Comfortable and did not lack for anything
The house was everything described and we had a very relaxing and comfortable stay. Will definitely try to stay here again when we come back.
We had a wonderful stay. This property is wonderful. Quiet street, lovely setting and the home is beautiful. Had a wonderful sunroom perfect for early morning coffee or reading a book. I highly recommend.
Excellent place! The owner was extremely accommodating when I had a question upon arrival. The location is perfect. Very close to downtown Black Mountain and easily accessible to Asheville. It was just right for my family to enjoy a quick trip to the mountains.
Very comfortable home with two bedrooms-2 up and 1 down. Well equipped kitchen. Quiet neighborhood with nice back porch and Kingsford charcoal grill. Two car garage. Very close to Montreat and Black Mountain. Will book then next time in the area
This is a lovely place and was our second time staying there. It could use some updating but is very comfortable and has everything you really need. The house is in a lovely, quiet, and convenient location.
Perfect for two couples with lots of 2 living spaces to sit and relax indoors and outside with the covered deck. The sun room was our favorite place to sit and visit with one another.

Great house in an adorable little town
We spent a lovely weekend at the Black Bear Retreat. The house was just as described, and had everything we needed. Black Mountain is such a quaint little town, and it was super close to Asheville. We really enjoyed ourselves and are so glad that we stayed at the Black Bear Retreat!
This was our sixth time here! We keep returning because it is a wonderful house, impeccably clean, and a pleasure to stay in. And Black Mountain has a beautiful little lake and interesting shops and restaurants.
We had a great time visiting Black Mountain. This home was very pretty, close to town, yet had a delightful woodsy, private feel. The owners were attentive and friendly. We would definitely stay here again if we wind up in the area again.

We really enjoyed our time there it's a beautiful location and was perfect for us close town but felt very private. We loved staying there and plan on returning. Everything is as pictured no surprises. The owner is very responsive if needed. I would highly recommend for a wonderful stay in Black Mountain.
My husband wanted to stay close to town. I wanted to be in the woods, more isolated. This property fit BOTH! Furnishings were comfortable, kitchen was well stocked and it was very clean. We will def stay here again.

Our second time...and we'll be back again!
The house was lovely, and beautifully equipped and furnished. The private master bedroom suite was perfect for us, and the mattress was the most comfortable I've ever been on. There's a big kitchen, a beautiful sunlit sitting room, and a setting that is easily accessible, but feels very private. This was our second visit, and we'll be back!
Very nice home. Excellent A/C. Hard to find grass for dog ‘s business.
Very good

Our fourth stay there, all have been great
We have stayed at this property in December for four years in a row. It is a beautiful well-furnished house that is very comfortable. Best of all is the layout...the downstairs is perfect for socializing, but the upstairs master bedroom and bathroom can be completely private if someone wants to be alone. The appliances and entertainment center are top-notch. There are lots of windows and a very nice sunroom. And Black Mountain is a charming town, with lots of good restaurants.

Lovely Get Away
This is a wonderfully spacious, modern home just as described. The home is clean, well appointed and on a wonderfully quiet cul de sac just minutes from downtown Black Mountain. It has a feeling of privacy and yet is not remote.
The owners are very helpful and not only would we recommend this home to others but hope we can stay there again.
Day trips to Asheville, Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mountain and many other interesting places are very practical. Yet, the atmosphere of the home for a quiet get away made us just stay in and read for a couple of days!

Great week in Black Mountain
This is the second summer my husband and I have rented Black Bear Retreat for a restful week in the charming town of Black Mountain. The house is very nice with everything you need for a great week of relaxation. It's easy to find and close to town so you are only minutes away from great food and shopping. Last year we actually saw a bear right on the street in front of the house. The owners are ready to help with anything you need. If you want a quiet, restful time, consider renting Black Bear Retreat for your next stay in Black Mountain.

Love this house
This is a wonderful place to stay while in the Black Mountain area. When we drove into the garage, we already felt like we were home. The house is comfortable and inviting. It had everything we needed for our month long stay. The bed was so comfortable we wanted to bring it home with us! The kitchen and bathrooms were well equipped and the deck and sunroom became our favorite places to relax. The area is quiet and secluded yet close to shopping, restaurants and grocery stores. We have found the house we will rent every time we visit Black Mountain. Thank you Ed for making it all so easy.

A luxorious
A luxurious, clean, beautifully decorated home high in the trees. The master bedroom has lovely views an honestly looks and feels like being in a tree house. Comfortable bed and attractive and comfortable furniture throughout. Well equipped kitchen. Our favorite room is the sun room off the dining room that leads to the deck. Again, views and lots of light. My contact with the owner was pleasant. Definitely 5 stars!

Loved it!
The house is so comfortable that we felt like we were at home from our first day there. Everything we needed was provided for us. The house is clean, well maintained and exactly as shown in the listing.
We would recommend this listing to anyone that would enjoy a stay in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. There is so much to do in the area. We walked around the lake at the nearby park, shopped in Black Mountain, visited nearby Asheville, ate at many wonderful resturants (we recommend Okie Dokies Smokehouse) and enjoyed sitting on the upper deck day and night. Thank you to these very helpful owners. We will stay again when in the area.

Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, location
Disliked: Listing accuracy
Good for the price
Generally the home was fine. I think the description of the home is a bit overrated. It's quite dated, the layout is a bit strange (there's another review that talks about this in detail), and there were errors in the number of bathrooms hat were listed which was one of our primary considerstions for choosing this home. Otherwise, the location was great and communication with the host was good.

Black Bear Retreat is a beautiful, large home with a great natural view from the many windows, especially in the sunroom. The beds were very comfy and kitchen spacious (big fridge too!). We liked being able to pull into the garage when it was pouring down rain at our arrival. Having a grill to cook on was very useful as well. The owner was quick to respond to any questions or concerns via email or phone. The only reason why I didn't rate it 'excellent' was the lack of good cookware (pans need replacing and knives need to be sharpened) and an awkward dishwasher....nothing to keep me from returning!
About the host
Hosted by Ed and Damaris De Varona
I worked as an attorney in Miami. I am a licensed realtor and travel often cross country. I am 57 years old. My wife and I have been married 24 years. I am self employed and enjoy considerable scheduling flexibility. We like to get away on long weekends. Longer trips will usually happen in the Spring and Summer. There is also some time for us on spring break in March or Winter break in December to travel. We enjoy traveling to new places in our small RV. We have two beautiful daughters ages, 24 and 22. We enjoy the great outdoors but also enjoy museums and touring new cities. This home is available on short notice.
Why they chose this property
I was looking for a total getaway home that did not compromise privacy for convenience or space for amenities or views for location. Black Bear delivers more than your typical cabin in the woods. I can walk or bike into downtown Black Mountain for groceries or other provisions. I can park my RV out front or my cars in the two car garage. I can walk with the kids to the lake and the community pool. I can start hikes into the surrounding mountains within minutes from my home. I was looking for a place to relax and unwind to enjoy mountain sunsets from my decks and hear the sounds of nature and not the sounds of traffic or neighbors. Bird watch from my backyard decks. Eat your meals "al fresco" every night as you watch the sunset. I wanted to have a modern home with all the modern high tech conveniences. I did not want to settle for a 'Spartan' mountain cabin with limited or unpaved road access, internet access or spotty phone service. I wanted to have plenty of room for guests. I wanted a place to start my day trips into the Blue Ridge without having to worry about paved access, long winding gravel roads or adverse weather conditions. I wanted a home where AC in the Summer is strictly optional but four seasons can be enjoyed. Fall season at Black Bear is stunning and Winter season is mostly mild with some post card perfect snow showers.
I wanted a place within a day trip of all the Nature activities Western NC has to offer. Black Bear has delivered for me I know it will for you as well.
