Tucked into five private acres in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, Circe & Hare is a hand-built log cabin surrounded by gardens, meadow, woods & the Lamoille River. Inside, rustic Vermont character meets art, antiques, beautiful textiles, rich linens & the kind of details that make a house feel collected rather than decorated.

This isn’t a bare vacation rental. We renovated & furnished the cabin ourselves and filled it with things we genuinely love. The result is warm, intimate, comfortable and a little unexpected—a place meant for putting your feet up, opening a bottle of wine and staying awhile.

THE CABIN

At the heart of the house is a soaring two-story Rumford fireplace. The living spaces unfold around it, with deep, comfortable seating, a cozy reading nook and windows looking toward the gardens & woods. Original art, vintage pieces, beautiful rugs, barn doors and natural materials give the rooms a sense of history and personality.

The kitchen is open and welcoming—the kind of kitchen meant for putting some music on the living-room stereo, opening a bottle of wine, making something delicious and settling in for the evening. It’s thoughtfully stocked for people who actually like to cook, with quality cookware, tools and plenty of serving pieces.

If you’d rather arrive and immediately begin your getaway, we also offer a grocery service. Send us your list and we can have your requested groceries waiting at the cabin when you arrive. It’s especially lovely for a late arrival, a birthday or anniversary—or simply when you’d rather begin your first evening beside the fire than at the supermarket.

Upstairs are three sleeping spaces, each with its own character. The romantic primary bedroom opens to a private balcony and overlooks the great room & fireplace below. Two additional sleeping spaces make the cabin comfortable for couples traveling together or small groups. Rich, comfortable linens, warm lighting and views into the surrounding trees make the upstairs especially cozy at night.

The first-floor bathroom has heated tile underfoot, and a washer & dryer are available for guest use.

A CABIN FOR DOING VERY LITTLE

Some of our favorite stays here would barely qualify as an itinerary.

Morning coffee on the porch. A long breakfast with nowhere to be. A book in the reading nook while a fire burns nearby. Music playing while dinner cooks. A walk through the gardens or down to the river. An afternoon nap on the hanging porch bed. Wine on the deck, followed by a soak in the hot tub beneath the stars.

Circe & Hare is comfortable enough that staying home for the day can feel like the best plan you made.

OUTSIDE

Years-in-the-making gardens surround the cabin before gradually giving way to meadow & woods. We’ve created and tended these gardens ourselves, and they change constantly through the seasons. In summer they become lush and wonderfully abundant, humming with bees, butterflies & hummingbirds. Autumn brings the color Vermont is famous for, and winter quiets everything beneath the snow.

The porch wraps around the cabin to the rear deck and covered hot tub, tucked beneath bistro lights and open year-round. There’s a firepit among the trees and, in warmer months, a hanging bed on the front porch that has a way of turning an afternoon into absolutely nothing—which is rather the point.

Paths wander through the five acres, past a small pond and down toward the Lamoille River. Adirondack chairs beside the water offer a quiet place for morning coffee, a book or simply listening to the river. Cool off in the water in summer or wander the property on snowshoes in winter before returning to the fireplace or hot tub.

Our gardens & grounds are organically maintained without conventional herbicides or pesticides—something we especially appreciate for the pups who come to stay with us. Dogs are welcome here because we know a Vermont getaway is even better when your four-legged traveling companion gets to come along.

VERMONT, SEASON BY SEASON

Part of what we love about this place is that there really isn’t one best time to come.

Summer means open windows, gardens overflowing around the cabin, swimming, paddling, hiking and long evenings outdoors. Autumn transforms the hillsides and back roads into a landscape that hardly seems real. Winter is made for snowshoeing, skiing, roaring fires and slipping into the hot tub while snow gathers around you.

And spring—the season people sometimes overlook—is when the woods wake up, the river runs full, the first green returns and Vermont’s famous mud season slowly gives way to another summer.

A REMARKABLE LITTLE CORNER OF VERMONT

The property feels wonderfully removed, but you don’t have to go far to find something extraordinary.

World-renowned Hill Farmstead Brewery is just two miles away, while the acclaimed cheesemakers at Jasper Hill Farm are only minutes from the cabin. The little village of Greensboro is nearby, with beautiful Caspian Lake and Willey’s Store—the kind of old Vermont country store where you can find groceries, wine, hardware and things you didn’t know you needed under one roof.

The Craftsbury Outdoor Center offers miles of trails for hiking, biking & cross-country skiing, along with beautiful lakes for swimming and paddling in warmer months. Lake Willoughby, Burke, Jay Peak & Stowe are all within driving distance when you feel like making a day of it.

But we’re equally fond of the smaller discoveries: farm stands at the side of a road, a gallery you didn’t know was there, a swimming hole, a beautiful dirt road, a tiny shop or a view that makes you pull over.

Greensboro and the Northeast Kingdom still have a sense of place that feels increasingly rare. It’s beautiful without feeling polished for visitors, creative without being self-conscious, and wonderfully quiet without feeling empty.

DARK SKIES & QUIET NIGHTS

One of the luxuries of being this rural becomes apparent after sunset.

There’s very little artificial light around the cabin. On a clear night, step outside and look up—the stars can be extraordinary, and sometimes the Milky Way stretches visibly across the sky. Depending on the season, you may hear the river, owls in the woods or very little at all.

It’s the sort of darkness and quiet that can be startling if you’re accustomed to city or suburban life—and one of the things we love most about being here.

A PLACE FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL—OR NOTHING AT ALL

Over the years, Circe & Hare has become part of quite a few stories. Guests have come here for proposals, honeymoons, anniversaries, birthdays and long-awaited weekends together. Some return year after year.

We’re always touched when someone chooses the cabin for an important moment, but no occasion is necessary. Some of the best stays are simply two people, a dog, a fire, good food and a few days with nowhere they need to be.

More than anything, Circe & Hare is for people who appreciate privacy, comfort, nature, beautiful surroundings and a place with a little soul.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE BOOKING

We want Circe & Hare to be the right fit for you, so please review these important policies before reserving. Our complete Stay Agreement is provided to guests after booking.

• The booking guest must meet our minimum-age requirement, and third-party bookings are not permitted.

• All guests must be registered in advance. Parties, events and unregistered visitors are not permitted without prior approval.

• The cabin is designed primarily for adults and cannot accommodate children ages 2–12. Infants and guests ages 13+ are welcome.

• A signed Stay Agreement and refundable damage deposit are required by our property insurance. The agreement is completed electronically, and the deposit is due approximately seven days before arrival and refunded following checkout provided there is no damage or violation of the agreement.

• Dogs are welcome with approval. The pet fee is $25 per dog, per night. Dogs may not be on bedding or furniture. Dogs must be crated if left alone, and guests are responsible for picking up after them outdoors.

• Quiet hours begin at 10 PM. No parties or unauthorized events.

• Smoking & vaping are not permitted inside the cabin or on decks/porches.

• This is rural northern Vermont. Wildlife, insects, changing weather and seasonal conditions are part of being here. In winter, AWD or 4WD is strongly recommended.

• Cell service can be limited or nonexistent in parts of the Northeast Kingdom. Download your route before traveling and do not allow GPS to reroute you onto unmaintained Class 4 roads.

• The property is generally very peaceful, but a rural road runs nearby and occasional passing traffic may be heard.

• A generous supply of firewood for the indoor fireplace is provided as part of your stay. Additional firewood for the outdoor firepit is available for a small fee.

• We personally care for and clean the cabin, gardens & property. During longer stays or certain seasons, you may occasionally see us tending the gardens, mowing, plowing or performing necessary property maintenance. We’re always mindful of guest privacy.
