A luxury cottage created by Black Mountain College
Built in 1944 and originally named the Jalowetz Cottage after the German music composer who lived there with his wife, this cottage was built as a Black Mountain College student project under the direction of Lawrence Kocher, a modern architect. He inspired his students to work with locally found materials, and to create space that was small in square footage yet felt spacious and inspiring. The cottage has been renovated and added onto over the years with a fantastic deck, master bedroom with jetted tub, full kitchen and more. It is decorated with internationally themed original art and photographs. The deck overlooks a meadow and stream that quietly babbles on its way to our private lake set on our 70+ acre property, surrounded by 360 degree mountain views.

Loved this house and location! The house was really cool. What would make this place perfect would be king size beds & larger tv with cable. Otherwise amazing! The location is lovely & black mountain is a great town!

Thank you for staying with us and for your feedback. While we do not offer cable tv in most of our rentals here at Lake Eden we did upgrade our onsite wifi pretty substantially recently so that guests can access entertainment that way. Safe travels and please come see us again on your next visit to the area.
Our stay was wonderful! The additions of the historic photos depicting the cottage during the time of black mountain college added to its rich history and sense of place. This cottage is sacred to our family and it provided much needed togetherness. Thank you!

This place could have been perfect. However the beds were uncomfortable, the stereo did not work, no TV and the fireplace had a broken part. This place needs some TLC, rotten wood repair and a king size bed.

Thank you for your feedback on your stay at Lake Eden. I am sorry that everything was not to your liking. It is certainly our desire for all guests to have a positive stay.
As I mentioned prior to your arrival unfortunately there was a part on back order for the gas fireplace that we were waiting on. I do wish we could have had it operational for you. We do provide a screen and DVD player as well as wifi for entertainment but as our listing states, there is no cable or satellite in the cottage. In regards to the stereo, there is a vintage record player and stereo in a cabinet however most guests these days choose to play music on their personal devices. I did offer to come and make sure the stereo was working but that offer was declined.
We will certainly check out the status of the beds, although they have all been replaced recently and we had not heard any other comments in that regard. Unfortunately the space in the bedroom where the bed is will not accommodate a king but of course we also do list the bed sizes that are available. The cottage has two queen bedrooms and a trundle room.
We enjoyed our stay at this historic cottage and the space was decorated beautifully. The bed was comfy and there was lots of privacy which was wonderful. The fire pit was even loaded and ready for a fire which was so thoughtful. During an evening walk, we made the grave mistake of walking across to the other side of the road to enjoy the sunset at the lake when a boy's camp staff person came running over to yell at us and tell us we were not allowed on that side of the road. Apparently, one side of the road is okay to be on and one side is not depending on whether you're a guest of Lake Eden retreats, or the boy's camp. We looked everywhere but there were no signs to let us know this. I can just imagine how menacing we must have looked as a retired couple with a dog on a leash taking in the sunset to warrant such a fierce response. lol

Thank you for staying with at Lake Eden and for your feedback. Our property is adjacent as mentioned to a 700 acre summer camp, and while we do provide an in-house map of the grounds and try to make the borders clear, with two properties of this size it can become tricky to have signage located at every point.
That being said, we are sorry you had that interaction and have had a discussion with the camp in regards to the over-enthusiasm the counselor demonstrated in this case while focusing on child safety. Fortunately most of the camp experience as a neighbor relates to the sound of dinner bells and bugles in the distance.
Cottage nice, a bit rustic. Beautiful setting. Dishwasher did not work even after handy man showed us how to turn it on. Toaster did not work. Dryer would not heat. Not wheelchair/walker accessible. Several steps both ways. Brother only stayed 1night with his wife because of this, she uses a walker due to MD. Disappointed in that.

Thank you for your review. As mentioned we did come and instruct on how to use the dishwasher which is actually less than a few months old. It has been used many times since and no problems have been found. Unfortunately the start process is not the most intuitive we have ever seen and although the manual is there in the kitchen we will be printing instructions for the future to assist. We did replace the toaster as this was the first time we heard of the problem. The dryer has also been working as usual. We were unaware the guest had any mobility issues which is unfortunate as we do keep a portable ramp on property for us when needed.
Beds not adequate for six adults. Trundle beds ok for children. Not grown ups. An ironing board was available but no iron. Hand soap available but no bath soap. Clothes rods available but no hangers. Deck furniture rusty and in need of paint. D d had to be replaced when we arrived. Leigh responded to my request very rapidly. The fishing pond is quire a distance from the house which surprised me since the information stated fishing from the house property. True but the property is many acres. I don’t think I would return to this property

Thank you for your feedback on your recent stay. As our listing states, the cottage has two bedrooms with queen beds and one smaller room with the two trundle beds. Basically two singles that can be put together or used separately.
We will certainly check to see if the iron or other items has gone missing from the house. They sometimes do unfortunately along with hairdryers, etc.
As for the property itself, yes our place at Lake Eden is over 70 acres of mostly open fields, some woods and a small lake which you drive directly past on your way to the lodgings. The cottage itself sits above one of the streams that feed the lake. Most guests enjoy the space and sense of privacy which Lake Eden provides.
Great place to stay, secluded and quiet location yet still close to Asheville and other attractions. The house was clean and cozy, a relaxing place to stay.
My group enjoyed a weekend getaway at this clean, well-maintained property and great location at Lake Eden. Easy check in/check out, cabin had everything we needed and was clean and comfortable. We’ll be back!
Definitely recommend staying here. We came for the snow and we got it! The owners were very accommodating as we got snowed in and needed to stay an extra night. Also, stove stopped working and they brought over a hot plate. The dogs loved the snow and playing on the mountain. The only downside was they don’t have cable or a smart tv, which wasn’t listed on the online description, I just didn’t realize. So come prepared for that. Other than that the place was a perfect getaway!
We greatly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful home surrounded by woods in the mountains! We were assisted in person checking in, and Leigh was gracious and helpful. The home was even more beautiful than the pictures suggested, with ambient light throughout, a wrap around deck and luxury accommodations. We liked it so much when we walked in that we decided to stay an additional night! We were close to both Asheville and Black Mountain, which is a lovely smaller town filled with breweries, shops and restaurants. Highly recommend!
Good property in nice location but fireplace did not work.
Listing well represented this property in a private setting. Cannot give it 5 stars as the fireplace was not working, and there was insufficient information in the house regarding internet connection, operation of electronics, etc. House manager was responsive to help.

Thank you for staying with us and taking the time to write a review. As noted we have been having a hard time getting the replacement part for the gas fireplace as it is on back order. We do apologize for this inconvenience and certainly hope to have it resolved soon.
While there is an in-house guest book with basic information re. wifi and the cottage, we will certainly take a look to see if there is additional information we can add to make guest stays easier.
This place is great! The cabin is exactly as advertised, although the master bathroom might be better than advertised! Great location , close to Asheville and Black Mountain which was a hidden gem as far as we were concerned. Super dog friendly area. - I brought mine and the exploring is great. Just be aware that there are a couple loose dogs running around the larger property, though not typically by this cabin. They are friendly, but just a note for whom that might matter. We would absolutely stay here again.
Our stay was wonderful! The property was beautiful and well managed. The house was comfortable and conveniently located just 5+ride to main road that takes you to charming downtown Black Mountain. Lots of things to do in the immediate area and a short ride to downtown Asheville.
We loved the location on Lake Eden. The Sequoia was a lovely home for a week. However, there were some issues: there was no storage for clothes. I had to live out of my suitcase. Each room needs a closet or bureau. Hangers should be provided in each room. We also had difficulty with phone communications. I was unable to phone or text several people, including my cousin who was planning to visit us from the Winston-Salem area.

Thank you for visiting and for your review. In each of sequoia’s three bedrooms there are some combo of shelves or cabinets as well has hanging rods for clothes. We will definitely take a look and replace coat hangers if they’ve gone missing.
Verizon works best on the property (it’s what we use) with some other services being limited. We also do recommend for guests whose phones don’t get good reception to look at making internet calls as we have strong wifi in each rental at Lake Eden.
This property was the best of both worlds for us: the house was perfectly outfitted with all that we could need to cook and relax in every modern comfort while also being deep in the woods. We walked the trails every day seeing something new! We loved hearing taps from the nearby camp and enjoyed completely unplugging with little to no phone service (just how we like a vacation). The wifi was excellent which allowed us to still connect with friends and family and let them know exactly what they were missing! We loved walking and thinking about all of the Black Mountain artists who also roamed the same area and really enjoyed nearby hikes at Lookout Mountain and Catwba Falls. We can't wait to do this again!
This property was just what we were looking for! The house was large enough for our family and we loved the eclectic & artistic decor. It was very comfortable and the surrounding retreat property was beautiful and relaxing. The kitchen was missing a few items (large mixing/serving bowls and no blender) but we made it work. The deck was a great place for our morning coffee and then at night we enjoyed making s'mores in the fire circle. The town of Black Mountain was charming and Asheville was a short drive away. We will definitely return to Lake Eden!
A great property at a great location - out of the way but still close to everything. I wanted some place to work from home that wasn't my home and this was perfect. My dog and I walked the property every morning and afternoon and the internet speed allowed me to get my work done during the day. Asheville is 10 minutes away and there are plenty of restaurants and coffee places close by.
Wonderful, relaxing weekend. Enjoyed fishing a couple of times. Black Mountain was an easy drive and had a enjoyable downtown area with great shops and restaurants. Adequate space for our family.
The home is wonderful and the property is fantastic. So beautiful and peaceful. We felt 100 miles away but were only 18 mins from downtown. Our dog loved it!!! One of the best places we have stayed at in Asheville. I would highly recommend. I just cannot say enough great things about it!!
Nice location. Enjoyed jacuzzi tub. The house had a definite mildew smell in places and the hot water did not last in the master bath shower. Eventually gave up on the shower. Enjoyed sitting on the deck.

Thank you for your comments and feedback and we are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. We will definitely take a look at the hot water heater as this is the first we have heard of any problems. We will also check to make sure the dehumidifiers we run continually are operating properly as after a wet season in the mountains maintaining good air quality is of course extremely important.
