutes to Salida and walk through the art galleries and shops before enjoying one of the many local restaurants or microbreweries. The Boathouse is highly recommended. Then stroll along the river walk before grabbing an ice cream at Here’s the Scoop. Before calling it a day, take a stroll from the back yard through the neighborhood in the shadow of towering peaks. Finally head back to the house and unwind with a movie on the 52 inch flat-screen. ( Amazon Prime and more included.) Or head outside to catch a glimpse of the abundant wildlife.
Perfect Day #4 - Fall Edition The fun doesn’t stop in the Arkansas Headwaters when the weather turns cooler. Fall in the Buena Vista means golden aspens and blue skies. Nearby Aspen Ridge Road is a paradise for leaf-peepers. Rent an ATV or ride a bike nearly forty breath-taking miles from Johnson Village to Salida. Absolute Bikes in Salida will shuttle you to the top of the trail so you can ride all downhill, leaving plenty of time to take pictures along the way. Sections of Aspen Ridge are intensely quiet so be sure to a pack a hammock to take a mid-ride nap. Enjoy dinner at Amicas Pizza in downtown Salida.
Perfect Day #5 - Winter Edition The snow is flying, but you’re ready for another outdoor adventure. Our place is only 40 minutes from Monarch Mountain Ski Area. Head over for a day at the resort that Colorado locals love. Spend the day skiing 100% natural Colorado powder, whether you’re hitting the extreme terrain in Mirkwood, the Never Summer Terrain Park, or the moderate blues and greens that start right on the Continental Divide. On the way home, stop at Elevation Beer Company in Poncha Springs to unwind after a full and satisfying day.
Perfect Day #6 - Winter Edition #2 Time for a down day - sort of. Instead of hardcore downhill skiing, you’re doing cross-country. The groomed trails at the Tennessee Pass Nordic Center are second to none. Strap on your skis (or rent for very reasonable prices) and head out on over sixteen miles of set track and wide skate lanes. Ski a peaceful groomed trail and stop by the Nordic Center and savor hearty soup for lunch. Take an afternoon break with coffee while gazing at the picturesque Sawatch Range.
Still feeling adventurous? Make reservations for dinner at the Cookhouse. Take a one mile ski, snowshoe, or hike (you can’t drive there) and savor an elegant evening of four-course dining in an idyllic backcountry setting.
Come see what adventures you can find!

Great location, very clean, amazing shower! :) Great to sit outside and watch the hummingbirds play, and easy access to beautiful trails. We loved our stay!
Beautiful location...perfect for our family getaway
The property was beautiful, well appointed and our hosts were super friendly. Our favorite points...the place felt brand new, it was very clean and had a wonderful "mountain getaway" feel; it was a very quick drive to the Mount Princeton hot springs, and had a full kitchen to prepare meals.
In the morning, we sat out on the back porch with coffee by the gas fire pit in and enjoyed the quietude. We will definitely be back! :)
We visited Nathrop for a ski weekend at Monarch. Our family of 6 found the accommodations comfortable, spacious, and clean. The scenery around the property is beautiful and it’s tucked away so that’s it’s extremely quiet outdoors. The owners set out 2 cots for our kids to sleep on and 2 others shared a queen bed. It was a great sleeping arrangement. We really enjoyed our visit and would definitely return if we visit the area again.
Just right accommodations for our visit!
Everything we needed was ready to relax, cook, sleep well, and feel right at home.
Owners are very nice and readily available for us.
Very nice property in a great location away from town with great views of mountains and the stars. Nice porch to sit out with propane warming stove, but we just enjoyed the sunny patio in the mornings. So do a little bunny!
Hope to see you again!
This was the perfect location to wake up and head out for a 14er summit. We let the owners know how many people in our party and our plans, so the place was set up with extra cots when we got there. We ate dinnerat the nearby restaurant at the Mt Princeton Hot Springs. I wish we could've stayed longer to enjoy soaking in the hot springs after our big hike. We'll be back again!
Above and Beyond: Lovely Home At the Foot of Mt. Princeton
What a wonderful hideaway in the mountains! We had a great weekend at Tennessee Pass and then retreated to our peaceful home near Buena Vista. The location is beautiful and the basement apartment is spacious and quiet.
Jim and Beth were accommodating and helpful. We employed cooking breakfast on their kitchen and played games at the table. Whenever we come back to Buena Vista, we will be staying with Jim and Beth! Thank you, guys!
Our family celebrated Thanksgiving in this lively accommodation. It was restful, comfortable and the views spectacular! Be aware to get accurate directions from the hosts, as map apps are inaccurate for this area!
Wow, what a serene, peaceful, perfect place to stay. At the base of Mt Princeton, the views are stunning from the property. The accommodations are clean and new and inviting. The proximity to tons of activities is fantastic. Jim and Beth are great hosts. Jim came down and spent a few minutes talking to us about the hike up Princeton and the Hot Springs.
All around *awesome* and I'm looking forward to coming again if they'll have us.
My family just stayed 2 nights at the end of our trip - after starting our vacation at a very dirty Airbnb. It was such a relief to stay here - sparkling clean, we got to sleep in a comfy log bed (I’ve always wanted one!), they provide a stocked keurig for morning coffee - and she feeds the hummingbirds! Standing on the patio sipping coffee to the light-saber-hum of those little birds was pure bliss! And it also just happened to be minutes away from our planned horseback riding and hot springs. If we ever get the opportunity to get out there again, we will definitely stay here. There were even board games supplied - it was just perfect!
We spent a few days enjoying the Buena Vista area since I once worked as a camp counselor here and wanted to share this amazing place with my husband. Staying in the lower level of this home is a very convenient way to visit Buena Vista, access the Collegiate Peak trails (Princeton trailhead and hot springs are just a couple of miles away), and St. Elmo (a historic mining town 14 miles away). The apartment - complete with a kitchen, fridge, stove/oven and microwave, 2 bedrooms, laundry room, and a bath - has been recently remodeled - new faux wood floors, wooden doors, and tile work in the bath and shower. It looks very fresh and comfortable. If you step outside the door, you see amazing views of Mt. Princeton and the Arkansas River Valley. Every evening, we enjoyed watching the colorful sunsets. If you need anything during your stay, you can simply ask Beth or Jim because we had some requests and they were so cheerful and quick to respond. We really appreciated how accommodating they were and will stay here again the next time we visit the area.
Great location if you want hot springs. Super clean and new. fully stocked and ready to go. 2 BR and couches. stayed there for leadville training and to soak. This is a basement under a house....but still awesome....
I had such a relaxing weekend! The space was clean, neat and had everything I needed. It was so nice to sit outside on the patio with my coffee and enjoy the quiet and surroundings. Beth and Jim were warm and welcoming. I would definitely vacation there again!
