Te Pahika was built in the early 1900's and operated as a guards van ( train carriage) until 1963 when it crashed at Moana. It has now been beautifully and sympathetically restored to offer an unique accommodation experience. The main carriage houses the bedroom and dressing area overlooking the pond while the newly built "station " houses the fully equipped kitchen and modern bathroom and links to the carriage by a semi covered deck (platform) If you are looking for somewhere unique where you can unwind and enjoy the peace and quiet you will not be disappointed. Te Pahika is set in the middle of our 4 acre property at the end of the pond with a native bush backdrop. Te Pahika does not have a TV. An ideal opportunity to enjoy a good book and perhaps a glass of wine or cup of coffee while you soak up the peace and quiet. A few board games, cards, books and magazines are provided. The complex has a sheltered rustic outdoor bath nestled among a bush backdrop area for you to enjoy. We are ideally located as a base for exploring the West Coast or as a convenient stop en route to other destinations. We are 15 minutes drive South of Greymouth and 25 minutes drive North of Hokitika. Shantytown Heritage Park is a couple of minutes away, we are close to the Wilderness cycle trail, local walks and the beach. If you wish to dine out Paroa pub is a 5 minute drive from us and offers a great menu and local hospitality. Tea and coffee, sugar, milk and some toiletries are provided. This property is self catering

My husband likes trains so i booked this accommodation as a surprise. It exceeded my expectations, it was so lovely. Everything you need for 2 people, quiet location, nice hosts.
A unique stay in a quiet location with everything you could want. Exactly as described in the listing. A combination of quirky and special that would be hard to find elsewhere. Loved it.Special acknowledgement to Sarah for always having her guests needs first.
This adorable property is well worth a detour! It's so well repurposed & decorated & was so peaceful & relaxing. We wish we'd spent more days here (alas, not in our plan).
A piece of heaven nestled in native bush. Quaint refurbished rail carriage alongside a well furnished kitchen n bathroom made this a very enjoyable stay. The outside bath is an extra treat! For those wanting to get away from the hustle n bustle of life and just enjoy peace and quiet and morning birdsong, this is the place to be.
We had a delightful stay at Te Pahika, lots of thoughtful touches and lots of history about the carriage. The separate kitchen and bathroom were well resourced. Set in a bush surrounding we had tui's landing metre's from us. A lot of love has gone into this accommodation and we felt honoured to stay there.
This was perfect. Great little place alway from everything but not far from greymouth or shanty town where we had a wedding to go to.
Wish we had less on to have enjoyed the location more.

Inlaws 60th Wedding Anniversary gift. Overwhelmed with this local gem. Very nostalgic. So beautifully restored in a tranqual setting. Looking at rebooking for my train mad brother.
Wanted someplace close to Greymouth and Kumara Junction ahead of Coast to Coast. This place was lovely. Quiet, private, and comfortable. We’ll be back again!
Our 2 nights were awesome, quiet, star filled nights.
Everything we needed was there, the carriage sleeper, deckings, kitchen & bathroom were really well done.
Weka roaming around was a bonus.
Would definitely stay there again.
Very happy with our stay at Train Marsden. Very unique accommodation in picturesque setting. Great hosts. Will be recommending it to our family & friends.
Unique and excellent accommodation experience. This converted Railway carriage was visionary and a very well-executed labour of love. Everyone who stays here loves it.
We ran a B&B for 10 years. We travel almost exclusively to B&B's. This is probably the most unique, best equipped B&B we have ever been in. We are somewhat left of center, but if you are looking for a private, quaint, romantic setting - this is it. The hosts attention to detail is phenomenal. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect setting. On a scale from 1 to 5 - this place is a 10.
Well what can we say its fantastic. Garden just lovely. The experience was great. We will be back. Husband a train buff so he was very impressed with the set up. Lots of hard work to get it set up. Lots of lovely touches.
We really loved the Railway Carriage. It has been lovingly restored and with the additional kitchen and toilet block the accommodation was absolutely beautiful. The outside bath was a nice touch too. The kitchen has everything you want for self catering and the shower very good. The king size bed was very comfortable. We really liked the remoteness and the peace & quiet. The only negative was we would have liked to have been greeted by our host or said goodbye to upon departure, but that’s just us. A small minor improvement would have been a shelf either side of the bed for your phone or for the all important morning cup of tea. Those were just small things, but would highly recommend this accommodation, it exceeded our expectations.

Thank you for your wonderful review, we are so glad you enioyed your stay. We do appreciate all guest feedback. Unfortunately we didnt get to meet but it is our policy not to disturb our guests during their stay and to allow them to self check in/out if they wish which 90% of our guests do. We are more than happy to say hello/goodbye to all our guests if we are around but we leave the choice to them. We are really sorry that this was dissapointing for you and will look into our wording on the listing so as this is clearer for future guests.
We can see the appeal of a shelf by the bed however after much thought we decided against it as we felt it may restrict the access in and out of the bed. The magazine rack on each side of the bed is designed to hold a mobile phone in the front pocket so as you can still see the time on the phone, we do appreciate this may not work with every phone design.
Thanks again for staying at Te Pahika and we wish you all the best for the rest of your trip
So querky and Soooooo

About the host

Hi. We moved to NZ from UK in 1997. David is from New Zealand, and we met in Denmark where we lived for several years in the 80's. We have two grown up children and three grandchildren who visit often. We are family focused, we love our home and the West Coast ,but also enjoy exploring the country in our caravan ( finally upgraded from a tent) and the occasional overseas holiday. We like to grow vegetables and some fruit - although sometimes we are not that successful. We keep chickens - who provide all our fresh eggs, and some sheep who do a great job of mowing the lawns in our back paddocks and usually enjoy a visit, especially if you have a handful of sheep pellets. We are keen DIY'ers who love to up-cycle, and re purpose - We look forward to welcoming you to our place.
Why they chose this property
Te Pahika was built on 1907 and crashed at Moana in 1963 - the brakes were not put on when it was uncoupled and 30 carriages and the guards van all ran away (hence the name) We relocated it here in 2012 and in 2017 we undertook a total renovation which included the addition of the "station " and "platform" which now house the modern kitchen and bathroom. Te Pahika is a truly unique property that offers total peace and quiet where you can enjoy listening to the birds and other wildlife - and the odd sheep and chicken
What makes this property unique
You will be staying in a unique, historic accommodation. 15 minutes drive North to Greymouth and 20 minutes drive South to Hokitka., perfectly located for exploring the West Coast. Our place is a semi rural location , Te Pahika is surrounded by native bush, nestled at the end of a pond secluded in the middle of our 4 acre property. If you are looking for somewhere close to town but peaceful and private where you can listen to the sound of bird song and nature, enjoy star gazing and the outdoor bath you will not be disappointed.
