About this property

17th Century character cottage in pretty Devon village

Sausage Cottage has been lovingly restored over the past 20 years and provides characterful, comfortable accommodation and a pretty garden. There are great walks from the door. The village of Oakford has a lovely pub serving good food (with rooms) called The Red Lion, a large church and a playground with swings and a football pitch. The cottage and adjoined barn boast two sitting rooms, one downstairs with wood fire, stereo and large CD collection. the other upstairs with Smart TV , DVD player/Xbox and DVD selection. The 2 double bedrooms in the cottage share a large bathroom, whilst the two double barn bedrooms are en suite (lower barn has shower/sink/loo. Upper barn has sink/loo). All bedrooms have excellent beds are we often told how comfortable they are. Two wood burners and storage heaters will keep you warm in winter and the well equipped kitchen and lower barn both have underfloor heating. A brand new conservatory offers a light and spacious dining area. Wifi throughout. There are several good walks from the cottage or on nearby Exmoor National Park where you can see wild horses and deer. The north Devon surfing beaches are 35 mins drive away. There are nearby freshwater fishing ponds too. Shopping for antiques, clothes, books and homewares in nearby Dulverton can lead to a great lunch at Woods Restaurant or the Bridge Inn. For a special occasion The Masons Arms in Knowstone is a 13th century Michelin star pub and restaurant.

Jerry and I live between London and Devon. When we are at the cottage we enjoy horse riding and walking on Exmoor and eating at local pubs and restaurants as well as shopping in Dulverton. We have been married since 1998 and bought the cottage shortly thereafter and have restored it gently over this time. We produce children's TV programmes.

Why they chose this property

The ancient cottage and barn is full of character and built over several levels. The garden affords views over pastoral fields and the two sitting rooms allow for kids to watch TV whilst adults sit by the fire with a glass of wine! The pub 3 doors down means you don't have to cook if you don't want to. I am from London and my husband is from the West country so we bought this cottage when we got married so that although we now live in London, Jerry can stay connected with his family and roots.

What makes this property unique

The cottage is in a farming village a very short drive away from beautiful Exmoor where I horse ride but you can also walk and enjoy watching the wild ponies and deer. Tarr Steps neolithic bridge is also great place to visit. A bit further takes you to the North Devon beaches which are famous for their surf but also their huge sandy beaches where you can walk for miles. Nearby Bampton and/or Dulverton has a butcher, baker and other convenience stores, pubs and gift/clothes shops for retail therapy and supplies.
