About this property
Number Forty Two – where comfort, character, and the meaning of life all come together.
Number Forty Two.
According to Douglas Adams the author of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the number forty two is the meaning of life, the universe and everything.
Awake in the white cloud of a queen bed between warm rammed earth walls with an intimate view of the secluded bush garden. Take breakfast on the sun-drenched side terrace with the smell of bacon and eggs flowing from the fully fitted kitchen. Stroll into town only a street away and peruse the shops and pass the time with a coffee watching the world go by. Wander home in a couple of minutes for a lunch on the back deck with cold meats from the butchers and fresh bread from the veggie shop or bakery. Play with your dog along the creek in the park behind the house. Take an afternoon walk or ride down the adjacent rail trail and past the public pool. If you are feeling adventurous ride to the mountain bike park or all the way down the Epic Trail to Yackanadah and back. A quick change, then out to one of the amazing restaurants, pubs, wine bars or the brewery for dinner. Walk home full and contented to settle into the lounge for a read with the kids playing a game on their huge twin beds in their adjacent room. Finally, a long hot shower or bath and off back into the cloud of a bed…. Life, the universe, and everything.
I am an architect and in 2000 designed and built this intimate rammed earth house with a curving roof and lots of windows for my mum who would come from England every year until she was 94. Like her, Number Forty Two is forever young. It was perfect for her and would be perfect now for an individual, couple or family of four. The recently refurbished house has two bedrooms, with one queen bed and two king sized singles. The kitchen has all you need to cook including an integrated convection oven and microwave, a pod coffee machine and dishwasher for your convenience. The dining space seats four or even six if you have guests and flows onto the side terrace with a café table for two. The living space has a three-seat lounge and a single armchair with a great view out over the outdoor setting on the deck to the green tree filled garden. The bathroom has a bath with an over bath shower, toilet, vanity, hair dryer and washing machine and plenty of hot water. Pets are welcome with a one off fee. There is even an architect designed, and well loved, outside dog kennel with bed.
Please be mindful the the house steps down with the slope of the land so there is a “bridge” at the front door. Steps down into the house and two sets of steps in the house. Likewise, there is a car spot with a short steep gravel driveway or there is plenty of free parking on the street.
So, if you are an individual, couple or family coming for the night, the weekend, or the week then this is the place for you. Compact but expansive, bright but cosy, close to town but seemingly away from everything. A home away from home or a stop along the way, Number Forty Two is simply life, the universe and everything.
Please note: there is a one off pet fee if you are staying with pets

We stayed here while showing friends from Brisbane around North East Victoria, and it couldn’t have been a better base for exploring Beechworth. Even as locals, we hadn’t really done the full “tourist experience” before and this stay made it special. The house itself is beautifully designed, with so much thoughtful detail throughout. It felt both stylish and comfortable, and everything was spotlessly clean. The amenities were exactly what you’d hope for—everything we needed (and wanted) was there.A fantastic place to stay, we’d happily return.

Adam thank you for such a beautiful review. We are very grateful and I know the owner will be too as he does the cleaning! So glad you had a wonderful time - especially as you are locals! all the very best. Jen
Fantastic property, located in ideal spot for walking to town, going on walks and within a very short drive of what we wanted to do. The property was very clean and had everything required if you wanted to stay in. The rear yard and the decking areas made it feel like you were isolated.
We loved our stay at Number Forty Two. The garden was beautiful with lots of native birds. We loved sitting out on the deck when the weather was sunny and looking out the floor to ceiling windows when it was raining - it was so serene. Our dog loved exploring the garden. The house was so close to the town, which we walked into all the time (2 min walk). There were also a lot of cafes, wine bars and restaurants/brewery to eat outside so we could take our dog with us everywhere we went.
This property was ideal for our needs. It was well presented, with everything we needed for a comfortable winter break. Great heating, a warm comfortable bed and a well equipped kitchen. We had our dog traveling with us who loved the large enclosed garden. The location of this lovely home is brilliant and meant we could walk to do many places we wanted to see. We recommend Number42 when staying in Beechworth.

We are so glad you loved Number Forty Two as much as us Margaret! Safe travels and we hope to have you back one day.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Number Forty Two. The architecturally designed house is terrific - rammed earth walls, timber ceilings and beams, sculptured metal supports. The kitchen is well equipped with lots of crockery and utensils. The air conditioning was greatly appreciated due to the very hot weather that Beechworth experienced during our stay. The bush setting is also lovely with views from just about every window in the house.A few suggestions : There is no free to air TV available in the Beechworth area at present due to the broadcasting equipment on Mt Alexander being damaged by the bushfires. Apparently, it might take several months for repairs to be made. As a result, communication during bush fire or storm events is compromised. Guests at the house can access various internet streaming services on apps. However, this requires a computer, iPad or similar. In the absence of those devices, perhaps a radio should be provided as a key item in the house. The doona on the Queen bed in the main bedroom is good. However, in the hot weather it is too much and a light cotton blanket would be greatly appreciated.Considerable thought and effort has gone into the bush garden around the house. However, over time there has been a lot of leaves dropped. As part of the driveway is quite steep, the leaves can be slippery. It would be good if they could be raked and removed.
