About this property
The Happy Shack Hawley Beach
Our little slice of heaven just steps from pristine Hawley Beach. Relax on the back deck with the BBQ fired up, take a swim, launch your boat at the street end for some fishing, or cozy up by the fire with wine or whisky in cooler months.
This breezy 60s-style shack blends retro charm with modern comforts. Stroll to the beach, breathe in the salty air, and discover great coffee, wine, and food just five minutes away.
Our happy place by the sea is perfect for slowing down, switching off, and soaking up the coastal vibes.
Inside, you’ll find two spacious queen bedrooms; the main opens onto the back deck and includes a small walk-in robe, a little office nook, and its own private entry, while the second has a built-in robe for storage, along with the iron, ironing board, and a few cosy extras like spare blankets.
The open living space is made for relaxing, with a fireplace to keep things toasty in the cooler months, two separate study nooks if you need a quiet moment, and a well-equipped kitchen for cooking up something simple after the beach.
Slide open the door to the back deck and you will find comfy outdoor furniture for kicking back with a drink, a big yard for the kids to run around in, and even a private infrared sauna downstairs that you’re welcome to use for a small daily fee.
We hope you love The Happy Shack as much as we do — it’s relaxed, roomy, and full of good energy, perfect for beach days, board games, and everything in between.
Guests have full access to the entire property during their stay, including all indoor and outdoor spaces. Please note the downstairs room is locked, but access will be provided if you wish to use the sauna. Feel free to make yourselves at home and enjoy all the amenities available.
We`re mostly around, but happy to leave you to enjoy what you came for. Please contact us if you have any issues whatsoever, or just want some local tips.
Hawley Beach and surrounds are the ideal escape for any time of the year. With it`s picturesque sandy beaches and pristine waters for swimming, fishing, a spot of surfing, or taking the kids fossicking out to the Island at low tide, Hawley has something for everyone.
Within one minute`s drive is the boat ramp (4wd needed!), there`s a local surf club and markets open on a Friday night during the summer months, offering local food, produce, music and entertainment.
All within a three-minute drive of Hawley you`ll find Woolworths, Amcal Pharmacy, BWS, United fuel station, IGA Supermarket, Shearwater Food Co and the Shearwater Tavern. In addition there`s a selection of fine cafes - The Workshop, Muse, Brewstone and Trend Shed are all close by and ready to keep you caffeinated!
You`ll find Hawley is quiet and friendly, most will say hi on their morning walks and you`ll see some of our senior citizens (or polar bears) going for their early dip all-year-round.
There`s a bus service that will take you into Devonport (Merseylink), otherwise with enough notice there`s Devonport Taxi`s on 131008. Sadly there`s no Uber service as yet in the local area, bear in mind Hawley is a quiet place...the reason you`ve gotten away from the hustle & bustle to begin with!
PLEASE be careful when walking underneath the house out the back, there`s a low steel beam which is very easy to bump into, especially during the dark. We`ve wrapped it in a thin layer of foam and caution tape, however one can still give it a good whack if not careful. **Please note if your booking is via VRBO/Stayz, the 3% credit card fee attached to the booking will not be refunded if the reservation is cancelled.**

The House was Spotless, and very comfortable. We felt right at home from the minute we walked in.The Hosts were easy to communicate with and very responsive to any questions asked. We would definately recommend a stay here (especially for Beach lovers) and will be coming back in the future for Sure!!!
Ben was very welcoming and accomodating. The house was great and very comfortable, particularly the rear deck. Had great sleeps in the very comfortable beds. We loved the beaches.
My Family and I had a lovely time during our stay at the Happy Shack Hawley Beach. On arrival we opened the door to a beautiful clean home with a welcoming bottle of wine and tasty treat. Our girls (2 & 4 years) happily made themselves at home and loved playing on the beautiful spacious deck and the in garden. Our little dog loved the sunny spots on the deck to as well as the safe yard. The shack was close enough walk to lovely family beach and a short drive to a dog beach. If our girls were older we would have also been able to all walk to the dog beach too. We all had such a good time it was sad for the girls to say goodbye to the Happy Shack when we left.

Host - It was Not easy to get hold of the host . The siding glass door didn’t work we didn’t hear back from the host for days. I think it was about three or four days before someone came to fix the door . This made it very inconvenient to use the patio. We also wanted to use the sauna but never heard back how to use it . It was pretty cold since it was winter. It would’ve been nice to use the sauna. There was no dryer being winter. It took a long time for your clothes to dry. I rented the house for 13 days so I didn’t need to wash clothes while I was there. It would’ve been nice to have a dryer to dry your clothing.Kitchen - the kitchen could’ve used more small pans they only had very large pans, and the handles were about to fall off. It would’ve been nice to have smaller pans to cook just an egg or something small. There was also water damage on the wood in the kitchen. It was covered up by towels. We discovered it later. You could tell the water damage was old and it was just covered up in the kitchen.Clean rooms - I would say the house was for all pretty clean, but there were bugs in one of the rooms closets. I put my clothes up there and gifts that I had bought not knowing that there was probably about 20 to 30 dead bugs up there. It was pretty gross knowing that I had my clothes up on the top shelf and gifts for other people.I think the location was great. I did like the fact that the house had wood for you to use. The size of the house was also very nice.

Response from VrboOwner on 31 Aug 2026
Thank you for your review. We are disappointed by several of the comments, particularly as we were not given a reasonable opportunity to address them during your stay.
The phone number provided with the booking was an overseas number we were unable to contact, and our messages through the booking platform went unanswered. We also left our direct contact details at the property. Detailed sauna instructions were sent through the platform and we offered complimentary use of the sauna as a goodwill gesture, but unfortunately did not receive a response.
Regarding the patio door, there was a second door providing access to the patio from the bedroom, so the area remained accessible while the other door was being attended to.
We are surprised by the comments regarding maintenance, kitchen items and cleanliness, as none of these concerns were raised during your 13-night stay. Had we been made aware of them, we would have acted promptly.
We take guest service, cleanliness and maintenance seriously and do not believe this review reflects the experience most guests have at The Happy Shack. We encourage future guests to consider our many positive reviews across our other booking platforms, which provide a more balanced representation of the standards we consistently deliver.
