Know before you book
My sister and I stayed for 4 nights while visiting our elderly mother.
The good:
- It was clean, fresh, and newly renovated.
- We didn't cook while we were there but the kitchen seemed adequately supplied with dishes, etc.
- The location is only a few minutes from downtown Black Mountain, but the neighborhood itself does not lend itself to walking.
The bad:
- There is a keyless entry, which is good, but it was rather finicky. Perhaps the batteries needed replacement.
- There is clearly a moisture problem in this unit and the mildew smell was very strong. Every time we returned, the smell was somewhat overpowering and we weren't sure we could stay.
- The property is listed as a "lower unit," you should know that it is someone's basement that was turned into an apartment. This means anytime someone walks around upstairs, it sounds like they are walking right on top of you. I am not sure if the people upstairs could hear us or not, but you are basically just staying in someone's house. I'm not sure there is anything that can be done to mitigate this, so just be aware.
- there were mini-split units for heat/AC but no instructions. We eventually got the heat to come on but were quite cold prior to that - it was below freezing outside and there weren't any extra blankets.
If the mildew problem is addressed and/or the price is significantly lowered, it might be a reasonable rental. I am generally not a complainer, but we would not stay here again.
