About this property
Harbor View Cottage
Harbor View Cottage is an approximately 150 year old house at the foot of KnocNaTobar. This “mountain of a thousand springs” was sacred to the Irish for centuries. A pilgrimage route continues to the top today. When the weather is clear, you can see far into the country from there - from Skellig Michael to the Blasket Islands, from Dingle and Slea Head to almost Kenmare.
The cottage is located around 200 from the pier in Coonanna Harbor. The valley around the harbor is considered one of the most beautiful areas of West Kerry. Green hills and meadows with sheep, a small stream that flows into the bay, a free berth for boats right on the boat slip - a peaceful idyll, quiet and harmonious.
Around 150 years ago, the farmers cleared the mountain at a more sheltered location and probably built the first house in the valley: the farm cottage has walls made of natural stone, more than half a meter thick. The floor is tiled with the famous Valentia slate from the neighboring Valentia Island, as is Westminster Palace in London or the Opéra Garnier in Paris.
On the ground floor there is a cozy dining and living room with a beamed ceiling and a warm sofa corner. Next door is the kitchen - stove, refrigerator, toaster, dishwasher, washer-dryer, dryer, Nespresso machine and all modern amenities are available and yet you can see that the kitchen has been lovingly adapted to the design of the old house. The bathroom is also on the ground floor. The shower base consists of pebbles from the bay, combined with antique tiles and matt black fittings, which harmonize well with the slate of the opposite washbasin.
In the main part of the living room, which is open to the roof, there is a traditional fireplace. After instruction and some other parameters, you can enjoy the roaring warmth of the open fire. Via a wooden staircase handcrafted according to old models, the path leads to the upper floor, which offers a cozy atmosphere with real wood and oak parquet floors. The bedroom on the upper floor is connected to the living room via an open gallery - so you can see and feel the cozy warmth of the fireplace from here.
The highlight of the bedroom is a traditional bed (180x200cm). There is also another bed (120x210cm). The two large Velux windows open up a view of the orchard behind the house and a fantastic view of the entire valley.
All rooms have modern electrics and a new, ecologically efficient air-to-water heater with beautifully designed radiators.
The Harbor View Cottage, like the neighboring Sea View Cottage, was completely refurbished and carefully restored in 2017/2018. The design concept sensitively combines the living feeling of a traditional Irish cottage with modern style elements and high demands on technology and living comfort - regardless of whether you enjoy the idyllic magic of the valley of Coonanna Harbor for just a week or a month.
From Coonanna you drive about 5-8 minutes to the nearby middle center Cahersiveen. Three supermarkets, two pharmacies, two petrol stations and around 25 pubs and restaurants offer the convenience of a small town near the rural tranquility of your cottage.
