About Rob & Cat Preston
We bought the house as a primary residence in 1989 and renovated and added on throughout the years. When moving to Washington State in 2006 we were not ready to sell our house and decided to turn it into a vacation rental so that we could continue updating it and give others a chance to enjoy it as well. Our ties to Marquette remain strong and we love visiting with friends and family as often as we can. It's hard to leave and it's great to come back! As we enter into the ninth year of sharing our home with wonderful folks, we are happy to know that people are returning to celebrate weddings, reunions, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and more. Keep enjoying the house and the Marquette area! We have now returned to the Midwest (Wisconsin) and are so happy to be back and closer to friends, family and our house! We hope you continue to enjoy Cliffs Ridge as we do.

Why Rob & Cat Preston chose Marquette
The Marquette area offers an enormous range of activities, indoor and out. Boating, fishing, biking, hiking, skiing, great restaurants and shopping— the possibilities are absolutely endless. It is a welcoming and warm community with the added benefit of magnificent Lake Superior which in itself can entertain the entire family. Cliffs Ridge's central location allows you to be anywhere in the area in minutes -- the best of all worlds. Marquette is central to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (Munising, 40 miles east) and Big Bay, (20 minutes north and home of the historic 'Anatomy of a Murder' location. Houghton/Hancock (home of Michigan Technological University) is about two hours north along with Copper Harbor and Isle Royale. Day trip possibilities abound from Cliffs Ridge!
What makes this House unique
We love to have friends over to enjoy the 2nd-story deck, the wood-burning fireplace and gathering table in the dining area — when you sit at that table you feel as though you are living in a tree house! There is also a wonderful new fire pit in the backyard. This fall we took down more than nine trees and enlarged the back area including RV parking and entertainment area, including new lawn. The highway in front can be a little noisy during the day; traffic slows down at night. We are focusing the outdoor living area toward the back of the house for this reason. Nothing compares to fresh Lake Superior trout or whitefish on the grill—get it from Thill's Fish House and you are guaranteed that it is fresh and wonderful!

Super family friendly place!
My family stayed at Cliff's Ridge for a long weekend to celebrate a birthday. The house was extremely clean, was a perfect set up for little ones & furry ones, and we really loved the well-equipped kitchen. We all had an awesome time and Cat was incredible to work with. We are already planning our next stay!
So glad you had such a great time, Jenn! We love the fact that so many other families are able to call Cliffs Ridge their home-away-from-home. Looking forward to seeing you again.
Only 1 Private Room for Couples
A relative booked this for our group of 3 couples. Though the house is old, it has been fixed up attractively. Nevertheless, it would be much more suitable for a guys weekend than for our group. There's one very nice master suite with a private full bath in a newer wing. The other two rooms with queen beds lack privacy. The two are connected by French doors. One has no real bedroom door, just a louvered closet door from the hallway. The laundry room and main bathroom can be accessed only by walking through this bedroom. This means the couple in the third bedroom have to go up the stairs (which creak loudly) for any middle-of-the-night bathroom trips. (The third toilet is a half bath off the great room upstairs.) Incidentally, the washer and dryer are located in a very musty unfinished basement. The musty odor is somewhat noticeable in the 2nd bedroom. The two older bathrooms have old fixtures (toilets that fill very slowly and a shower with hard-to-regulate water temperature.) Despite these draw backs, the property has some good features--plenty of space and a great location. It just was less than ideal for our group, and seems overpriced, especially if privacy is a priority.
Thank you so much for taking the time to review Cliffs Ridge. Not sure who K is, but he or she is not a person we ever dealt with during the rental process. An actual name would lend more credibility to any review.
The title is incredibly misleading. There are three completely private bedrooms and the fourth that is attached to the second full bath is about to get a solid door, even though it has an overabundance of doors which is why that one was removed when it was my art studio.
In nine years and almost 50 5-star reviews, we have never had a two-star review. We also never had to spend as much time on the phone with a renter trying to undo the cluster that he had made of the TV/Cable boxes while thinking that he was dealing with a satellite system instead of Charter/Spectrum. During this phone call he repeatedly said that the house was great and that everything else was perfect. We finally had to give him some personal information so that he could call Charter directly.
The two bedrooms are made completely private by French doors with full privacy blinds. The room without the bath has its own door to the hallway; the other one connected to the full bath is about to have a separate door to the hallway as well instead of the louvered doors that a long-term renter added, as stated above.
All of the Cliffs Ridge literature and house information state to contact us immediately if there is anything that a guest is not happy with. The wife of the person who actually booked the house called a couple of days after looking for her makeup bag; she did not mention any issues either. It seems inappropriate for someone to ignore that and blind-side with a bad review.
Over the last few months we have made many extra updates to the house and more are coming in the immediate future, including updating the basement area. We have literally invested tens of thousands of dollars into this property over the last nine years alone.
Our long-standing history of happy new and repeat guests speaks for itself. We hope you had a great time in the area.
Great rental near Marquette!
I had a family member getting married in Marquette, and most of our family is from downstate in the Lansing/Flint area. We were looking into hotels and were shocked by some of the prices. We also wanted to spend time together as a family while in Marquette. I found Cliff's Ridge and we booked it. It was my wife and I, and two of my cousins and their husbands. We had six people and all slept quite comfortably. There were three queen bedrooms, and had another room with twin size bunk beds. There were also a couple of futons that could have been used. Since I found the place, my family gave us the master bedroom which had its own full bathroom, private deck outdoors, sky lights, and a living space in our room. It was very nice.
The owners were great with directions on how to find the place, and were great at communication throughout the process. After arrival I had phone numbers for both the owner and caretakers in case of emergencies and received emails from both making sure we had all we needed. The weekend we were in Marquette was the first rainy weekend of this long hot summer I think, so some of our outdoor plans had to be cancelled. We, as well as many of my other family members had booked the Pictured Rocks boat tour but it was cancelled due to weather. While they were checking in with me to make sure we were taken care of, the owner also made suggestions on other activities we could do in the area, since our plans had changed. They were great and very helpful!
The house has a reverse setup, with the 4 bedrooms on the first floor near the entrance. Their is a stairwell leading up to a spacious gathering area and kitchen upstairs where we spent most of our time. We had access to a well stocked full kitchen and refrigerator with all of the appliances we needed. There is a large table that seats 8 and another smaller table that can seat 3 or 4. The night before the wedding, we had some of our other cousins over for dinner (I grilled bacon burgers on the provided gas grill, which was very nice). We had about 11 people in the upstairs area comfortably while we had dinner, played cards, and had a good time. There is also a large flat screen tv with a good cable package which included FSD to watch the Tigers. The very nice couch features footrests, and there is a recliner also.
All of this about 10 mins from Marquette. Far enough away to not be downtown but close enough to be near everything. We couldn't have been happier!! 5 stars!
We are so happy that the house worked out so well for you and your family. Thank you, as well, for your patience with our driveway construction.
Too bad you didn't get to do the Pictured Rocks cruise, but the Marquette area offers so many outdoor and indoor activities that I am sure there were quite a few things you found to do. So glad you took advantage of the outdoor decks and grilling area, as well. We just love having others fully enjoy our home.
Welcome to the Cliffs Ridge Family, Matt!

Great Place for Ski Weekend
Spacious home located a mile away from Marquette Mountain. This was our 2nd stay at this home this ski season. Price is great. Beds are comfortable. Home is clean, kitchen has everything you need. Having laundry makes it really easy if you don't want to have to pack a lot. Such a QUICK jaunt over to beautiful Marquette Mountain. 5 minutes to downtown...very convenient location. Great place to stay!!
Hi Jen, so glad your stays were wonderful. Yes, our place is the closest accommodation to Marquette Mountain and is also very close to Blueberry Ridge just south of the Crossroads. Thank you for enjoying our house and treating it as your own. We love our repeat customers! Have a great rest of the year! Cat and Rob
Perfect for ski weekend!
Stayed at Cliff's Ridge with a group of friends for a ski trip weekend. The house is only a few minutes from Marquette Mountain. The house was nice and cozy. We loved having a full kitchen so we didn't have to bring dishes and utensils. There is chopped firewood so we could warm up after a long day on the slopes! The house was clean when we arrived and we'll definitely be staying again in the future!
Thank you so much for choosing Cliffs Ridge for your Marquette stay. Welcome to the ever-enlarging Cliffs Ridge family! We miss that fireplace so much and are glad that others can enjoy it. Have a wonderful new year!
Perfect vacation home
My family from Wisconsin stayed at Cliff's Ridge for my wedding in Marquette. The place was beautiful and really gives off the "I'm on vacation" feel. Very spacious and well accommodating for my large family. The closest and largest rental we found near Marquette Mountain where we held our wedding reception. Short drive to downtown but offers the privacy of being out of the city. The owners are great to work with. We would definitely stay here again.
So happy to be a positive part of your wedding, Michelle! Thank you for choosing Cliffs Ridge for your stay.
Minutes from Lake Superior with miles of gorgeous sand beach; minutes from Marquette with great shopping and restaurants; Northern Michigan University functions; seconds from one of the best ski hills in the Midwest and XC ski trails; M-553 connects to all of the surrounding bike paths and trails; mountain biking and climbing on the dirt road immediately north of the house. This is a great gathering house for bridal functions and family reunions.
