About this property

Historic 1850s Home at the Base of Jump Mountain

Nestled at the foot of Rockbridge County's landmark Jump Mountain only 14 miles from historic Lexington, this charming, comfy 1857 family farmhouse is ideal for those seeking both tranquillity and a base from which to explore the numerous tourism attractions of the region. It also provides insight into the heritage of the Scots-Irish Walker family who first settled here in 1735 – their current sixth generation descendants proudly display a deed signed by Thomas Jefferson when governor of Virginia.

As Walkerlands offers four spacious bedrooms – one on the ground floor with an en suite shower and nearby bathroom, the other three plus a full bathroom on the floor above – as well as a sitting room, family room, dining room and fully-equipped, eat-in kitchen it is ideal for families or groups of friends. And then there are the outdoor amenities of this 550-acre farm combining woodland and pastureland: two porches with comfortable seating and hammocks, a brick patio complete with a umbrella-shaded picnic table and chairs, splendid views of the Appalachian mountains and green pastures filled with grazing cattle plus a quiet country road, dead-ending in a beautiful woodland at one end and leading at the other end to Walker-s Creek overlooked by the picturesque log cabin Walkerlands' owner author and travel writer Mary Moore Mason restored several years ago.

HOUSE RULES
1. Check-in is 3pm-8pm; If you unexpectedly find that you will arrive outside the check-in window, we can most likely accommodate you if you contact us to make the necessary arrangements ahead of time. Check-out time is 3pm.

2. Although the house sleeps up to 14 persons, each guest over 10 persons is $25 per person per night. It is the guest's responsibility to notify us of the number of persons sleeping in the house if that number changes. Please note: The ‘Guest service fee’ that is charged to guests is the fee that Airbnb collects for the use of its platform. This is NOT a Walkerlands fee.

3. This house does NOT permit parties or large gatherings. Only registered guests (meaning guests sleeping at the property and who are a part of the number count; not to exceed 14 persons) are allowed on the property during the duration of the guests' stay.

4. DO NOT put grease or vegetable oils in the sinks or toilets. Put all grease and vegetable oils in a jar and leave it on the counter to be disposed of by housekeeping.

5. The house is very well stocked. However, we value the planet and seek to live in conscious relationship with her by practicing sustainability in any way that we can. Therefore, we intentionally limit our use of one-time consumables. While the house comes with cloth options for napkins, dish towels, and table cloths, we only provide a starter pack of consumables- one roll of paper towels, eight rolls of toilet paper, two 8 gallon trash bags per day of stay, and one box of tissues. If you think you will use more than that over the course of your stay, we recommend that you bring extra.

6. DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products, diapers, wipes or paper towels down the toilets. Because we have a septic tank, only toilet paper should be flushed down the toilets. Small white trash cans are provided for disposal of anything that is not toilet paper.

7. NO SMOKING in the house. A VIOLATION of this House Rule constitutes an ADDITIONAL CLEANING FEE of $100 claimed via your Airbnb account. Smoking is permitted outside. Ashtray pots are provided on the porches for cigarette disposal.

8. NO oil-based lubricants or massage oils allowed on sheets, duvets or towels. If you permanently stain the sheets/duvets/towels and a $50 REPLACEMENT FEE will be claimed via your Airbnb Account.

9. DO NOT put beverages directly on wood surfaces! Use drink coasters provided throughout the house.

10. DO NOT leave wet towels on wood furniture or wood floors.

11. CHILDREN MUST HAVE ADULT SUPERVISION AT ALL TIMES. No exceptions. Due to the proximity of the house to the road, cattle, and stairs, it is MANDATORY that parents watch children at ALL times to ensure their safety.

12. The entire house and property are available for access EXCEPT for two locked rooms on the first floor and one room on the second floor.

13. ALL ACCIDENTS including but not limited to personal hygiene, injuries, slips, falls, spills and or any damage or breakage MUST be brought to our attention before check out.

14. Rinse dishes thoroughly before putting them in the dishwasher.

15. Our space is located in the countryside. Though we treat the exterior to keep out pests including insects and mice, this is a reality of nature. Our space may not be a fit for those who are extremely phobic of these and other wildlife.

16. Any issues with the property must be brought to the owner's attention within the first 24 hours of your stay.

About Wendy Lynch Redfern, manager of Texas, Florida, and Virginia properties: I am a children's librarian in Virginia and lived for six years at our Walkerlands residence with my husband, Mark and daughter, Rose. The matriarchs of both of our families have wonderful places to visit, relax, and explore. Whether its the beach you want, or open rolling hills brewing with history, or the hill country of Texas, we just may have exactly what your looking for.

About Pat Lynch, owner of the Cocoa Beach, FL and Wimberley, TX properties: Greetings! I am a retired real estate broker. Born and raised in Orlando, FL and I have lived in Cocoa Beach, FL for 51 years. My oldest daughter moved to Wimberley and raised her children there. Visiting often, I fell in love with Wimberley, and have spent lots of time there relaxing, spending time in nature and browsing the sweet shops. And now I'm spending more time in Virginia with my third daughter, Wendy, but I would love to share the beauty and elegance of my home while I am away.

About Mary Moore Mason, owner of Walkerlands: Greetings! I am a travel writer/editor who divides my time between this charming, comfy 1857 home, resided in and beloved by six generations of my family who first settled on the surrounding land in 1735, and London, England, where I am the founding and ongoing editor of Essentially America magazine and the former (and first American) chairman of the British Guild of Travel Writers. My most recent book, published in June 2021 by the UK's TSL Publications, is Goodbye Hoop Skirts - Hello World! The Travels, Triumphs and Tumbles of a Runaway Southern Belle (Website hidden by Airbnb) It includes descriptions of Walkerlands, its residents and history.
