About this property

Liberty Retreat. No cleaning Fees!

Everybody needs to get away from the daily hustle once in a while. Spend time alone or with family or friends. Spend some time relaxing, curl up with a good book or enjoy hiking, bird watching, exploring or hunting. We are located in the Appalachian Foothills of Southern Ohio. Our 70 acre property offers high rock cliffs, deep gorges, caves, waterfalls (depends on rainfall), all kinds of nature, birds and wildlife visible from two miles of clearly marked, scenic trails, available all year.

We have a totally refurbished cabin known as Caretaker’s Cottage. Updated in 2021 with cozy, comfortable features and relaxation in mind, Caretaker’s Cottage displays rustic charm with all the modern conveniences. The barn wood, used as accent walls, was repurposed from an old barn on our property.

Accommodations include two bedrooms, each with a queen bed, adjustable reading lamps, convenient outlets for phones & chargers and a full "Jack & Jill" bathroom (shower, sink, toilet). If you forget something, we keep a small supply of toiletries on hand.

The living area provides comfortable seating and is open to the nicely equipped, full kitchen with peninsula that seats four. There's also a smart tv, a ton of family friendly DVDs and a good selection of books and board games.

An ample supply of fresh, comfy linens, towels and extra blankets always on hand. All dishes, silverware, pots, pans, blender, coffee pot, coffee & filters are also provided. Our Keurig coffee maker is a dual feature machine, allowing for drip coffee or K-pods. You will need to bring your own pods.

You'll have the whole cottage to yourself. Enjoy evenings on the large, private, paver patio with fire pit and 4 chairs. The wood, fire starters and a lighter all furnished. Get up a game of Cornhole or Hookey. Cook your meals on our Blackstone grill. How about an invigorating experience in the outdoor shower. See if you can identify all the different types of birds at the feeders. Get away from the light pollution of the big city. We think you can see all of heaven from Liberty Retreat.

We are located just 38 miles from Hocking Hills Visitor Center & Old Man's Cave. We are surrounded by thirteen other State Parks and Wildlife Areas, all within 30 miles. Check out additional comments under Host "What makes our property unique" for more information, accurate mileage & things to see.

Hunters- We offer in season archery hunting on our 70 private acres, as well as easy access to the Liberty Wildlife Area with 146 acres of untamed woodland, which sits adjacent to our property. There is no additional cost to hunt at Liberty Retreat, however there are some rules to follow & a couple documents you must sign, so we will do in person check in for all hunters. For full details, send us an inquiry. We'll respond shortly.

When you book with Liberty Retreat, we do not add any additional fees. The nightly rate includes everything we offer. No cleaning fee, no linen fee, no additional guest fee or other fees that most listings impose. It's all included at Liberty Retreat.
VRBO does charge a Guest Service Fee for use of their platform. The Guest Service Fee is retained by VRBO.

We believe we have something special here at Liberty Retreat, and we love sharing it with others. We hope you will find it special too and come visit as often as you can.

Peaceful Retreat
We had a wonderful stay! We hiked around the forest property, went to hocking hills, found a few local restaurants within 30 minutes, and felt very safe here. The kitchen was fully stocked, and they even left some snacks for our hungry teenagers! The hosts were very welcoming as we drove by, and very responsive when we used the app. I would definitely recommend!!!

About the host

Hosted by Sandy Murray

Host profile image
We are Mark & Sandy Murray. Mark is a native Buckeye (useless nut). Sandy is a sweet South Carolina girl. For a long time, we desired to move to the country and live on a few acres, to enjoy all nature has to offer. Once we decided what we wanted, we diligently searched for property for about three years, maybe longer. One day, totally by chance, we drove past a For Sale sign posted near the road. 70 acres was definitely more property than we thought we could afford, but we fell in love during our first walk in the woods. We moved into the cottage in 2015. It was in much worse condition than what you see now.
Our property is located on what once was part of the White Farm. Mr. White is a descendent of group of families that moved here from Virginia in the 1800’s. Story has it, that a Virginia slave owner, named William Ragland, decided to free his slaves and had the families brought here to Ohio. He purchased an entire township of land (one square mile) and gave it to the families. White, Ragland, Carter and Fox, are a few of the family names. Descendants still own much of the land in this area. Our property surrounds the Ragland Family Cemetery. Some markers date back to the Civil War era.
Bordering our property to the northeast, is 146 acres known as the Liberty Wildlife Area. The state-owned property was a gift from the Central Ohio Hunters Club in 1956. There is no access to the wildlife area from the cemetery. Only our registered guests can easily access the wildlife area from our property.
We have traveled quite a bit throughout the lower 48 and overseas. Germany, France, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Badlands, all have stunning landscapes. While they all have their special qualities, there are few places that are as beautiful as it is right here in southern Ohio. We may seem a little bias, but we believe it is a gorgeous place to live or visit.

Why they chose this property

We love the history and the quiet peace here. We have our own personal hiking trails, and although we love our neighbors, we have to make an effort to see them. Those looking to venture out onto the trails, please bring hiking boots, walking stick, bug spray and a bottle of water. We provide a map of the trails at the cottage. We also have two walking sticks if you forget yours.
This property is in the country. You may encounter bugs, skinks, snakes, turkey, raccoons, skunks, bobcats, deer, and squirrels. You may be serenaded by coyote, fox or bears (we've never seen a bear up close). Should you encounter any of the above, do not try to pet, catch, hit, hug, etc. as it could cause bodily harm. Our black cat, Wednesday may visit. She is safe to pet. We have a white skunk in our upper pasture that a guest thought was a cat. It is NOT a cat. Don't invite creatures into the house, leave food out for them, etc. We do fill the bird feeders just prior to your arrival to make sure you have lots of visitors. Enjoy nature at it's best! We love it here and you will too!!!

What makes this property unique

Located in Southern Ohio, we are close to many area attractions. Those coming for extended stays are close to not only our local Amish culture and attractions but also within a reasonable drive for day trips to several larger cities (Chillicothe, Cincinnati, Columbus, Athens, Ashland and Huntington). Those coming for shorter stays find they wish they had stayed just one more day. Many never venture out and choose to spend their entire visit here!
