Villa Kallergi Athena: private pool, garden and sea view, near the beach in Crete

Villa Kallergi - Athena: A Timeless Retreat in Loutra, Crete

Welcome to a Family Legacy :
Step into Villa Kallergi - Athena, a cherished family-run heaven in the peaceful medieval village of Loutra, Rethymno Prefecture, where hospitality has thrived for over 25 years since ~1999. Pioneers on platforms like Homeaway (later Vrbo & Abritel), TripAdvisor (since 2006) and Airbnb (since 2010), we’ve earned a stellar 4.88-5/5 rating from hundreds of guests who rave about our authentic experience, breathtaking views, and thoughtful design. Rated 9.2/10 on Booking.com and praised as a “perfect family villa” on TripAdvisor, this is more than a stay—it’s a home crafted with love.

Unrivaled Space and Design :
Spanning 640 square meters of seamlessly integrated indoor and outdoor space, our villa welcomes 12 guests across 6 private suites, each with its own bathroom and most featuring kitchenettes for self-catered convenience. The loft-style master suite, stretching over two floors, offers a luxurious retreat with ample space and charm. In 2025, we’ve redefined luxury with a newly redesigned swimming pool area, perfect for refreshing dips and social gatherings. Ascend to our two-level roof terrace—a cozy lounge for evening bonding and a sunbathing heaven by day, where sunbeds transform into seating as the sun sets, offering panoramic sea views under the stars.

Historic and Natural Wonders :
Immerse yourself in history with a 400-year-old vine that climbs from the ground floor to the roof garden, yielding sweet grapes in August-September, and a medieval courtyard entrance that whispers tales of old Crete. Inside, a concert piano in the main lounge invites music lovers to create unforgettable moments, blending culture with comfort.

Unparalleled Comfort :
Rest easy on Cocomat beds and mattresses, crafted from hypoallergenic materials to ensure a healthy, restful sleep—a feature guests consistently highlight in reviews. Every detail, from the airy suites to the thoughtfully designed common areas, reflects our commitment to your well-being.

A Personal Touch :
Your stay begins with a warm welcome basket featuring organic fruits, local spirits, homemade jams from my mother, chocolate cake, and goodies for families with kids—personal touches that set us apart. Our 25-year legacy shines through in every corner, offering a boutique experience tailored to groups seeking authenticity over mass luxury.

Prime Location with a Twist :
Nestled in Loutra, a serene medieval village, enjoy views to the sea , the olive groves and village rooftops and easy access to Rethymno’s central attractions—both a pro and a con due to the lack of a nearby airport, ensuring a peaceful escape planned around the April-November low-cost flight season. Chania (60 km) and Heraklion (80 km) airports connect you to this hidden gem.

Why Choose Villa Kallergi - Athena? :
- **Unique Multi-Level Layout**: Private suites, a loft master, and versatile outdoor spaces (pool, roof terrace, courtyard) cater to 12 guests with privacy and style.
- **2025 Upgrades**: A redesigned pool area and enhanced terrace elevate your experience.
- **Historic Charm**: A 400-year-old vine and medieval entrance add soul to your stay.

Great Vacation

We were a group of 10 American college students studying abroad looking for a spring break plan. The house was wonderful - roomy, comfortable, good internet. The house has great outdoor spaces too - a roof deck and a terrace perfect for breakfast or lunch. The owners were very kind; they checked in on us to make sure everything was ok. They even let us use the pool of the house next door that they also own. We enjoyed our stay immensely. One recommendation would be to rent a car, as the house is a 10 or 15 minute drive from Rethymno. There is, however, a public bus.

a fantastic villa-complex with total privacy

In the beginning of june 2016 we spent 8 wonderful days in Villa Athina. We were three generations: father with his three grown up children and five grandchildren between 10 and 17 years. Alltogether 12 persons! The Villa is situated in the heart of a little historical Cretan village Loutra and is beautifully framed by arcaic olive groves. The villa is surrounded on two sides by a whitewashed wall and there in the gate stood Mr. Costas Kallergi himself, friendly welcomimg us and showing us around in the gardenlike and beautifully renovated villa-complex. Very impressing were the many terraces, embedded in lush greenery, on different levels with access to the suite-like bedrooms, all equipped with bathroom and kitchinette with fridge. From the garden-level with a little pool (highly appreciated by the youngest) a few steps lead up to the large dining terrace next to the new stonewalled grill, nestled in wineleafs. In the same level, via a little charming tree-shadowed patio, you come to the kitchen with a very high standard of equipments. It was in open connection with the large inside area for leisure with sofas, piano, fireplace, TV etc. In the kitchen was a generous fruit-basqet welcoming us, in the fridge a lot of juices, cheeses, wine etc. This generous gesture was very appriciated. Villa Athina was perfect for us, it never felt crowded though we were so many people. In the evening we all had dinner on the terrace, our Chef des Rotisseurs was handling the grill, preparing lamb, fish or vedgetables while tasting the local wine. Fresh fish and lambsmeat we found in Rethymnon market in 15 min distance. After dinner we could just relax with a nice mixture of leisure activities in groups or together. From the comfortable easychairs on the upper terrace we could have a drink while enjoying the sunset over the sea. The last evening we had an unforgettable supper in the neighbourhood in a paradise-like taverna where we could follow the preparing of all kind of Cretan dishes. All herbs, vedgetables, fruits were from their garden. The lamb was rosted in the outdoor kitchen, the magic smell of rosemary and garlic made us euforic and we enjoyed the dinner under the pergola while the sun set over the sea of King Minos. Finally, we all are very greatful to Costas, Dimitrios and Andreas for their hostility during our stay. For us all it has become a memory for lifetime. Fantastic stay in a fantastic place

Villa Athena is a great place to stay. It is a villa with all comfort you could ask for. Spacious enough to host 13 adults and two (very small) kids even. It is decorated inside and outside with so much attention to detail. We enjoyed our stay tremendously and will definitely stay in the villa again, should we come back to Crete. Thank you again for the lovely, warm and overwelming hospitality!

Wonderful Villa for a great holiday!

We spent a 4 generation family vacation in Kallergi villa. It was the perfect place for 10 adults (including my 86 year old grandfather) and 2 babies. The location made touring the island very comfortable, the villa itself was beautiful, quiet and spacious. Every room had a private en-suite bathroom (of the 5 we used) and Costas was a wonderful host- even brought a birthday cake!!! We found the villa well equipped, including a big jar of olive oil, wine and milk. it was the perfect family vacation!

A wonderful house

We all had a very good vacation in Villa Athena. The house - whow! Just perfect for us. To be able to be private and at the same time have theese marvellous spaces together. This labyrinth-like house has a great charm. The kids (12, 5, 5, 3 years old) loved the pool, of course. The house was very clean and everything functioned well. The landlord´s kindness and thoughtfullness warmed us. He also succeded in getting some french words out of us. I belive we understood eachother to a sufficient extent. We had some meals at the taverna, some distance away. Very good and nice. Several times we ordered food from delivery-service which was surprisingly good, fast and cheap. And we had very nice meals together at the lovely terrace. My wife and I walked around in the area and later in the afternoons joined the others at the beach. Much more left to see, of course, but we experienced much. So my wife and I, the two daughters with husband/boyfriend and the children had a wonderful time. Efcharisto poly (or however you would spell that).

Absolutely lovely

Our extended family of eight stayed for the Christmas holidays. We are finding it very hard to leave. The villa is spotlessly clean, comfortable, and provides ample privacy for everyone. Every bedroom has a bath and most have a kitchenette. Of course, there is room for family gatherings in the dining and living rooms and outside terraces. The owners are very generous. When we arrived, the villa was decorated for Christmas, the kitchen stocked with bread, cheese, fruit and wine, as well as delicious home made cake and cookies. The washing machine broke while we were here, and the owners had a brand new one installed the same day! We would definitely return.

Host profile image
I’m Dimitris, the heart behind Villa Kallergi - Athena, a dream nurtured by my family for over 25 years since we began this journey around 1999. Our story started with collaborations with travel agents before the internet transformed hospitality, leading us to pioneer platforms like Homeaway (later Vrbo and Abritel), TripAdvisor (since 2006), Airbnb (since 2010), and others. Hospitality is in our blood—my mother’s homemade jams and our warm welcome baskets filled with local delights reflect the care we pour into every stay. After decades of hands-on effort, I’m passionate about sharing our legacy while seeking ways to make this a more passive endeavor for my family. I invite you to experience the love and dedication we’ve built into this home, and I’m always delighted to hear your stories from your Cretan escape!

Why they chose this property

We chose Loutra, a serene medieval village in Rethymno Prefecture, for its timeless charm and breathtaking sea views that capture the soul of Crete. Villa Kallergi is our family heritage home and the Kallergi family has historic connections with the area and island of Crete. Nestled centrally on the island, it offers easy access to both coasts and cultural treasures, though the lack of a nearby airport adds a peaceful seclusion, perfect for those planning their summer getaway during the April-November season. This area’s rich history, with its winding streets and natural beauty, inspired us to create a retreat that blends tradition with comfort. The 400-year-old vine climbing our villa and the medieval courtyard entrance are testaments to Loutra’s allure, making it an ideal heaven for families and groups seeking an authentic Cretan experience away from the bustle.

What makes this property unique

Villa Kallergi - Athena stands apart with its 640 square meters of thoughtfully designed indoor and outdoor space, crafted for 12 guests across 6 private suites—most with kitchenettes, all with bathrooms, including a loft-style master suite spanning two floors.

- **Size and Capacity**: The villa is sleeping up to 12 guests, making it ideal for large groups, families, or events like weddings.
- **Location Perks**: Situated in the medieval village of Loutra, Crete, it offers sea views and proximity to beaches, enhancing its appeal for a scenic, cultural vacation.
- **Unique Appeal**: The villa is part of a historic complex (formerly five medieval houses), renovated in 2022 for a modern yet authentic Cretan experience. This blend of history and luxury is a significant value-add. In 2025, we’ve redefined luxury with a newly redesigned swimming pool area and a two-level roof terrace, offering a cozy lounge and sunbathing haven that transforms into an evening retreat with sunbeds as seating. A concert grand piano in the main lounge and a 400-year-old vine producing grapes in August-September add cultural depth, while Cocomat hypoallergenic beds ensure restful, allergy-free sleep. Our personal touches—welcome baskets with organic fruits, local spirits, homemade jams, and goodies for kids—combined with our 25-year legacy and 4.88-5/5 reviews, create a boutique escape unlike the mass-built villas, tailored for those who value history, comfort, and heart.
