Perfect tropical wonderland
This place was a great place to stay on the less busy part of the island that is close to an awesome fine black sand beach to hike to as well as wonderful restaurants and stores to enjoy and stock up for a relaxing visit.
All the communication leading up to and during was incredibly fast and helpful. Responses happened within a few minutes every time!
The property was large and the unit we stayed in was much bigger than we needed as a family of 4. But, we loved the extra space. My 9 and 12 year olds loved climbing in the gigantic banyan tree that was about 30 feet from the spacious back deck. While not ocean front, we were only about 2-300 yards from the coast and could see the water from the upstairs deck. The only noises we heard where from the frogs, trees and lovely creaking bamboo. Even though this place is a duplex, there are no shared walls since the well-stocked laundry room and inner lounge separates the two units.
The kitchen was large and well stocked with extra spices and condiments. We loved taking showers in the outdoor shower! The ocean toys were plentiful so we didn't need to buy anything to boogie board and enjoy the beaches.
We even ran into the one of the relatives who helped build the place and he gave us some good advice about beaches and restaurants.
We will strongly consider staying there again and perhaps renting the entire property for a larger family visit.
The good: big home, would be great for families. Beautiful kitchen, and wood accents. Close to Kapaau and Hawi....cute shops and good restaurants. Could hear waves crashing each morning. Bird, frog and cow serenades each night. Rooster wake up calls each morning. Kitchen well equipped and appreciated the cooler and other items for beach. Had problem with TV but Samantha was quick to try to fix it. Large lanai’s to enjoy cool evenings. Beautiful flowers and foliage. The bad: to use lanai’s, you would have to clean them and shake out furniture cushions. Needs deep cleaning inside as well. Many light bulbs inside and outside burnt out. Light fixtures and ceiling fans extremely dirty, wires sticking put of walls. There is no TV but Roku. Could get Netflix or Hulu but the WiFi signal is so weak, nothing would stream over 5 minutes. There was not a 2nd TV as stated online. We looked and looked for fruit trees on the property but found none, as stated online. Overall enjoyed our stay but it could really be nice with some attention. If you book both the Bamboo Suite and Banyan House for family...it would be really convenient. But as we only rented the Banyan House, there were other renters in the Bamboo Suite...right next door. It did not have the privacy we expected.
Loved the stay here. Great communication with the property manager, who even treated us with fresh fruits and avocados. Met the owners as well-- very friendly people.
Very Hawai'ian experience. It is in the jungle, so bring your bug spray. Not on the beach, but you can hear the waves crashing against the cliffs.
Would definitely come back.
The woodwork in the house is incredible. Ask Mike about what he did to put it all together and you'll be amazed. Mike built the compound in 6 years, and if you have built anything in your lifetime you'll understand the effort. Mahalo
What a calming, relaxing vacation, lots of privacy in this beautiful handcrafted unique home.
The woodwork was such a nice surprise, eloquently beautiful. Lots of cookware and utensils to cook with using the large island. The large porch was peaceful during dinners and having coffee in the early morning listening to the frogs. Close to the beach, close to many hiking trails that take your breath away. The owners were very accommodating. The close town about 2-5 miles away had a lot of fine crafted artwork, good restaurants also. Fresh and clean in this spacious home.
The Big Island's North Kohala district is the discriminating travelers' best-kept secret. Experience 'Old Hawaii' in the charming historic towns of Hawi and Kapaau, with artists' shops, galleries, and delightful cafes. Historic sites - the famous statue of King Kamehameha, state parks, tropical gardens, Pololu Valley - with its majestic views, black sand beach, and scenic hiking trails. Or kick back, and enjoy some of the island's best beaches. Whale watching is seasonal (December through April), but the sea turtle sightings occur year-round.
