About this property

Luxury in a Historic Landmark-great restaurants within walking distance!

Enter a by-gone era at our stonehouse, circa 1820~Unique architecture & history. Honored as a Historic Landmark in our town. Step back in time, yet enjoy an extremely comfortable bed and beautiful neighborhood with a park!

The space:
You have private use of the house in a quiet neighborhood! Upstairs are three bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms. The ground floor has the dining/living room, foyer and 1/2 bath, "Rocker Room" (circa 1820) and "Vintage Kitchen" (1950). We have achieved historic landmark status from our town, and we are very proud to share the history of this house that is connected to the War of 1812 and Buffalo!

There is so much to do in this area! We are a short drive from the Highmark Stadium where the Buffalo Bills play (32 min), Buffalo/Niagara Airport (15 min), Niagara Falls (45 min), & Several Buffalo Universities and Colleges (think Parent Weekend or Student Drop off). It takes less than 30 min on major streets and expressways to get to Downtown Buffalo hosting a wide variety of theatres, restaurants and nightlife. Drive to the East of us to reach Darien Lake Theme Park (25 min), Akron Falls (15 min), Batavia (30 min) and Rochester Area (60 min). Many of our guests wished they stayed longer, just to enjoy the house and neighborhood, much less the reason they came into town! Spring offers a Saturday morning farmers market, local hiking, pond fishing, bike paths and a park across the street is great for families.

All the bedrooms are outfitted with extremely comfortable, high end mattresses, including Saatva, Winkbed and Aireloom. We have dressed the beds with soft, cotton and hypoallergenic sheets, pillows and blankets. There are 2 full bathrooms upstairs with the bedrooms, with plenty of towels for you to use. Toilet paper, liquid hand soap & body wash are provided in each bathroom. Want to know more about the 3 bedrooms? Read on...

The Master King bedroom has a great king bed and twins. The wood floors in this room are original soft pine from the 1860's & we are very proud of the refinishing job we did! There are vintage wooden shutters in this room that date to the early 1940's. One of the twin beds is in an "annex" room that was built as a sewing room with an ironing board built into the wall in 1947. It features a walk in closet. This bedroom shares a hallway bathroom with the canopy room.

The middle bedroom is called the Rose Room after my daughter, who loves to paint roses, and you will see her artwork in that room. It has an incredibly comfortable mattress on the queen bed and en suite bathroom. The bathroom has newly installed tile and a gorgeous vessel sink that is hand-thrown on the wheel by my husband Jack. This room has an electric fireplace for ambiance and heat.

The older part of the house hosts the "Canopy Room", which has exposed original beams & a queen bed under a canopy. Antique dresser and beaded milk glass vases and lamps adorn this space. This room was the servants quarters in the 1940's and still has a back stairway that empties very close to the kitchen. We ask that you not use these stairs, as they are very steep. In the early 1800's, this was probably where they entered the loft bedroom via a ladder. The canopy room shares a hallway bathroom with the master king room. Past Guests think this is the most romantic room!

The three bedrooms can also accommodate a family smaller than 8! We also imagined that a couple with no kids would spend the weekend at our house with one or two other couples. Reunions? Hotel alternative? A romantic weekend with no kids (imagine the house to yourselves!)? Consider the possibilities!

Your dining/living room can be used to enjoy catered or take out food from 9 restaurants all within walking distance. The restaurants cover a spectrum of prices and meal choices, from a burger, pizza or gourmet plates. I have a great binder in the house with restaurant menus and recommendations.

You may use the kitchen for informal cooking. You will experience a small, cute kitchen, pretty much like it was in 1947. It has countertop appliances: induction 2 burner cooktop, George Foreman Grill, cottage size fridge, vintage wall oven, microwave, keurig machine (coffee pods provided), toaster, coffee pot (all sorts of coffee & sweeteners are provided), blender. We will have mugs, vintage dishes, bowls, silverware & wine glasses for you to use. There is no dishwasher, so you will need to wash the dishes you use and return them to the cupboards. I will provide common kitchen cleaning supplies and trash bags.

The kitchen remains as the greatest throw back to older times. We decided to leave it as it was originally installed, circa 1947. We have records that new ovens were installed in 1955 & they still work! Recently, a mason told us the brick walls look like 19th century work. Eighty years of a family's life was left in the attic and cupboards, so we were able to display and even reuse many items from a bygone era. Just outside the kitchen is the original room of the house, with a grand fireplace and rockers for you to relax. The walls in that space are the original plaster walls, we didn't paint over them! In the winter, we will set up your first wood fire for you to enjoy free of charge. We appreciate a small fee to pay for additional fires. We provide hardwood that is cut from trees on the property and prefer that you do not purchase other wood. We want to meet with you when you arrive to show you how to set up the fire and enjoy it safely.

We recently added a Smart TV in the living room. Please remember your own passwords to the streaming services you prefer. Our space invites families to talk over a puzzle, play games and enjoy the area. Several of our guests mentioned they didn't even turn on the TV, but really enjoyed the puzzle on the piano!

Like I said, the property is a work in progress. You might see us in the barn outback, working in there to open a ceramic studio. Currently there are several pieces of pottery in the house that Jack made, some even are for sale. We hope in the summer to offer "Come and Play in Clay...and Stay!" Wonderful family home!
We spent Thanksgiving week in Honey House in Clarence. We had a grand time hanging out in the house and also enjoying Clarence and Buffalo. The House was spacious -- big dining table for computers, games or eating. There was plenty of room in the living room for football watching. The bedrooms were also spacious and beds very comfortable. The bathrooms were updated and there was plenty of hot water for the five of us. Sue and Jack are amazing hosts with check ins to make sure we were comfortable and needing anything. The five of us had such a good time admiring the art, antique items and artifacts that are in the house. We also took Sue's recommendations and ate in 4 of Clarence's restaurants that were all walking distance to the house. Sue was so helpful before we arrived, during our visit and also after we departed. I left a valuable item in the house and she sent it to me. You don't get that service if you stay in a hotel! We have family in Buffalo and I am sure if we come to visit, Honey House will be our home away from home.

In Town for a Family Wedding Weekend
Sue and Jack have such a beautiful, spacious and welcoming home! They are also the very best kind of hosts - attentive (checking in once each morning via text to see if we needed anything) but very respectful of our privacy and space. The house is so spacious, clean and welcoming, with beautiful gardens, outdoor artworks, history and artifacts as well as comfortable a/c and modern bathrooms and conveniences. We recommend the Honey House highly and certainly would book again in the future!

Great Stay!
We really enjoyed our stay. The house is great, as long as you're not expecting a modern house. We weren't, so we (mom, dad, and 4 teens) enjoyed it as the bit of history that it is. Very clean, and plenty of space. Sue made sure we had what we needed and let us know of opportunities in the community, as well as about many of the restaurants in the area. Great hostess, and great house. We would definitely come here again!

We live a literal stone's throw from the Honeyhouse, so we can quickly help you out with anything you may need. Jack is a talented craftsman working in clay, so throughout the house you will see his handmade work: bathroom sinks, vases & lamps. This summer, he plans on opening up a pottery studio in the barn on the property, so you may even be able to see him sculpt clay when you visit. Sue is a science teacher, using summers to help out with the renovation

Why they chose this property

When the old stonehouse just a few doors away went up for sale, we checked it out and decided to take the plunge to restore it, so we unpacked the tools and set up a plan. During the first summer, we rented the house out as a set to a local film producer for a haunted lighthouse film. Some of the interior scenes for "Widow's Point" starring Craig Sheffer, were filmed at the house before we renovated.

After that, we started the exterior with removing overgrown trees and roof work. Restoring the original windows next, & that was hard because most were painted shut decades ago, many broken. We discovered wavy antique glass panes on the property and wherever we needed to replace a pane, we meticulously cut the antique glass to fit. Now you can see the lines, bubbles & waves in almost all the windows made by glassblowers in the late 1800's. Jack scraped and painted the original cedar shake and wooden trim on the outside of the house. We changed the color from a drab green to a deep blue.

The entire lower floor is made from limestone that masons must have mined locally in the 1800's. The lower floor exterior walls are 14 inches of solid stone. That made working the electricity and plumbing very difficult, but we did it! We did replace the bathroom sinks with Jack's gorgeous hand-thrown vessel sinks, but many of the features are original, we just cleaned and painted.

The walls in here are the original plaster walls, we didn't paint over them!

What makes this property unique

You'll feel like you stepped back in time when you enter. We hope to fill the house with more antiques & Jack's pottery this summer. We also want to use the space to sell Jack's pottery to our visitors. We'll make a wood fire during the winter in the Rocker Room. We are working on the backyard landscaping next spring.

Clarence Hollow has recently opened up a beautiful banquet hall in a renovated vintage church just down the road. Our house could be where you spend the weekend after enjoying an event at the "Brick Hall." We counted 9 restaurants where you can dine-in then walk back to the house, or get take out and eat on our lovely large dining room table with vintage dishes.

There is a lot to do with your family around here! There is a large town park across the street for hiking, cross country skiing, sledding, picnics, fishing & playgrounds! There are miles of bike paths that start at this park. Akron Falls and Tillman Swamps are just short drives away too. There's a small bowling alley you can walk to for Sunday morning Breakfast & Bowl. Shopping? Drive east to go antiquing, drive west for the mall. A few miles away are malls, movie theatres, Highmark Stadium where the Buffalo Bills play, Darien Lake, several Buffalo universities, & the Buffalo/Niagara Airport. Niagara Falls, USA is just a 45 minute ride from the house, mostly on expressways.
