Mara cottage is part of the 256ha Tahi ecological sanctuary, including restored wetlands, lakes and forests. You will have the choice of walking one of the many tracks, swimming from the beautiful white sand surf beach or fishing and kayaking in the estuary. Surfing lessons and standup paddle boards are available locally, along with horse trekking through the property or along the beach.
Encompassing a rich variety of habitats, Tahi is a haven for walkers, birdwatchers and the conservation minded. Dune vegetation on the surf beach gives way to diverse broadleaf forest on the hills further inland, lakes provide habitat for mullet and rare long-finned eels while mangroves and saltmarshes are home to kingfishers, rare fernbirds and banded rails. Tahi is also proud to host a number of endangered bird species including Kiwi, Brown Teal, Bittern and Dotterell.
The on-site Tahi Cafe offers a blackboard menu of delicious breakfast and lunch dishes, great coffee and Kohu Road icecreams. Open 27th December to February - 7 days a week.
