The Phat One, also known as El Gordo. Next to the New River Gorge.
The Phat One El Gordo sleeps 8 in 3 bedrooms, has a hot tub, a fireplace, and all the amenities. We call it El Gordo. The name’s a play on words. El Gordo in Spanish means the fat one. Also, my father in-law’s nickname is “Gordo”, and he has always really liked this location for a cabin. Plus, the place is pretty “phat” …or so the kids tell me. Like our other cabins, EL Gordo is tucked into the woods well away from the stresses of every day life. Your Cabin in the woods. El Cuento Del Gordo (The Story Of The Phat One)
A few years ago there was a very heavy winter storm that knocked down several trees including very old Cherry, Walnut and Hickory. Rather than burn the trees as firewood, a band saw was brought in and we made lumber out of the mess. Because of this custom cut lumber we have been able to create a very unique Luxury Cabin with lots of interesting woodwork details. Features like beautiful hand made one-piece headboards and end tables make El Gordo one of a kind. A Little More On Building
A great deal of effort went into making this cabin “green”. It’s super energy efficient, and we used as little forest products in its construction as possible. We accomplished this through an innovative, award winning technology that incorporates Styrofoam and steel. This type of construction allowed us to make a very open and comfortable interior, while minimizing the foot print of the building. EL Gordo was a real treat to design and build. We had a great time fitting all the pieces into the puzzle, and am sure you’ll have a great time staying in it. The Pricing for this cabin starts at the prices listed in the availability calendar at the upper right hand corner of this page and includes up to 6 adults. Hot tub was a big hit! Excellent location to bridge, Fayetteville, and trails. Ultra quiet and private. Many deer around each day. Excellent get a-away.
Third year in a row we have stayed in this cabin. This has turned into a yearly family weekend of rafting, hiking, outdoor fun and the cabin is a big part of it!! Property is amazing, and the hot tub after a tiring day of adventure is icing on the cake!
This is a great cabin-very clean and includes nice features such as the screened in porch/hot tub, fire pit, and grill. Excellent location as well-we enjoyed and would come back. Recommend!
A great cabin in the woods perfect for our trip with three couples. Location was great. The place was unique and private and clean. Would stay here again.
This place was perfect and exactly what I expected - quiet but not secluded, furnished well, and cozy! We fit 6 adults without issue, the hot tub was a great way to end every day, and the firewood from the central stall burned well. Easy to find and centrally located to all the activities we were planning. Thanks so much!
My family and I enjoyed our stay at El Gordo. It was clean and comfortable. The hosts were easy to communicate with. The location is great to hike and explore New River Gorge!
It was a perfect property for our needs....modern but secluded! We enjoyed the hot tub and basically lived on the screened in porch. Loved the grill & everything else that was provided! Would highly recommend!
Great location for visiting New River Gorge National Park
Excellent property as described. Hosts went out of their way to make our stay pleasant… even left cookies for us. The house is less than 10 minutes from the New River Gorge Bridge and Visitor Center.
Cabin in the woods with easy access to the outdoor adventures at New River Gorge. Arrived to find fresh cookies and flowers greeting us. Hot tub a great feature after hiking and rafting.
The cabin was clean and cozy with all of the extras included making packing a breeze. So close to all that the area had to offer too. Would definitely recommend!
Very nice and secluded. We enjoyed the spaciousness of the cabin for 5 adults, a 7 year old and an 8 month old (who learned to climb the stairs to the loft while there!). The cookies and complimentary glasses were a nice surprise.
We brought our family up for a long weekend and loved the cabin. Secluded and quiet, but close to Adventures on The Gorge and Fayetteville. Clean and well kept. Easy check in and attentive manager. They gave us commemorative glasses and even made cookies. We’ll stay there again.
The unit is very comfortable. It is uniquely designed and well maintained. Natural wood slab table.
We had a really nice time. The location is great and the amenities are perfect. Everything one needs is there. It is in a heavily wooded area but still very close to the main highways and the New River Gorge. We used the hot tub a couple times during our stay….very therapeutic and relaxing.
What a great weekend. This was my second stay at the Opossum Creak Retreat. What a great place. Close enough to Adventure's on the Gorge to enjoy the fun, but far enough away for peace and quiet. The Screened in porch with the hot tub was wonderful day and night.
