About this property

Charming 1917 Craftsman Bungalow - Full Garden & Hot Tub, 6 blocks to Downtown

Welcome to the Painted Pony Bungalow. Take a step back in time in this century old bungalow secluded from the street by a giant oak tree. With two bedrooms and one bath, it accommodates three long term guests in comfort. The master bedroom with the queen bed, has a newly installed air conditioner (window style) that states it cools up to 400 plus sq. feet. The dining table is set for four people but can easily expand to serve six guests. Dog friendly, please inquire.

Our bungalow is located on a quiet, three block long street in the Bungalow Haven neighborhood that includes a large number of intact Craftsman-era bungalows in a four block square area. It's only six blocks from State Street, close enough for an easy walk and far enough to escape traffic and noise. We are twelve to fourteen blocks from the beach.

At State Street you'll find the Museum of Art and the newly rebuilt Granada Theater. The Santa Barbara County Bowl is three blocks away. The beach is two miles by car or bicycle. It’s only a mile to Santa Barbara Mission and Rose Garden.

Painted Pony Bungalow features these amenities:

Charming kitchen with original cabinetry, and a 50’s era Wedgewood stove, microwave, bright red corner booth, a microwave, a coffee maker & grinder, with a washer & dryer tucked away in a cabinet. The kitchen has a new kitchen sink with a drinking water filtration fully installed, and generously equipped with pots and pans, utensils and tableware for the inspired cook.

A new sliding glass door opens to the backyard garden and deck with a patio table for outdoor dining, complete with a natural gas barbecue, and a nicely tucked away private hot tub/spa that seats six.

The relaxed garden filled backyard is fully enclosed and dog-friendly. The patio table is there for your morning cuppa, and for easy entertaining. There is also power source in case you'd to take your laptop out on the back patio for a change of work space & some fresh air.

Regarding access and mobility preferences, as you can see from the photos of the front of the house, there are five steps up the front porch from the front yard walkway. From the backyard there is one step from the back deck through the sliding door to enter via the kitchen. The interior of the bungalow is all on one level. It is not , however, wheelchair friendly. Your off street parking spot is located in a small back lot, with easy access to the front door or back yard.

VRBO Pet fees are for each pet by the month. Longer stays can be discussed.

High-tech goodies include broadband Wi-Fi, 40” HDTV with Cable. The living and dining rooms feature early 20th century cabinetry and trim, oak floors and a gas fireplace.

The master bedroom has a queen bed with a new window mounted air conditioner, the front bedroom has a full size bed. Both beds have memory foam toppers, and are extremely comfortable. Both bedrooms have shades and /or curtains for a good nights sleep. Fresh cotton bed linens and towels are provided. The Jack & Jill bathroom has a low-flow toilet, refinished full size tub and shower tub, and vanity located between the two bedrooms.

About the host

We are Eric Kelley and Peggy Lindt. Eric is the owner of The Book Den; founded in 1902, it is among California's oldest book stores. Peggy is an artist, medical illustrator, dog portraits and designer. Her art work has been used in postcards, calendars, books, and several Old Spanish Days Fiesta posters. Peggy grew up in Santa Barbara. Eric came to town when he bought The Book Den in 1979.

Why they chose this property

We bought this house for ourselves to live in. When Peggy's mother needed more assistance, we moved across town to help, and thought we'd rather rent the bungalow furnished as a vacation rental than have to store all of our furniture. We've always loved the eastside location. It's in Santa Barbara's Bungalow Haven neighborhood, so the whole area is full of nicely maintained bungalows. It's easy walking distance to downtown; Eric and our dog Django often walked to work together. If you stay at Painted Pony Bungalow, you'll get a real feel for old-fashioned Santa Barbara living.

What makes this property unique

Staying in Painted Pony Bungalow gives all the old-fashioned comfort of a craftsman bungalow built in 1917, with lovely woodwork and built-in cabinetry, and vintage kitchen and oak floors. But you don't have to leave 21st century conveniences behind. There's a hot tub, HD television and wi-fi Internet, and a new window style AC (air conditioner) in the master bedroom, and filtered drinking water. It's the best combination of the old and the new.

Over the years since 2009, we've often had repeat guests that are remote working or on a working vacation for a season. The WIFI and quality computer access has always been a top priority. We are more than happy to accommodate their needs.
