About this property

Sunny Adobe Casita With Fireplace 1.2mi/Plaza

My place is 1.2mi from the plaza in a conveniently located residential neighborhood. With its small, simple, Santa Fe style, you'll feel at home right away! The main room has a kiva fireplace & sleeper sofa as well as a full kitchen & small dining area. There is a separate bedroom with a closet & washer/dryer. The enclosed, private courtyard is perfect for kids & pets. This guesthouse is separate from, but next to my home where I live with my partner, our son, and two fuzzy dogs!
As you walk in through the rustic red gate, you enter into an open, shady courtyard/small garden filled with lilac, an apricot tree, and wildflowers in the summer months. The front porch (in New Mexico it's called a portal) spans the length of the guesthouse & is very much a part of the living space. With it's lively rug & simple outdoor seating area, it is always hard to make yourself go inside & miss out on our incredible New Mexico weather! Two sets of french doors are meant to be thrown open to bring the outside in.

The first set of doors opens to the main room with its traditional kiva fireplace, sleeper sofa, and full kitchen. The flat-screen TV is available for streaming & both Netflix & Amazon video services are included. The guesthouse has radiant floor heat and colored concrete floors, although the fireplace is often more than enough. The kitchen has a full-size refrigerator, gas stove, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, & is stocked with pots, pans, & utensils. A small dining area with a handmade table & vintage chairs is perfect for dining, working, or games!

A small washer/dryer unit is next to the bathroom which has a tub/shower combination. There is a pocket door hidden in the doorway between the bedroom & main room for privacy (or supervision if necessary!). The bedroom has a queen-size bed (built by Scott) along with a closet & hangers. The second set of French doors opens into this bedroom from the portal, so you can let the beautiful weather or just the sunshine in!

Please keep in mind that Santa Fe has been living in drought conditions for many years, and as a result, we have some of the lowest water consumption per person in the US, with our per-person rates averaging 95 gallons per person per day, compared to the national average of 150! We therefore ask you to be mindful of your water use in our dry city (i.e. turn off the tap while brushing, etc...).

Amazing casita close to the Plaza!
We were blown away by how adorable our casita was and how it had literally everything we needed! You can tell the owners take great care of it and want visitors to be at home there. Our kiddo slept on the futon/couch comfortably. Plenty of space for the 3 of us + our dog. I wish we could’ve stayed even longer!

The perfect Casita
We arrived at Casita. Alll was exactly as advertised except they didn’t mention there was coffee and tea and a welcome bottle of wine. Place was clean and comfortable. There were recommendations for restaurants and we did 2 of them and they were great. Made our balloon festival experience perfect

I love Santa Fe! I feel so lucky to live here!! I've always believed that living here is the closest you can get to living in another country in the U.S. I moved to Santa Fe 30 years ago, and it's such a wonderful place both my mom and sister now live here as well. Although I started my career in academia studying Neuropsychology, I never finished my PhD and ended up spending the last sixteen years as an internet retailer. I work from home so I'm around a lot of the time, and I live here with my partner Scott, our 14-year-old son, and two dogs. Our son is homeschooled, so we aren't the family that leaves for work in the morning & all come home in the evening - we're all over the place! Although I love to travel, I am honestly so happy in Santa Fe that it is hard to tear myself away and I frankly don't get on the road much at all! My house is my treasure - the original building is a 50-year-old adobe, although it's been so remodeled & expanded over time it can be hard to find those original walls. The guesthouse & studio were added in 2005, and we have just recently renovated the studio into a living space from the artist studio it had been. We remodeled the kitchen area with a full-size gas stove & new tiled countertops. Scott built the murphy bed as well as installed the new sink & toilet. We landscaped the courtyard and hope to keep adding to it! We've done all the work ourselves and really enjoyed the process. The climate and altitude are very different here, please feel free to ask me about any of it! We are around 7000ft, which is much more than a mile and will affect you physically. Be sure to bring water with you everywhere, always put on sunscreen, and remember - one cocktail at this altitude is the same as drinking THREE at sea level! My motto? "To Live A Life Worth Laughing At"

Why they chose this property

I bought this house in 2002 after a divorce, and it has been one of the greatest sources of joy to me. I am grateful every day for this place where I work, live, raise my child, grow my flowers, and enjoy the New Mexico sunshine with my family!
My plan was to live here forever, although the 2008 recession hit us hard, we were able to keep our house, which only makes us more grateful for it.
Having the opportunity to share my sunny New Mexico life with people is a gift!

What makes this property unique

Housing in Santa Fe is extremely difficult to find, so I was lucky when my house came available. I actually put in my offer to buy the second it came available. Luckily my closest friend bought a house a few blocks away & my mom & sister live within a mile! I'm so lucky to live here!
