We had a great stay. Loved the cottage, the location, and the area. Barbara was very communicative and gave us lots of great recommendations. We were there for 4 nights but could have happily stayed longer!
This was the perfect little house to stay in for our anniversary trip to Maine. Everything was stocked and clean and very thought out. Barbara was a great host and gave all the recommendations for the area. Will definitely be coming back!
Lovely place and location. Very clean and inviting, equipped with everything you need and no clutter. Soft towels & high quality bed linens as well. Perfect!
The cottage was very comfortable and had everything we needed to cook in and relax. We were well placed to explore the island. We had a change in plans and Barbara was more than accommodating in making the change and ensuring that we were reimbursed for the change. Highly recommend.
My wife and I only stayed one night since we had lots of stops on our journey up the coast of Maine. We both loved the property and views. It was clean and comfortable and we had a great time! It is marked on our list of places that we will stay longer on our next visit!
We loved our stay at this cottage. Barbara is a wonderful host who supplies you with a wealth of information about the area. It's a beautiful location with amazing views of Crockett cove. It was our first time to Deer Isle, the cottage is fantastic place to explore this incredible area. We look forward to coming back!

Thank you, Susan! We were so happy to be able to share our cottage with you and felt honored this was your introduction to Maine. Please come visit again!
My wife and I enjoyed our stay. Perfect for a couple. Quiet property. Nice scenery. Well stocked, if you need something it's probably there. Good communication with owner. Recommend.
Great setting. Very comfortable. Everything you need is provided. We loved our stay! Stonington proper is very quaint and picturesque. We hiked every day and ate lobster / seafood . Favorite evening was spent with Captain Charlie on Bugaboo for an island tour! Great guy Great tour!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Heron Cottage. The house is clean, cozy, and well-apportioned, with a gracious host. Barbara offered many tips of things to do in the area, and the bottle of wine and fresh flowers for us in the cottage were special touches.
Barbara was a wonderful host. The description of the property was accurate. Words can not capture the tranquility and comfort of Heron Cottage. A great location to explore the Isle au Haute and Stonington. The cottage was clean, and had everything needed for a comfortable stay. I highly recommend Heron Cottage. We hope to return.

Thank you so much, Gina. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay and we hope to welcome you back in the future!
We absolutely loved our stay. The cottage is an artfully light, relaxing, well thought out space. It overlooks a salt marsh and meadow. The birds and fireflies were amazing. Also loved Deer Isle. Great hikes, fresh lobster. Low key and allows you to really relax. Barbara and Wylie were the perfect hosts. Highly recommend.
This home is the perfect private resting place for a vacation - one could easily never leave the property enjoying the collection of books, games, well equipped kitchen and view of the lupins and water. It is only minutes away from Aragosta’s fine dining, magical hikes including the Barred Island Preserve sandbar and Stonington’s mail boat to Isla Haut. We would love to return!

Sweet cottage in a beautiful, serene location. Barbara, our host, left no detail undone. We were greeted by a personal note and special touches, beautiful vases of fresh wildflowers, a fun selection of reading materials and lots of great local suggestions.
We hope to return to the area again and would not hesitate to rent Barbara’s beautiful cottage.
The Serene Cottage on Crockett Cove was so lovely that we extended our stay. The cottage is charming and bright, and cozy even on cold nights. It's full of interesting artworks and great reading material. The kitchen was perfect for the times when we wanted to eat in. There are nice restaurants and gift stores and a wonderful used bookstore in the picturesque village of Stonington, just a few miles from the cottage. Our favorite hike was the Barred Island Preserve, just a short drive away.
We had a lovely mini-vacation visiting Deer Isle. The cozy cottage is perfect for a couple. The kitchen is well stocked, the bed comfortable, linens and bathroom very clean. There is a nice sized porch/deck for enjoying the view of the cove. Although it was rainy we enjoyed some hiking, and the location is good for accessing all Deer Isle has to offer. Barbara is an excellent host, easily reached and very helpful.Highly recommended!
Had an excellent stay on the cove at Barbara’s place. Check in was easy breezy, Barbara was easy to communicate with and extremely welcoming. It was evident right away how much love has gone into the cottage and how much effort she puts in to make for an excellent stay. We were greeted with a nice welcome note and fresh flowers on the table. It’s bright, beautifully decorated and warm. Kitchen is well stocked, lots of towels and blankets and a great little set of games. All in all, can’t imagine staying anywhere else. It’s a very special place.
Heron Cottage was the perfect place to both rest and tour while in Maine. Our visit in mid-October timed the Fall leaves perfectly - all visible from the cottage!
Barbara's excellent recommendations pointed us toward Barred Island Preserve and Isle au Haute via the Mail Boat. So cool! Additionally, we were able to make day trips to Acadia (90min), Belfast (~75min), Ellsworth (MoMos cheesecake) and more importantly around Deer Isle. On Deer Isle, we were lucky to find 44 North for our daily coffee and The Periwinkle for gifts and toys for our family back home - a true genuine Maine experience!!
Barbara, we want to sincerely thank you for bringing your cottage to VRBO as everything exceeded our expectations. We look forward to visiting again soon!

About the host
Hosted by Barbara Simmonds
I’ve been vacationing on Deer Isle for over 40 years and decided to make it our full-time home a few years ago. Now, my daughter and I get to enjoy so many of the same things I loved as a child— not much has changed!
We love exploring the rocky beaches, going on island picnics, visiting galleries, taste-testing at Nervous Nellie’s, riding the mail boat to Isle au Haut, and catching the end-of-session auctions at Haystack. And every year, there’s always something unexpected that pops up!
There's as much- or as little- to do in Maine as you want to.
Why they chose this property
There's nearby hiking in Crockett Woods or Barred Island Preserve, easy access to downtown Stonington and great kayaking and swimming just out the door.
What makes this property unique
I visited this property three summers ago on a rainy foggy day and knew instantly it was the place for us. The tide shapes your day- from when to take out a boat, swim or just explore in the mud. It's peaceful and private- you might see a few kayaks out on the cove at the height of summer, but many days you will have it entirely to yourself.
