About this property

Enjoy an incredible view while perched above the water

This cottage was built by our grandfather in 1955. It is called Overbank because it is nestled in some trees at the very top of a bank with a 180 degree view of beautiful Lake George. It has a 24’ long screened in porch with dining table for six which looks directly down on the water. The window in the bedroom opens onto the porch so you can hear the lapping of waves below you as you go to sleep in a comfy queen sized bed.

Overbank takes me back
We have stayed at Overbank before and hope to come again simply for the feeling I get there. This simple rustic cottage right by the water takes me back to childhood vacations at Lake George. There’s nothing like the sound of the water lapping, the scent of the pine trees and the sounds of the loons and other birds. Add some warm homemade muffins and hot coffee on the porch and I’m in my happy place!

On the Lake
Our second stay on Siler Bay, Lake George, New York. Overbank Cabin is relaxing and quiet. This area is the perfect getaway! We loved the boating and fishing. Evenings on the lake are enjoyable with the beautiful sky and sounds of the loon.

About the host

My Grandfather purchased the property in 1939 and built a little log cabin for his family. He named it Demilog for its construction of half logs. It is still with us and can be seen/rented on VRBO #263457. In 1955 he boldly built this cabin called Overbank because it hangs over the water 90 feet in front of Demilog.. He and Grandma lived in this one from May to October each year. As the years went by my Grandfather passed and then my Grandma passed the property down to her children. My mom ended up buying out her brothers when they wanted to moved on. We named it Oxford Cottages (Oxford was her married name) after her because we were so grateful that she didn't sell out with them. My mom passed suddenly in 2009 from a heart attack which threw my brother and I into ownership and I took over the booking and started showing it on VRBO. After nine years, my brother wanted to move on, so I bought him out in 2017. My husband Fred and I are now the sole owners.

I was raised in Middlebury, Vermont but have lived the last 40 years in Maryland just north of DC. I went to DC as a young single to be trained as a Sign Language Interpreter at Gallaudet University. I found I loved working in Educational Interpreting and have worked the last 31 years at Montgomery College. I met my husband Fred right after college and we settled down to raise a family. He worked for 40 years in IT in the school system. He just retired September 30, 2020. We have 3 wonderful children Jason, Kristin and Jesse and 3 remarkable grandchildren all of which I hope will be future owners of Oxford Cottages!

Why they chose this property

In an increasingly tense and stressful world, there is a need to unplug and bask in the beauty of this incredible planet....to just sit and watch a sunrise, while you listen to the loons calls, or watch the duck families swim by. Watch the clouds change color and roll by, listen to the waves lapping on the shore like they have for eons... let all your tension roll out of your body and into the water...just relax. This property gives you a place to do that. Grab a kayak and head out early in the morning and pretend you are the first Indian to ever see this incredible lake with its crystal clear water.. The other side of the lake which is a mile away is totally undeveloped in our section. Stop at sweet little O'Dell Island on the way and walk its paths.. Sit there for a bit and just be still. Enjoy looking at the windswept trees and all the wild plants that have survived yet another winter. Introduce your children to seeing the world like this. The wonder of it all. Then go back and swim all day and then build a camp fire and be mesmerized by the flames. Eat and cook simple. You will feel so refreshed after a few days of this.

What makes this property unique

Our section of Lake George is quiet and peaceful. We are a single line of old cottages along the shore at the base of a mountain. The other side of the lake is totally undeveloped and consists of a steep mountain that goes into the lake. You can kayak for miles along an undeveloped shore line. There are not many places that can claim that.
We also have the campus of the beautiful Silver Bay Association half a mile up the road. It has many beautiful examples of Adirondack architecture. It also offers a myriad of things for families to do from archery to shuffle board, to a day camp for kids. I can't possibly list it all here. I invite you to check out their website. I enjoyed being a Wee Wozzle there when I was four years old a long time ago and my grandchildren enjoy it now.

As much as I think that is a fun place, you still have to roll out of bed and hustle the kids up to their camps when you could be enjoying a slow breakfast together on the porch and going out for a canoe ride or early morning swim together. I think quality time together around our camp playing board games or jumping off the dock without a schedule is best. If you are older like me, a long walk or paddle and then just soaking in the beauty is a welcome break from a very busy world.
