Welcome to the most charming town in the Sierra Nevada mountains. A lovingly preserved gold rush town, Mariposa is steeped in history and natural beauty. With everything from museums and dining to hiking and water sports, this area has something for everyone.
The most obvious attraction near Mariposa is Yosemite National Park, which is one of the most beautiful and popular national parks in the world, with its waterfalls, meadows, granite cliffs, and giant sequoias. But Mariposa itself is a traveler's paradise with plenty of things to do, from outdoor adventures to museums and historic sites.
From Mariposa, you can take an hour's drive to the entrance to the Yosemite National Park, where you can explore the park's trails, waterfalls, and wildlife. Hike to the top of Half Dome, Yosemite's iconic granite outcropping during the summer (a limited permit granted via lottery is required for this trip), or take a leisurely stroll through Yosemite Valley and see the famous El Capitan and Bridalveil Fall. For a truly memorable experience, take a nighttime stargazing tour in the park or rent a bike and take on the many trails.
Located just 30 minutes from Mariposa, Bass Lake is the perfect place to experience all sorts of water sports, from kayaking and paddleboarding to swimming and fishing. There are even boat rentals available, so you can relax and fish or spend your time tubing and/or wakeboarding around the lake for an afternoon.
If you're interested in history, you'll love exploring Mariposa's and nearby Oakhurst’s Gold Rush past. Start by visiting the Mariposa Museum & History Center, which has exhibits on the Gold Rush, the Miwok Indians, and the early history of the town. In addition to the Mariposa Museum & History Center, there are several other museums in the area that are worth visiting. The California State Mining and Mineral Museum is a fascinating place to learn about the state's mining history, while the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad Museum gives you a glimpse into the history of railroading in the area. You can even enjoy a ride through the forest hills in a real steam engine! This is a very popular local attraction.
You can also take a walking tour of Historic Downtown Mariposa, which is filled with historic buildings, shops, and restaurants, or immerse yourself in the beauty of Oakhurst’s historic village called Fresno Flats that is definitely worth a visit.
Mariposa, California is one of the most beautiful and exciting vacation destinations in the United States. From the stunning natural beauty of Yosemite National Park to the historic Gold Rush sites and outdoor activities, there is so much to see and do.
Vrbo House Rules
A highchair and pack and play are included for our youngest guests.
If you bring your pet, you are responsible for cleaning up after it around the property.
The property is unfenced. Due to this there is always a chance of wildlife encounters, including the occasional rattlesnake. Please keep pets leashed and supervised.
Outdoor fires of any kind are strictly prohibited in the high fire season, usually June-November, due to risk of wildfires.
Wildfires are a possibility at certain times of year, and because of this, air quality might deteriorate during these times. The house is equipped with air purifiers for our guests’ comfort. We have an abundance of wildlife and you may observe deer, turkeys, squirrels, hawks, and rabbits. Not as common but sometimes spotted are coyotes, bears, mountain lions, raccoons, skunks, opossums, rattlesnakes, tarantulas, and scorpions. You may occasionally encounter poison oak and poison ivy in the area around the home.
During winter months it is recommended that guests carry snow chains for their vehicles in case of snow or icy conditions. Conditions can be unpredictable at this time of year and it is recommended that guests’ vehicles are prepared for the weather. Snowy or icy road conditions are common in the mountains of California, including Yosemite, from fall through spring. When these conditions exist, federal regulations (in Yosemite) and state law (outside Yosemite) require that you use chains or cables in order to reduce the chances of accidents. If roads are icy or snowy, expect chain controls to be in effect. In Yosemite, park rangers frequently check vehicles, reminding drivers to install tire chains if necessary. Snow chains are usually not mandatory for 4x4 drive and winter tires.
Occasionally throughout the year, power outages occur, though they are typically brief. In this case, there will not be hot water, heat, a/c, or access to appliances. There are backup lights, however.
